POPS$100 Laptop Production Begins From the page: "The innovative design of the XO machine has also drawn praise from the technical community. Using open source software, OLPC have developed a stripped-down operating system which fits comfortably on the machine's 1GB of memory. "We made a set of trade-offs which may not be an office worker's needs but are more than adequate for what kids need for learning, exploring and having fun," said Professor Bender."

POPSLiving With Different Generations, What We Can Learn?
I found this clip very interesting. We can see how things are so different for all generations. Baby Boomers (ages 43 - 61), Generation X kids (ages 28 - 42), and Millennial kids ( age <27) different opinions. Your have to read it...and see how we can learn a little beet more about Generations. "For Millenials, time is the commodity of value, not money. They "work to live" but their parents "live to work" and Millenials struggle with following in their footsteps. That is, they see the Boomers stress and long work hours and sincerely don't want it. For a Millenial, when their specific portion of work is done, It's time to have fun. Time is the currency of value, not money, and if they work hard it is so they can get time off. They value time off as Boomers valued money. They tend to spend many more years in "young adulthood", the twilight between high school single hood and working parenthood. Many of them wait until they are in their late 20' to get married.

POPSKeeping Track Of The Kids (Yours And Your Friends') This sounds like a case where you should do unto other parents as you would have them do unto you. You probably don't need -- or want -- to know about trivial mischief. But if there is dangerous behavior involved, I'm sure you'd want to know. Since you can't be sure whether they will want to know, I would take things one step at a time:Tell them what you have told me, and then ask them whether they want to know what you learned about their child. If they say no, then at least you have tried. If they say yes, then share your concern about how they will use the information. If they agree to keep the source confidential, go ahead and spill the beans.

POPSThe Girls 'Sexualised' At Age Of Five Researcher Dr Eileen Zurbriggen said that girls as young at four are at risk. "The consequences of the sexualisation of girls in media today are very real and are likely to be a negative influence on girls' healthy development," she said. "As a society, we need to replace all these sexualised images with ones showing girls in positive settings. "The goal should be to deliver messages to all adolescents - boy and girls - that lead to healthy sexual development." Michele Elliot, of child protection charity Kidscape, said: "Bratz dolls are little sexualised creatures which give the wrong message to kids. "Let them be kids. We have got children of 12, 13 and 14 who are ashamed that they haven't had sex yet. They think sex is the be all and end all." A spokesman for Bratz said that children see the dolls as being pretty rather than sexy.

POPSMAJORITY WOULD DIE BEFORE THE AGE OF FIVE It is difficult for a woman to know that she will have a sick child...I can't understand...They don't have enough help, then why having more babies?...Please, if I'm wrong, tell me because each time that I read this things makes me sad...The article says that mother to child transmission programmes have been slow to get off the ground in sub-Saharan Africa. Half a million babies are estimated to have been infected with HIV at birth or during breastfeeding last year alone. The Zimbabwe study suggests as many as one in four may survive into adolescence. One of the main public health messages, she said, was the need to prevent infection from mother to child during birth and breastfeeding The baby can be protected, but relatively few pregnant women with HIV are offered the chance to protect their baby.

POPSTeenagers Existence This goes in favor of our teens... The teenager is a uniquely human phenomenon. According to many recent studies, teen brains really are unique (see interactive graphic). Though many brain areas mature during childhood, others mature later - such as the frontal and parietal lobes, responsible for planning and self-control. Other studies have shown that teens fail to see the consequences of their actions, and that sudden increases in nerve connectivity in teen brains may make it difficult for teenagers to read social situations and other people's emotions.

POPSWelcome to the Fish Fry, Mom The authors of the British study concluded that they found "no evidence to lend support to the warnings of the U.S. advisory that pregnant women should limit their seafood consumption." The government's warning has had the effect of leading many women not to eat seafood at all. And that, it's now clear, looks like a big mistake. In the British study, mothers who ate no seafood were 48 percent more likely than the seafood chowhounds to have children with a low verbal IQ at age 8. Their children were also worse behaved and less sociable than the kids of fish-snarfing moms. There is more information about this...

POPSHelp Kids Stay Thin By Putting Them To Bed The study did not examine why children who slept less tended to weigh more, but Snell cited a few possible explanations. Not getting enough sleep may affect hormones that influence appetite, Snell said. Getting less sleep - for example, staying up an hour later at night - may provide more opportunity to eat, she added. And she said not getting enough sleep may leave a person more lethargic, cutting down on exercise. Snell said on weekdays, school schedules can dictate when children must wake up, but parents can control bedtime.
