POPSObama Gains Momentum - In Canada
The Canadian press has it right. Unlike the invested New York Times, they've written about the implications of the math - and not the emotion of narrow victories in states where big wins were anticipated. The Canadians have perceived last night for what it was - a colossal effort to gain ground which failed. What do Rhode Island, Arkansas, American Samoa and New York have in common? Those are the only states (going back to January) where Ms. Clinton has claimed more than 57% of the popular vote. Contrast that with her opponent who continues to rack up clear pluralities - while retaining solid numbers in big states. Ms. Clinton has suggested that the voters in Ohio should place her at the top of the ticket. Surely she jests. There are many ways to figure this thing out. Let's take an equally absurd proposition. Let's simply tally the votes for Ohio, Illinois and New York. Would that work for Ms. Clinton? Let's reduce the election to Home States and her precious Ohio.

POPSFormer NYPD Police Officer Injects Clemens with Steroids
It will be quite some time before ESPN admits that a former police officer asserted that he personally injected Roger Clemens in the butt with steroids. Safe yourself some time. Download the PDF, use the search function and see for yourself. From the Mitchell Report: Toward the end of the road trip which included the Marlins series, or shortly after the Blue Jays returned home to Toronto, Clemens approached McNamee and, for the first time, brought up the subject of using steroids. Clemens said that he was not able to inject himself, and he asked for McNamee’s help. Later that summer, Clemens asked McNamee to inject him with Winstrol, which Clemens supplied. McNamee knew the substance was Winstrol because the vials Clemens gave him were so labeled. McNamee injected Clemens approximately four times in the buttocks over a several-week period with needles that Clemens provided. Each incident took place in Clemens’s apartment at the SkyDome. McNamee never asked Clemens where he o

POPSVick's World Goes to Dogs Children and families in Texas could be doing better than they are today. While there are no quick-permanent fixes for curing all that ails American families, more physical space to support the healthy development of children cannot hurt. In some Texas counties, there seems to be more room for animals than the unwanted spawn of that states undesirables and unlucky. Texans are not alone in this. No one ever said a child, especially someone else's teenage child, was man's best friend.

POPSNo Time to Hate the Patriots As a Steeler fan, I am predisposed to have nothing but visceral contempt for the New England Patriots. After two devastating home losses in the AFC Championship Game, Steeler fans often feel like the franchise could have 7 championships by now. That was then, this is now. This edition of the New England Patriots is absolutely unbelievable. While it is certain that any team can lose on any given Sunday, this is probably the most dominant team I've ever seen - and that includes the Dynasty Era Steelers, the Joe Montana-led San Francisco 49ers and the 1985 Chicago Bears. The Patriots have elite personnel on both sides of the ball and a singular focus that has that at the edge of history. This is no time to hate the Patriots. Watch every minute because you may not see this again. (Yes, it does hurt to write that.)

POPSPlanting Seeds for Education Equityppp A group of social justice attorneys are doing some serious work down in Washington, D.C. In addition to providing an advocacy front on key issues, Appleseed attorneys and their collaborators (this time, Columbia University) have been developing position papers and reports on some critical issues in education. I had the pleasure this week of meeting Appleseed's Education Director Edwin Darden. Appleseed presently operates 6 centers nationwide dedicated to the implementation of these report recommendations. Please take a moment to go to their site or download the PDF here.

POPSDobb and Weave I've known Lou Dobbs was a dope for years and ceased to watch his show for precisely that reason. With that said, I'm glad someone was watching.

POPSTom Lantos: Degrees of Outrage Tom Lantos (D. - California) is the Chair of the House Committee of Foreign Affairs. While reading ESPN's website, I came across an article in which Lantos called for some action to be taken by the league against Michael Vick (see the quote from Lantos' press release below). This is not a defense of Michael Vick or dog fighting, but of the principle of innocence before proven guilty. To my knowledge, the "jury is not in" with respect to Vick's role. And perhaps more importantly, I am concerned about this heretofore unknown Congressman ratcheting up his outrage for Michael Vick while striking a much more conciliatory tone with Warren Buffett. If I didn't know any better, I'd think Tom Lantos was full of shit. Actually, I don't know any better.

POPSThe Cost of Flying Prices for unrefined materials continue to contribute to African underdevelopment. According to the BBC, bauxite fetches a mere $20/ton while refined alumina brings in $400/ton. Guinea has the keys to its own economic emancipation right beneath its feet. The will to wealth and economic empowerment is fundamental to the future of the country. If the Guinean government cannot attract higher prices and create the apparatus for refined alumina, they cannot govern the nation. There is enough demand from the Middle East and China to address this calamity. Passing up $380 for every ton of natural resources is as criminal an activity as leading a colonial regime. Today's leaders are no less culpable than the French for the pervasive poverty afflicting this nation.
