China says U.S. must do more on climate change
TheCatWhisperer
by TheCatWhisperer  12-20-2007    3
I agree. The US (and canada, much of Eurpe, etc) are responmsible for the majority of the pollution that is the central cause of climate change. Hence, tehy should take the lead in helping to combat the issue. Asking developing nations to step up to this degree is absurd. How are they supposed to bring themselves into the 1st world if they have to pay soo much more to bring thier economies up to scale? The US already has ample power generation and manufacturing to meet its needs, China, india and others ont he toerhhand still need to grow substatially in order to com eeven close to par with us. So maybe we shouldbe helping to foot thier bill, knowing that by doing so we are helping the world overall. We should also take the lead and lead by example. The money we put into research in development is a great way to make it cheaper and more affordable for devloping nations.

Microsoft could save 45 million tons of CO2 emissions with a few lines of computer code
TheCatWhisperer
by TheCatWhisperer  11-16-2006
Hrm, considering the source of the idea, the fact MS would be forcing hundreds of millions of users to follow it's own "green initiative", the effect on user's computers and possible programs running 24x7 (like media center's recording capabilities) something tells me this will be a no-go (btw: not sure MS even knows of this idea...) Nice pipe-dream.

How to Talk to a Global Warming Skeptic (FAQ)
Kore7
by Kore7  11-12-2006    27
More common questions and myths answered at the source, thoroughly cross-referenced and conveniently categorized and sub-categorized by type of argument: Stages of Denial Scientific Topics Types of Argument Levels of Sophistication A nice reference that's updated with fresh comments. Many "skeptics" often are unaware (by choice or by circumstance) that their common questions have already been addressed by scientists long ago.

Concrete that literally eats pollution.
TheCatWhisperer
by TheCatWhisperer  11-10-2006    6
If it works, then this could be a big breakthrough indeed. However, it's not like cities are going to start re-paving roads that don't need it, or demoing & rebuilding building, (or even just repainting them with this solution)... The cost would be prohibitive. So that 50% savings (just off of 15% of concrete surfaces) is a LONG way away. Plus, this definitely doesn't curb the need for changing the way we pollute...

Britain Warns of High Costs of Global Warming
TheCatWhisperer
by TheCatWhisperer  10-31-2006
There was an article in today's Chronicle Herald (local paper) which points out an amusing fact.. (well, to me) That while most of the world will suffer from greater floods or droughts, economic losses from increased storm activity, lowered yields due to desertification, Canada will see increased agricultural yields and shorter winters.

Scientists, American public disagree sharply over global warming
TheCatWhisperer
by TheCatWhisperer  10-31-2006    25
I find it absolutely appalling that only 41 percent of American's believe global warming is not an environmental fluctuation... The evident from science is overwhelming.. the vast majority of scientists have been screaming about this for a long time, yet the American public seems to know better? What? All of these scientists are liberal nut-jobs?? *blank stare*

Power Execs: Carbon Emission Caps
TheCatWhisperer
by TheCatWhisperer  10-23-2006
Interesting article... Kidof shows how some in teh power industry are at least trying to think of how thye can help save us all from doom ;) One quote i find apauling in the article however (from one who is agaisnt teh emission caps): " "The issue is global warming, not U.S. warming," said Mike Morris, the chief executive of American Electric Power of Columbus, Ohio, the largest coal-burning utility in the country. Unless China, India and other developing nations also are forced to adopt costly alternatives to traditional fossil fuels, U.S. manufacturers -- a major customer for AEP -- will be at an unfair competitive disadvantage, Morris said. " Boo hoo... YOu know at some point the big guy on the block has to stand up and do the right thing and hope others follow suite.

Turning Up Heat on Global Warming
TheCatWhisperer
by TheCatWhisperer  9-28-2006    1
It will be interesting to see how this all plays out... It indeed could lead business to California who will focus on Clean technologies, hoping to jump on the bandwagon (and leading to new investments & jobs)... or.. it could cause a lot of factory jobs to go the way of the dinosaur. The big issue I see is that many of those factory jobs that will likely be lost if the business can't find an economical way to reduce emissions do not even indirectly transfer into the high tech jobs that the new cleaner companies mentioned on the first option I talked about. What happens to those workers? Will Arnie also sponsor state subsidized upgrading of skills?
