Venezuela's rouged revolution

Kind-of extreme... especially the part about the girls asking (and some getting) breast augmentation as young as 13... (also liposuction, etc..) In the paper edition, there was a picture showing Ornela Maria. When I first glanced at the page, I thought she was probably about 16-18... Then I saw 10... There's something wrong when a 10 year old dresses like she's 18... makeup and all... Kids are getting too old too young.. and I'm a liberal.. about as liberal as they come (unless I'm talking about crime & punishment)... but this is wrong.. this kid should be out playing with dolls... But you see this a lot now, young girls, as young as 7 or 8, dressing in clothes that a dozen years ago would likely have gotten the parents a visit from the Children's Aid Society... What the hell is going on???

Britain Warns of High Costs of Global Warming

There was an article in today's Chronicle Herald (local paper) which points out an amusing fact.. (well, to me) That while most of the world will suffer from greater floods or droughts, economic losses from increased storm activity, lowered yields due to desertification, Canada will see increased agricultural yields and shorter winters.

US fell again in the annual Reporters Without Borders Worldwide Press Freedom Index.

The land of the free, who's first amendment is free speech fell to 53rd place... (from 44th, last years score was 9.5, this year it is 13) You guys should get on that... Canada "rose" to 16th from 21st, but in reality our score stayed the same at 4.5. Info on how the list was compiled is here . The questionnaire that the "independent sources" used is here note the last paragraph: " The index should in no way be taken as an indication of the quality of the press in the countries concerned. " Though I think there may be some biased "independent sources", I think the list is useful... You often hear of the press either being coerced or "threatened", being censored, etc in the US (yes, it happens in Canada too, to a lesser degree). As leaders of the free world, western nations should be at the top of this list.. not at 16th (Canada) & 53rd (United Sta

NYT: The Long Zoom (or: how Will Wright could change the world)
TheCatWhisperer
by TheCatWhisperer  10-11-2006
The article is more or less about Will Wright's new game "Spore". For those of you not "in the know" this game diverges from the rest... there e is very little violence, and the small amount in it is cartoonish, and not glorified. The games' concept starts at the cellular level, allows you to build a create from a single celled organism, then a tribe, society, civilization, planet, galaxy, universe, all the while learning about diversity, and cause-effect actions. Making your creature a predator (literally, as in the Arnie sense), while allowing your creature to better survive in the wild or as a tribe can have harsh consequences when you meet other civilizations. Likewise, making them an herbivore can make it hard dot survive predators at all... Read the article.. It's quite interesting.. it just irks me that the damned game won't be out till mid-late next year at the soonest!!

Remember the forgotten hero who saved the world

Apparently this kind of thing has happened more than once. What scares me is that the technology that "monitored" nuclear weapon launches and actually controlled launchers could easily fit in a button today... I still remember that rumor that the default code for the missle silos was "00000" (so as to be easily entered when needed)... I think it was indeed a rumor, but I'm too scared to find out ;)

Morality Is Not On Israel's Side
jklugman
by jklugman  8-2-2006    7
On July 28, 1989, we kidnapped Sheikh Obeid, and on May 12, 1994, we kidnapped Mustafa Dirani, who had captured Ron Arad. Israel held these two people and another 20-odd Lebanese detainees without trial, as "negotiating chips." That which is permissible to us is, of course, forbidden to Hezbollah.
