POPSChina says U.S. must do more on climate change I agree. The US (and canada, much of Eurpe, etc) are responmsible for the majority of the pollution that is the central cause of climate change. Hence, tehy should take the lead in helping to combat the issue. Asking developing nations to step up to this degree is absurd. How are they supposed to bring themselves into the 1st world if they have to pay soo much more to bring thier economies up to scale? The US already has ample power generation and manufacturing to meet its needs, China, india and others ont he toerhhand still need to grow substatially in order to com eeven close to par with us. So maybe we shouldbe helping to foot thier bill, knowing that by doing so we are helping the world overall. We should also take the lead and lead by example. The money we put into research in development is a great way to make it cheaper and more affordable for devloping nations.

POPSGore and UN Panel win peace prize Good for him and the IPCC. Its getting hard for the deniers to get any leverage when every sane person out there has come to terms with the "Inconvenient Truth" that is climate change.

POPSClimate change: A guide for the perplexed From New Scientist. There is also a guide to assessing the evidence. In the articles we've included lots of links to primary research and major reports for those who want to follow through to the original sources.

POPSNASA finds evidence of widespread Antarctic melting "Antarctica has shown little to no warming in the recent past, with the exception of the Antarctic Peninsula, but now large regions are showing the first signs of the impacts of warming as interpreted by this satellite analysis," said Steffen in a statement. "Increases in snowmelt, such as this in 2005, definitely could have an impact on larger-scale melting of Antarctica's ice sheets if they were severe or sustained over time."

POPSZoning Rules Thwart Gore's Solar Dreams
Eat that gore haters... He has been trying since he bought the damn place to make it carbon neutral (or as close as he can get, while still making the home comfortable, etc) since he bought it. The best quote: Terry Franklin, Belle Meade's building officer, said the town only allows power generating equipment to be placed on the ground level. "Solar panels are generators," Franklin said. Not all energy generators are alike.. Solar power panels produce little to no sound. Later in the article they mention that the new bylaw allows that "Solar panels may be installed upon the roof of a building so long as they are not visible from the street or from any adjoining property" . These people need to get over themselves.. solar panels aren't going to make the neighborhood into a slum... they've even developed solar panels that look like and are attached as roof shingles... with this new bylaw, they've effectively made those illegal if they can be seen. POPSMars Melt Hints at Solar, Not Human, Cause for Warming, Scientist Says "His views are completely at odds with the mainstream scientific opinion," said Colin Wilson, a planetary physicist at England's Oxford University. "And they contradict the extensive evidence presented in the most recent IPCC report." Amato Evan, a climate scientist at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, added that "the idea just isn't supported by the theory or by the observations." Perhaps the biggest stumbling block in Abdussamatov's theory is his dismissal of the greenhouse effect, in which atmospheric gases such as carbon dioxide help keep heat trapped near the planet's surface. He claims that carbon dioxide has only a small influence on Earth's climate and virtually no influence on Mars. But "without the greenhouse effect there would be very little, if any, life on Earth, since our planet would pretty much be a big ball of ice," said Evan, of the University of Wisconsin.

POPSChina Will Be #1 in Greenhouse Emissions by 2008 No, this doesn't mean that since china is going to pollute a lot, then we should not bother doing anything.. quite the opposite.. we should work with china to help them come up with strategies to reduce their footprint. The main issue seems to be in infrastructure and that their populous is coming into the "new" age at a rapid pace. China, seems to be at least attempting to do something about it. In many provinces, their emissions standards for new cars are much more stringent than any in north America, and on par with many places in Europe (sorry, am going off what i saw on a documentary ... I'll try and find web links later)... Alas, they are undergoing massive reforestation & reclamation of desert lands .. trying to replace the damage they have done in many places by over farming.. Alas, in other provinces, things aren't so "green".

POPSKeith Olbermann debunks right-wing's Al Gore smears I'm sure n2 will come up with some idiotic scenario about how this is some conspiracy from the left... Even when many different sources have come out to show that the partisan group (Tennessee blah blah) skew the facts and outright lied about a few things....

POPSHow to Talk to a Global Warming Skeptic (FAQ) More common questions and myths answered at the source, thoroughly cross-referenced and conveniently categorized and sub-categorized by type of argument: Stages of Denial Scientific Topics Types of Argument Levels of Sophistication A nice reference that's updated with fresh comments. Many "skeptics" often are unaware (by choice or by circumstance) that their common questions have already been addressed by scientists long ago.

POPSConcrete that literally eats pollution. If it works, then this could be a big breakthrough indeed. However, it's not like cities are going to start re-paving roads that don't need it, or demoing & rebuilding building, (or even just repainting them with this solution)... The cost would be prohibitive. So that 50% savings (just off of 15% of concrete surfaces) is a LONG way away. Plus, this definitely doesn't curb the need for changing the way we pollute...

POPSScientists: Bush Muzzled Research No surprise here... I remember a few stories last year about scientists from NASA and other administrations complaining that their papers were being censored.

POPSBritain Warns of High Costs of Global Warming There was an article in today's Chronicle Herald (local paper) which points out an amusing fact.. (well, to me) That while most of the world will suffer from greater floods or droughts, economic losses from increased storm activity, lowered yields due to desertification, Canada will see increased agricultural yields and shorter winters.

POPSScientists, American public disagree sharply over global warming I find it absolutely appalling that only 41 percent of American's believe global warming is not an environmental fluctuation... The evident from science is overwhelming.. the vast majority of scientists have been screaming about this for a long time, yet the American public seems to know better? What? All of these scientists are liberal nut-jobs?? *blank stare*

POPSPower Execs: Carbon Emission Caps Interesting article... Kidof shows how some in teh power industry are at least trying to think of how thye can help save us all from doom ;) One quote i find apauling in the article however (from one who is agaisnt teh emission caps): " "The issue is global warming, not U.S. warming," said Mike Morris, the chief executive of American Electric Power of Columbus, Ohio, the largest coal-burning utility in the country. Unless China, India and other developing nations also are forced to adopt costly alternatives to traditional fossil fuels, U.S. manufacturers -- a major customer for AEP -- will be at an unfair competitive disadvantage, Morris said. " Boo hoo... YOu know at some point the big guy on the block has to stand up and do the right thing and hope others follow suite.

POPSTurning Up Heat on Global Warming It will be interesting to see how this all plays out... It indeed could lead business to California who will focus on Clean technologies, hoping to jump on the bandwagon (and leading to new investments & jobs)... or.. it could cause a lot of factory jobs to go the way of the dinosaur. The big issue I see is that many of those factory jobs that will likely be lost if the business can't find an economical way to reduce emissions do not even indirectly transfer into the high tech jobs that the new cleaner companies mentioned on the first option I talked about. What happens to those workers? Will Arnie also sponsor state subsidized upgrading of skills?
