<<<Another belief he shares with Sufism is the idea that God, humanity and the natural world are all linked, and might even be part of a single entity, a sort of cosmic trinity. This idea has practical consequences. For example, it suggests that a believer will love and respect humanity and the natural world as they would God. It also means that no one should be seen as an outsider.>>> Who today represents a Christian counterpart?

10 Most Beautiful Bridges in the World
    Aribeth
    by Aribeth  3-8-2008    7
     >>We’ve come a long way in bridge building since crossing a river on a fallen log. The first bridges were built with wooden planks, ropes and stones. Soon, stronger material were required. Wood and stone bridges gave way to iron, then to steel ones. Bridge building techniques also evolved: beam, cantilevered, cable-stayed, and suspension bridges - each with advantages that made it the right choice for a particular location. Political fortunes and wars have been made or lost by bridges. Throughout history, bridges had been built by engineers and burned by warriors, and crossed by kings and commoners alike. Millions of people owe their livelihood to bridges, as most require them to commute; and yet thousands of people choose to end their lives by jumping off them every year.<<

    Tehran Calls Iranian Kurds "Terrorists"
    merrie
    by merrie  12-14-2007    1
In an exclusive interview with Newsmax recently in Berlin, Ahmadi says that Iran was now working hand-in-glove with Turkey to get PJAK labeled as a terrorist organization. “Iran knows they can’t make trouble for us directly because they have such bad relations with Europe. That’s why they are going through Turkey.” The Iranian regime has been telling journalists and diplomats that PJAK and the PKK (the Kurdistan Workers Party) are the same. “But we are an Iranian party, and have nothing to do with Turkey,” he says. PJAK has become a serious threat to the regime in Tehran because it is fighting to overthrow the clerical regime in favor of a secular republic and because it favors equality between men and women, Ahmadi asserts. The group has around 2,500 armed guerilla fighters, 40 percent of whom are women.

These two from opposite sides have come together to lay out the way forward if we want success in Iraq and the war on terror.

Still a Democracy. 'How about you?'
    righthand
    by righthand  11-22-2007    5
The voters will decide, with a far stronger opposition media than exists in the USA proselytising against the government. Venezuelans have not lost civil liberties the way people in the US or the UK have in recent years, and ordinary citizens continue to have more say in their government, and share more in its oil wealth, than ever before. It is doubtful that the referendum will reverse these changes, regardless of the outcome. He does seem to be trying to give the poor some healthcare and some hope. 'How about you?'

    Concentrating on Iran's nuclear plant
    Rasmus
    by Rasmus  11-21-2007    2
By signing the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, opened for signature in 1968, 189 states committed themselves to non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, disarmament (!!!!!!!!!!!!!), and peaceful use of nuclear energy. There are contractual partners (e.g. the U.S.) that don't fulfill their commitments. Instead of contractually disarming their nuclear weapons, they develop new ones, modernize their arsenals, their launcher systems, missiles, airforce, and submarine boats, and thus they arouse greediness of other states. Why should we be active against Iran, not exactly knowing whether and to what extent it infringed the Non-Proliferation Treaty, while we keep mum about contractual partners who are defaulting. Question mark. Rasmus
