POPSColors From Outer Space "Capturing color in outer space with the Hubble Telescope is not as simple as with a normal camera using color film. The Hubble’s camera records light from the universe using “electronic detectors” which capture two or more separate black and white photos. The resulting colors are not always what the human eye would see in space, but nonetheless, the images created by Hubble and the NASA team are imaginative and stunning." A lot more text at the source....very interesting article!

POPSTracking the Origin of the Cat Cats probably started living close to humans when people evolved from nomadic herding to raising livestock and crops and started storing food, which attracted mice and other rodents. Cats found good hunting there, and humans surely appreciated the sly little predators' help protecting their stocks."There was a mutual benefit," Lyons said. From there, domesticated cats started to radiate out to different parts of the world, often following humans on their migrations. Today cats can be divided genetically into four broad groups: those from Europe, the Mediterranean, East Africa and Asia. But Lyons and her colleagues also made surprising discoveries about individual breeds. The Japanese bobtail, for example, does not seem genetically similar to cats from Japan, indicating the breed may have originated elsewhere. Despite its name, the Persian, the oldest recognized breed, looks as though it actually arose in Western Europe and not Persia, which today is Iran.

POPSCat Flight A Possibility? A study at Bristol’s rest of England University has taken the possibility of cat flying from the realms of Galileo’s used tissue to a real possibility and the clearly excited research team at URE have been running up and down the corridors, stamping, shouting and pointing up at the clear blue sky. “It’s a real breakthrough.” said professor Glynn Martin who has been leading the team since May 2007. Professor Martin went on to show slides(see diagram above) demonstrating velocity, arc, wind speed and the now much talked about ‘rolling patterns’ which appear to be part of the new science which has helped this project leap so gracefully forward. It seems that if a feline subject is ‘rolled’ soon after launching it can achieve a trajectory far in excess of that previously obtained when no rolling has been used.

POPSMy Gay Cat, Kingston I am the proud mother of a gay cat. His name is Kingston. I learned a lot about homosexuality in the feline community when Kingston began discovering a large part of himself. I see that picture of him and my heart swells with love. I do not see *my gay cat, Kingston.* I see *Kingston.* His sexuality is his own business. His personality is perfect. He has a high -pitched meow, like a new kittens yelp. He rolls over on his back for copious belly rubs and he has never EVER thrown his claws out even in defense. If someone is rough with him or he gets upset he just runs away, unlike his mother, Naji would just as soon strike if you looked at her cross-eyed. :) My point is that my Kingston...is beautiful and perfect.

POPSThe Healing Power of Dogs Integrative Cancer Therapies reported how ordinary house dogs could identify breast and lung cancer patients by smelling their breath. A University of Maine study is testing whether dogs can sniff out ovarian cancer.. Via the breath too, I hope! *LOL* Dogs rock, cats rule. Get a pet. It's good for you. :)

POPSThis cat is out cold (photo) I had a himalayan cat we called sasquatch, sometimes squatchy, that used to sleep like this; he'd wake up for a second with his eyes open, not moving, then fall back asleep. Goofy little guy.

POPSThe Cat Diary Today's story is about "blogging". Go the site and read the rest. The Big Owner used to have another cat, Chance, but he died (*sniff*) and now he reads from his new cat Mars' diary. They're just silly little stories about life and the world, as seen through the eyes of a cat, but they brighten my day. Kind of like Garfield. Anyway... enjoy. :) http://www.catdiary.com

POPSDog saves master with heimlich maneuver It was given the dog of the year award at the dog and cat of the year awards given by the ASPCA. A cat was awarded a prize for waking someone up in a fire and there were awards given to people, but I'm sure not even many people would have the sense to do the Heimlich maneuver, and cats aren't heavy enough. Both of the award winners were saved after being left abandoned as a puppy and a kitten.

POPSAlone In Life, Alone In Death "She would tell me, 'Buddy, I don't know what I would do without you.' Or she'd say, 'Sit down, Buddy, and stay awhile.' Aww, such a sad story. I think I read somewhere that in the western world, one in three people lives alone. That leaves a lot of room for loneliness or isolation. I'm not a big people-person myself. (Who would have thunk it? *LOL*) Anyway, some people prefer solitude and like it that way. Some suffer tremendously. How will you know, if you don't reach out? Don't let this happen to your neighbour (or their cats!). Rest in peace Mrs Ballard. (Would somebody nearby; neighbours, police, rspca, please get those cats picked up! What is wrong with people!? Isn't one sad death enough? Geeez. )

POPSHoyden Hints for the Suddenly Single Here's a bit more (and this is one of my favorites, from personal experience): "Do things for other people. I firmly believe that you are the most yourself when you are thinking the least about yourself and last thing you want to be thinking about now is you. It doesn't have to be an official volunteer gig but those do get something else on your calendar." I find that tips like these also help combat depression. Check out this girl's other blog posts. Not only does she have empathy and a sense of humor, she also loves cats and books. :-)
