About me
Now you understand
Just why my head's not bowed.
I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It's in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need of my care,
'Cause I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Excerpt from Phenomenal Woman by Maya Angelou
Why I use Clipmarks
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

Excerpt from I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud by William Wordsworth

Dangers of Bactrim, Septrin, Septra

Sebastian Amyes, professor of medical microbiology at Edinburgh University, condemned the general use of Septrin and Bactrim. "One has to examine the moral argument, the ethical argument, of administering a drug known to provoke serious side-effects - some leading to death - when it doesn't have an active role," he said.

Go to first link in clip for an excellent article on the history of making Zubbles. Go to the second link to order Zubbles. The Zubbles are "wetter" than a normal bubble, but the color really does disappear. Get some on your hands, rub together and the color disappears. We tested it on a white t-shirt. Disappears after a few seconds or so. Amazing. The bubbles have good integrity too, they didn't burst when landing on the grass.

When we were at the museum visiting Body Worlds 2, volunteers were making plaster molds of dinosaur teeth and other interesting things. We picked up a cast of Lucy's footprint. My daughter is taking it for show and tell today. In preparation I looked up some facts on Lucy. I had no idea she was so tiny. She is shorter than my 5-year-old! Her footprint is so twee.

Origins of the metric system
bignosemousie
by bignosemousie  9-18-2007    2
A strong movement toward the use of the metric system in the U.S. during the 1970-1980 period lost momentum. Currently the U.S. is using dual measurements, where there is mixed use of the metric and inch-pound systems. A number of large industries and some smaller ones have converted to SI use. But, mainly due to lack of a mandate from U.S. voters, Congress has not pushed for a law making the metric system the sole measurement system in the U.S. However, as metric is the sole measurement language of most of the world, foreign customers buying U.S. products are gradually requiring that they be delivered labeled and produced in metric units; therefore, eventually, the chances are that the U.S. will become a metric nation. The map in the clip is from 1971.

Monsanto sues small farmers again (and again)
bignosemousie
by bignosemousie  5-6-2007    5
Monsanto is suing a canola farmer because bees pollinated his crops with "trademarked" pollen from a GM farm. Nice way to do business. Soon all canola crops will be owned by Monsanto, if it doesn't kill the bees first. Monsanto also sued a dairy farmer to prevent him from labelling his milk rBGH-free. Monsanto is the number one producer of rBGH.

Languages are being murdered faster than ever before. What does this mean? The article ties linguistic diversity (LD) to biodiversity (BD). The two diversities seem to enforce and support each other. When the language dies, the knowledge dies with it. Interesting article for anthropologists and linguists.
