About me
I retired from my professional career in 1990. I was a lab technician when I earned my bachelors degree and entered industry as a research chemist. My major projects were the measurement of thermodynamic properties of rare compounds of interest to electric discharge lamp (street light) technology and the automation of gas chromatographic techniques for the characterization of coal-derived synthetic fuels.
Although successful by many standards, I was still missing the vital essence of the meaning of my life. I gave up my material possessions to embark on a journey to see America and find myself.
I explored National Parks and small towns. I labored alongside migrant farm workers. I was a carnival ride foreman for one season. I camped in the desert one winter. I rode freight trains. I became homeless.
Upon arriving in Oregon I realized that my travels had brought me home. Accustomed now to simple out-door living, I found pleasure in writing about my time and life. Over the years I have integrated myself into my community. Virtually independent financially, I am free to devote my time to my artistic endeavors; writing rhymes, illustrating them with colored drawings, and exploring the world via the internet from the comfort of my home.

Why I use Clipmarks
I am insatiably curious. I love art. And from years of frugal living I can recognize a great bargain.

Da Vinci's Model Car
cavey1732
by cavey1732  7-17-2008
Although most historians agree the birth of the modern car came about in the late 19th century when two Germans, Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz, designed real, working internal combustion engines, experiments with moving vehicles weren't uncommon beforehand. As far back as 1770, a Frenchman named Nicolas Cugnot developed a steam-powered machine, the Fardier, which could crawl through the streets of Paris at about two miles per hour. It was more than 500 years ago, however -- sometime around the year 1478 to be more or less specific -- when Leonardo drew out his plans for the world's first self-propelled vehicle. A working model of Leonardo Da Vinci's car on display at the Museum of the History of Science in Florence, Italy.

Poor Little Pluto
cavey1732
by cavey1732  7-8-2008
Pluto is mostly brown. This picture captures the true colors of Pluto as well as the highest surface resolution so far recovered. No spacecraft has yet visited this most distant dwarf planet in our Solar System. The above map was created by tracking brightness changes from Earth of Pluto during times when it was being partially eclipsed by its moon Charon. The map therefore shows the hemisphere of Pluto that faces Charon. Pluto's brown color is thought dominated by frozen methane deposits metamorphosed by faint but energetic sunlight. The dark band below Pluto's equator is seen to have rather complex coloring, however, indicating that some unknown mechanisms may have affected Pluto's surface.

Summer on Mars
cavey1732
by cavey1732  6-29-2008
This image was acquired by NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander's Surface Stereo Imager (SSI) in the late afternoon of the 30th Martian day of the mission, or Sol 30 (June 25, 2008). This is hours after the beginning of Martian northern summer. SSI used its natural-color filters, therefore the color is the color you would see on Mars. The image shows shadows from the SSI (left) and from the meteorological station mast (right) stretching toward the east as the sun dropped low in the west.
