POPSWhere Is Atheism When Bad Things Happen? Hmm....I had noticed this but never really gave it much thought. Good points. Funny that the protests against religious expression never occur until a couple weeks or so after a tragedy like this. More than that you never see an atheist offering a shoulder to those who are suffering. These folk scatter faster at the outset of tragedy, when man's natural inclination is to turn to God, than do roaches at a the turning of a light switch. Suppose they are seeking similar dark corners?

POPSBritish Library in London ONLINE! "Not everyone has the ability to journey over to the British Library in London, but anyone with a good Internet connection can journey through the pages of this august institution's most prized volumes. The Turning the Page site brings together digitized version of over a dozen sumptuous tomes for the web-browsing public and curious scholars. Visitors can page through the first atlas of Europe (compiled by none other than Mercator), view William Blake's famed notebook, and take in the genius of Mozart's Thematic Catalogue, complete with musical examples. Additionally, visitors have the ability to take a look through newly added materials, such as a 15th century Lisbon Hebrew Bible and an Ethiopian bible from 1700. "

POPSBritain Pulls Plug on Al Gore Interesting. I would not have guessed that this impact would have been so great. I would have assumed that total household consumption -- and this would have only involved the portion of households watching the concert -- was outsized by consumption of other users. Are our grids that fragile?

POPSTrent Reznor: I Steal Music Too Reznor, never one to refrain from speaking his mind, ends up confronting one of the record label "sales guys" at a meet and greet during his stay in Brisbane. He asks them why his CDs and DVDs cost 6,7, and even 8 more dollars then everybody elses. The sales guy says it's "Because your packaging is a lot more expensive." But, apparently Reznor pays for this out of his cut form the CD, so this is a moot argument. "I know how much the packaging costs -- it costs me, not them, it costs me 83 cents more to have a CD with the colour-changing ink on it. I'm taking the hit on that, not them." And I just said "That's the most insulting thing I've heard. I've garnered a core audience that you feel it's OK to rip off? F--- you'. That's also why you don't see any label people here, 'cos I said 'F--- you people. Stay out of my f---ing show. If you wanna come, pay the ticket like anyone else. F--- you guys". They're thieves.

POPSBigfoot Risks Extinction, Says Canadian MP So, I'm reading this article, laughing, and thinking to myself, "As many Cynthia McKinneys as we've had in the US Congress over the years, at least none have ever been this looney." Then, of course, the article continues: "A similar appeal has been made to the US Congress." IQ tests to qualify for voting may not be as bad of an idea as I had previously thought.

POPSA Fair(y) Use Tale " In the fun category, Professor Eric Faden of Bucknell University has created a video review of copyright principles. You're probably thinking, "How could anyone make a video about a legal concept even mildly entertaining?" But Faden's truly inspired video works on many levels because it consists entirely of extremely short clips (often no more than one word) from a wide variety of animated Disney movies. It's thanks in large part to Disney that copyright - which was designed to encourage creativity by giving the creator control over copying for a limited time - now lasts for the life of the creator plus 75 years, or, for a work of corporate authorship, 95 years. But thanks to the short length of the clips, its non-profit educational nature, and the fact that it would in no way affect the potential market for the copyrighted works, Faden's video undoubtedly falls under fair use."

POPSWe Can't Fire the President Right Now, So We're Waiting It Out. As a lifelong Red Sox fan the joy of 2004 was made even sweeter by the pain of disappointment I still harbored from 1986. Politically, I look forward to a similar day when I can enter a voting booth with enthusiasm. My first opportunity to vote in 1988 was as much a disappointment as a thrill. I had missed by four years the sole man who was worthy of that vote. In that election, and in every election since, I have held my nose entering the polls -- always voting for the lessor of two evils. I trust that the day I venture to vote without such regrets and put my disappointments since 1988 behind me will be just as sweet as the end of my drought in 2004.

POPSMicroft Says Open Source Is Illegal! MS can have OpenOffice and Firefox when they pry them from my cold, dead fingers. I hate MS almost as much as I do the Yankees. And that's a lotta hate considering I'm a Sox fan.
