    Obama Hype?
    cniq_cniq
    by cniq_cniq  7-17-2007
I have no reason to challenge the grass roots support that Obama claims. Still, this would seem to suggest that there is a certain amount of hype in the "record" pace. I also see a big loophole here in all the campaign finance reform alarmism of recent years. Could I buy 10,000 Brownback for president t-shirts after already maximizing my legal donations for the cycle? Seems to demonstrate the silliness of such laws.

As a lifelong Red Sox fan the joy of 2004 was made even sweeter by the pain of disappointment I still harbored from 1986. Politically, I look forward to a similar day when I can enter a voting booth with enthusiasm. My first opportunity to vote in 1988 was as much a disappointment as a thrill. I had missed by four years the sole man who was worthy of that vote. In that election, and in every election since, I have held my nose entering the polls -- always voting for the lessor of two evils. I trust that the day I venture to vote without such regrets and put my disappointments since 1988 behind me will be just as sweet as the end of my drought in 2004.

This is classic. Does anyone believe the reaction would have been different if Ms. Sheehan had opted for a primary challenge instead? And folks thought that the tendency to eat one's own was a uniquely Republican failing.

Here's an idea: If you guys are serious, why don't you scrap the conventions? "Nominating" conventions ceased some time ago and the current rush for states to have February primaries only highlights the extent to which these gatherings have been reduced to symbolic showpieces. Are they really needed?

I don't care which side of the debate you're on. Read the citation and you can only assume Mr. Olbermann is arguing against withdrawal until the last two sentences. It does not fit in with his rant in any way. Talk about reinforcing the stereotype of empty talking heads..

Jay Leno: President Bush’s approval numbers have dropped as low as 28 percent. That’s the lowest for any president since... Jimmy Carter, so he knows what he’s talking about. ... Now Jimmy Carter is backtracking. He now says that his comments were “misinterpreted.” I’m sure the phrase “the worst in history” can be taken any number of ways. ... A nature watchdog group says that we have five years to fix global warming or face catastrophic consequences. Like the possibility of another Al Gore movie.

"...unfortunate truth of the matter is that they're willing to play hardball on a tiny number of issues, and to give ground more or less everywhere else..." Sadly, this is too true. I would argue, however, that this stems more from the shared addiction to big government found in both neoconservatism and modern liberalism, than from a genteelness within the White House. The long term ends of public policies are not so different -- even if their short term ends seem opposed -- when the means by which those polices are implemented nearly identical. That is why modern liberalism and neoconservatism can so easily accommodate one another. When you both agree that big government is the answer, the only question left is who runs the show.

Uh....Mr. Melman.....could it possibly be that the perceived burden is lower b/c the burden is lower in reality? Poll numbers are nice but you fail to mention that taxes were cut TWICE between the polls you cite. Instead of a new receptiveness to tax increases that you see in the movement of the poll numbers, couldn't it be that folks are simply relieved that their taxes have been reduced? Go ahead, advise your clients (among whom are Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid) to raise taxes and we'll soon see which interpretation is correct.

I had hoped Huckabee or Brownback would get off to a stronger start. Unless things change over the summer (as often happens as the election cycle progresses), conservatives may need to turn to Fred for the fall season.
