POPSThe Democrat's Karl Rove I stumbled upon this blog today. The writing is quite sharp. I have to agree with one of their kudos: "Our Karl Rove is the blog you should be glad that Democratic strategists don't seem to listen to." - Comment on the conservative Galley Slaves blog That does beg the question, however. Why don't they?

POPSParties Plan Green Conventions Here's an idea: If you guys are serious, why don't you scrap the conventions? "Nominating" conventions ceased some time ago and the current rush for states to have February primaries only highlights the extent to which these gatherings have been reduced to symbolic showpieces. Are they really needed?

POPSDemocrats Follow Bush's Lead I don't intend my comments as an endorsement of President Bush or much of his agenda. That said, I find it interesting that over the past six years, many Democrats will echo the thoughts of GW after having vilified him for espousing such views months or years earlier. Remember their outrage when Bush and members of his administration spoke of 'Old Europe'? I guess it is only an example of imperialist unilateralism when spoken by evil Republicans.

POPSCan the Religious Left Sway the '08 Race? Count me as one who welcomes an active political left. Unfortunately, however, I see the sentiment expressed in the last paragraph of the clip as a major impediment to their having the voice to which they are entitled.

POPSWho Was the Most Right-Wing Man in History? "This brings me to another puzzle of ideological classification. The phrase is often used by thoughtless people, TV interviewers, tabloid columnists, etc. ‘He is even to the right of Genghis Khan.’ The implication is that Genghis Khan is on the extreme right of the political spectrum. What is the origin of this belief? And when did the phrase come into use? I believe it is hardly more than half a century old. Hitler, again, is to blame. He is seen, falsely, as the epitome of ‘the Right’. He is also seen, more accurately, as a mass killer on an unprecedented scale. Before the 20th century, the classical perpetrator of terrorist massacre, pillage and the destruction of cities was Genghis Khan."

POPSThe Conservative Mind "The divisions within contemporary American conservatism--social conservatives, libertarians, and neoconservatives--arise from differences over which goods most urgently need to be preserved, to what extent, and with what role for government. The varieties of conservatism are poorly understood today not only because of the bitterness of current political battles but also because the books that have played a key role in forming the several schools go largely untaught at our universities and largely unread by our professors. Indeed, perhaps one cause of the polarization that afflicts our political and intellectual class is the failure of our universities to teach, and in many cases to note the existence of, the conservative dimensions of American political thought."

POPSThe New Party Interesting. I definitely would like to hear from those on the other side of the pond as to their reactions and experiences with this movement. Just a flash in the pan like Perot's new party here in the US last decade? More to the libertarian side of the spectrum than Burkean conservatism? More neoconservative than conservative? Hard to get a handle on something from just a website.

POPSLessons in Political Suicide "...unfortunate truth of the matter is that they're willing to play hardball on a tiny number of issues, and to give ground more or less everywhere else..." Sadly, this is too true. I would argue, however, that this stems more from the shared addiction to big government found in both neoconservatism and modern liberalism, than from a genteelness within the White House. The long term ends of public policies are not so different -- even if their short term ends seem opposed -- when the means by which those polices are implemented nearly identical. That is why modern liberalism and neoconservatism can so easily accommodate one another. When you both agree that big government is the answer, the only question left is who runs the show.
