POPSLandmark Ruling "One change the ruling could bring soon, activists said, is in dealings with corrupt police officers, who reportedly sometimes extort money by threatening to apply the law or "out" gays and lesbians to friends or family. Akash Verma, 26, a Delhi resident, said he was returning home late one night in 2004 when two intoxicated policemen who suspected he was gay stole about $20 from his bag and demanded sex, but released him. Verma said other officers later "strongly advised" against filing a complaint. Although Verma's account could not be independently verified, gay rights activists said such behavior by police is not uncommon."

POPSAn Unforgettable Graduate "Last year, Luis worked for the No on 8 campaign, which sought to defeat the voter initiative outlawing gay marriage. He circulated pamphlets and went to marches, but at home he kept quiet, because his parents still did not know he was gay."

POPSSay Something "The more courageous among us say “Let's try something different. Let's organize ourselves based upon those things which we hold in common reverence. The first of these is our nation's basic ideals, laws and traditions. We may not fully agree what these comprise, or even their meanings. Nonetheless, we can agree in principle on some of them as a more or less consistent framework for the political, economic and social interactions of individuals and groups within our society.”

POPSLyrical Voices "Nooriala has written about the failures of the Islamic revolution, erotic love and such taboo women's subjects as abortion and menopause. She recently posted a piece dedicated to Iranians protesting the country's presidential election. I have seen your nightmares in my dreams I have kept your sorrows in my heart I picked a dandelion flown about by the wind Bringing me news, anxiety and trembling hands If you are tied down I shall be your wings If you are at war I shall be your armor Your voice will fly through the blue sky again, And your free hands will weave through the sun again."

POPSThe "What The Hell Is This Shit Helmet Award" goes to... Tanyamm! As the current holder of the much coveted Helmet Award, I think the time has come to pass it on. I'd like to give it to Tanyamm, who every day makes us all smile with her fabulous LOLcat clips and is always so polite, sweet, funny and just an all 'round great gal, who I am proud to call a fellow clipper. It was also she, who suggested we should honour each other, so no one could be more deserving of this very, very, very prestigious award. *drumroll* "THE HELMET AWARD" *applause applause applause* Congratulations, Tanyamm!! The Helmet Award is now yours and you're free to pass it on to whomever you choose. Wear it with pride. .:D

POPSAn Open Letter "Every day, LGBT Americans face discrimination and are being denied their constitutional rights. There is no one in public life who could, and based on your stated principles and promises should, do more to move America forward toward becoming a country in which LGBT people are respected and treated as fully equal under our Constitution and laws. We ask for your leadership and voice. When you lead, we will back you with every bit of heart and determination we can muster."

POPSHeterosexual Ivy League Professor Kills Wife Since people are entertaining the idea that we should ban gay adoption because an allegedly gay man is accused of molesting his adopted son, I think it is only fair that we ask, in light of this incident, if we should ban marriages involving straight men, economists, or Ivy League professors.

POPSIn Her Simplistic Universe "She has also chosen to ignore the views of religious scholars who do not share her incurious perspective. Yet, Kern is capable of being a cafeteria Christianist."

POPSA Doctor's Office That Puts Patients At Ease " I asked her to let me know in a month if it was helpful. As she was leaving, she quickly glanced around the office and told me that she was happy that she had come. "This is very unusual," she said. "I don't want to leave." I walked her to the receptionist's desk and as I did, I am sure I heard my violin playing."

POPSI Was Not Michael Jackson "He never seemed to understand, or be convinced himself. But now, listening to him sing as a child, even though I know he was too young to have a clue as to what he was singing about, I feel, just as I felt when I was a boy, that he knew and he felt exactly what he was singing. But I never, fairly, tried to understand — who he was, what he was asked to do — by our parents, by himself. And he was just a boy, how would he even know the question to ask? People will point to Michael Jackson’s discography, his surgeries, madness, all that he’s been given, earned and squandered. Many will testify about what he’s given, but I, in this moment, can only think of what he’s, we’ve, lost. The price he’s paid for where he’s been is his life. And I think about David in much the same way — the wake behind, and his narrowing future — where he is now, and how it cost him me.""

POPSStill Second Class Citizens “There’s a perception in Washington that you can throw little bits of partial equality to gay people and that gay people will be satisfied with that. Gay Americans aren’t just another political special interest group. They are Americans who are actively discriminated against by federal laws. If the president is to properly honor the memory of Stonewall, he should get up to speed on what happened there 40 years ago, when courageous kids who had nothing, not even a public acknowledgment of their existence, stood up to make history happen in the least likely of places."

POPSShooting Them In The Foot "Conservatives touted abstinence-only education, which was a flop, when real sex education was needed, most desperately in red states. According to 2006 data from the Guttmacher Institute, those red states accounted for eight of the 10 states with the highest teenage birthrates. And, a study titled “Red Light States: Who Buys Online Adult Entertainment?” that was conducted by Benjamin Edelman, an assistant professor of business at Harvard Business School and published earlier this year in the Journal of Economic Perspectives found that subscriptions to online pornography sites were “more prevalent in states where surveys indicate conservative positions on religion, gender roles, and sexuality” and in states where “more people agree that ‘I have old-fashioned values about family and marriage.’ ” They could avoid this hypocrisy by focusing more on what happens in their own bedrooms and avoiding the trap of judging what goes on in everyone else’s."

POPSZimbabwe's Diamond Fields "At a time when Zimbabwe is struggling to pay civil servants and soldiers a stipend of $100 a month, the extra income from diamond mining for soldiers is serving “to mollify a constituency whose loyalty to ZANU-PF, in the context of ongoing political strife, is essential,” the Human Rights Watch report said."

POPSGood For You Masbury Often when others speak out for social justice they become targeted and when that happens you know you are doing something right ;) Some so-called Christians are so fearful of loving the world they often confuse it with "worldliness". Mas is one of those rare individuals who realizes that morality doesn't mean doctrinal beliefs. He understands the difference between right and wrong. He realizes that a moral compass does not have to be faith-based to be real. He is a true Christian because he realizes and speaks out for fairness and justice. He realizes that God is not as small or mean as some others would have us believe. He realizes God does not hate or discriminate. He does not believe that some Americans are better than others and that God cares only about sex. So Bravo! Mas. We need more people like you in the world. :)

POPSThe Love Party "For a state with an unemployment rate above 12 percent, that ranks 39th in public school performance, that last caper might not seem all that entertaining. But it did draw the attention and affection of right-wing commentators, who nudged Sanford right up the potential-contender ladder. The peculiar thing about the apologies was that Sanford seemed to be under the impression that his worst dereliction of duty involved womanizing. There are some larger lessons here. First of all, we may want to consider the possibility that the governor’s decision to reject the federal stimulus money was not a mighty stand against government spending but instead an early sign of total nuttiness. Before this search for a presidential nominee goes any further, I’m thinking it’s time for the Republicans to apologize for putting us through the Clinton impeachment. We seem to have pretty well established that sexual stone-throwing is a dangerous sport."
