POPS5-HTTLPR and Depression So the short allele assumes that we avoid risk and have great support systems. What if we don't? "Only" 40 percent of the S variant in countries of European origin is still close to half. Most of my family is short on serotonin, and we're Scandinavian/English. There's currently no way to make more. SSRIs only make more of what you already have available for neurotransmitting. Help, medical science!

POPSMormons (Some) Doing Their Own Thinking The LDS church doesn't apologize. They have expedient "revelations" and claim that God changed his mind. The hierarchy doesn't like dissent, either. Congratulations, ldsapology.org, but be careful! You're doing the right thing here.

POPSThe Rapture: Edification I don't mean to be snide or mocking here -- not this time. I just feel so sorry for all of us sometimes. I guess we all have our irrational crutches to get us through ... I know I do. Update: I'd like to delete this clip, but Clipmarks says there has been public action on it (that I can't see, apparently). I feel bad about making this public now. Maybe a dark background will undo the damage ...? Guess not.

POPSYet Another Utah Organization Harming Humanity "Inappropriate and unnecessary"? How so, Eagle Forum? You actively oppose abortion, too, so what happens when kids who are ignorant about birth control get pregnant? Right now IS "the right time." I see the slogan "Leading the pro-family movement since 1972" at the top of your Web pages. You mean that in more ways than one, apparently.

POPSThe Dim, Private Universe of Utah Maybe someday Utah will be dragged -- kicking and screaming, naturally -- into the shared global reality EVERYBODY has to live in. I'm not holding my breath. Thanks, Pat Bagley and Salt Lake Tribune.

POPSBYU Gets to Keep Bending the Rules No surprise here, especially since Peter Morrill is from Idaho. This is probably a fair decision -- but I'm watching you, BYU. You're in my back yard anyway.

POPS"Comprised of" (for my usage collection) I see this used incorrectly all the time (although I've read that the rule seems to be changing because its misuse is so common. Etymologically speaking, though, the usage here is still wrong). The board IS COMPOSED OF station managers or it COMPRISES station managers. It is not COMPRISED OF the managers, as "comprise" means "to include" or "to contain." This is why I never get anything done. Sigh.

POPSSound Like Anyone You Know? This sounds painfully familiar to me. Won't name names, but I'm reserving one of these books at the library NOW. After I've paid my fines, I mean.

POPSThe "Holy" Bible I haven't read the Qur'an or the Torah or a great many other things -- I have read the Book of Mormon -- but this sounds like a reasonable assertion to me.

POPSHilary Would Not Have Done This Slavery has often been “traditional and universally recognized," too. Also mistreatment of women. Guess we just have to shut SOMEBODY out. (May I suggest viruses? They might not even be alive -- we're safe there. No equal rights for viruses, I say.)
2
POPSPerennial Punctuation Problem I'm pretty sure this should be "non-life-threatening." Constructions like this are confusing -- I need to look this up again in the AP Stylebook or Chicago Manual of Style or something. (This is just another clip for my English usage collection. Clipmarkers: Feel free to enlighten me.)

POPSLDS Church Doing It Again Still, not as bad as when, years ago now, they had their prophet holed up in the inner sanctums of the Salt Lake temple for days, fasting and praying and "pleading with the Lord" to allow blacks (men only, of course) to hold the priesthood. So God is a racist? He had to be convinced? Mormons, give us a break already!
