Food needs 'fundamental rethink'

by egsnyder  1-2-2009
"Essentially, what we are dealing with at the moment is a food system that was laid down in the 1940s," he told BBC News. It followed on from the dust bowl in the US, the collapse of food production in Europe and starvation in Asia.

Freeganism

by egsnyder  11-1-2008
Freegans - The ultimate frugalists http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freeganism Freeganism is an anti-consumerist lifestyle whereby people employ alternative living strategies based on "limited participation in the conventional economy and minimal consumption of resources". The website freegan.info states that freegans "embrace community, generosity, social concern, freedom, cooperation, and sharing in opposition to a society based on materialism, moral apathy, competition, conformity, and greed." The lifestyle involves salvaging discarded, unspoiled food from supermarket dumpsters that have passed their display date but haven't passed their edible date. They salvage the food not because they are poor or homeless, but as a political statement. The word "freegan" is a portmanteau of "free" and "vegan". Freeganism started in the mid 1990s, out of the antiglobalization and environmentalist movements. Groups such as Food Not Bombs served free vegetarian and vegan food that wa

Edible wild fungi: Marasmius oreades
egsnyder
by egsnyder  9-30-2008
One of my favorite wild mushrooms. I've been picking and eating this one for 30 years. It's a great mushroom to dry for long storage and rehydrate any time you're in the mood for mushrooms. Great in stews and soups. There's nothing like free food. Usually abundant on grassy areas, such as parks, in Eastern Ontario in the fall after heavy rains.

Lawnless Landscapes

Here in Ottawa, Canada, this it the PERFECT time for us to start thinking about ways to get rid of the lawn. In 2008, we all know that a monoculture, single species landscape is not self-sustaining. It needs TONS of inputs -- water, labor, fuel, fertilizer, pest and weed control, etc. What a waste! And for what?
