    by enbar  9-5-2008    1
An interactive social mashup site where New Yorkers can research construction sites in their neighborhoods, find current information on safety violations, report street-level observations, and submit news and photos. Very intelligent use of social web technology.

I've been hoping to find a replacement for BigCite, a nicely designed social quotation site that vanished some time ago. This might be it. Collect, share, tag, and save quotations. Fully Web 2.0-compliant with widgets and all that.

High childhood IQ linked to antitraditional attitudes in adults
    enbar
    by enbar  8-22-2008
A study of a large representative sample of the UK population shows that high childhood IQ is correlated with antitraditional (i.e., liberal, mostly) attitudes in adults (described as "antiracist, pro-working women, socially liberal," and democratic). This correlation is independent of gender, occupation and social class. Full PDF at the author's website (http://snipr.com/3ixli).

Maurice Bloch: religion is a consequence of imagination
    enbar

Maurice Bloch produces what sounds on first glance like a neo-Durkheimian theory of religion with a foundation in cognitive psychology. I need to look more closely at this.

So, how evil is Facebook, really?
    enbar
    by enbar  1-20-2008    3
I use Facebook every day now. I'm pretty well hooked. But this article, which talks about the intellectual pedigree (Girard), political sympathies ("Thatcherite") and financial connections (the CIA) of its board, gives me the creeps in a big way.

Old-school journalism + blogging, social networks: synergy?
    enbar
    by enbar  11-4-2007
Linked from Dave Winer's blog, I think. A cool, experimental idea: connect beat reporters with an online circle of stakeholders joined by modern net-based social-networking tools. In this scenario, the "new" "Web2.0" model of information distribution doesn't kill old-school journalism but reinvigorates it.

Interesting... If you do anything on work time or using work-related equipment that involves, say, building up a contact list which might be valuable to your employer, then your employer probably owns the intellectual property rights to it. I guess this isn't surprising, but it's easy to forget.

An odd, but potentially very cool idea. It's a tweaked blogging concept organized around sharing stories of your life from the past, rather than today's ephemera. Site layout emphasizes social timelines and displaying everyone's data together. Clearly the founders want to build strong community.

    Introduction to "communities of practice"
    enbar
    by enbar  1-13-2007
Not sure what to make of this concept, but it's interesting. Link should be www.ewenger.com/theory. Author's comment: Theoretically, my work focuses on social learning systems.I am trying to understand the connection between knowledge, community, learning, and identity. The basic idea is that human knowing is fundamentally a social act. This simple observation has profound implications for the way we think of and attempt to support learning.
