POPSGoogle to compete with Wikipedia? Very interesting. By highlighting the author of an article, or "knol", there's a clear and compelling reason to contribute articles of value. Google's internal Knol likely creates a meritocracy, where it's important and valuable to be the person who wrote the authoritative knol on a specific technical topic. Compared with Wikipedia, where most contributions are fueled by a altruistic need to create or improve articles, I can see the motives for this, but it also seems as though this would create lots of stale pages, jockeying for 'authoritative' position, and generally stifle collaboration. Interesting - but I don't think it's a wikipedia killer.

POPSgPhone is here - it's an OS, not a device This competes more with windows mobile than with the iPhone. Personally, I'm looking forward to increased competition in the mobile space, and will definitely be watching these devices closely.

POPSGoogle buys Jaiku (a twitter competitor) I'm a huge twitter fan and so haven't checked out Jaiku, but from what I understand it's basically the same idea. You send and receive short updates with your list of friends. Very interesting that the big G swooped in and picked up Jaiku and not Twitter. Maybe Biz & Ev weren't looking to sell?

POPSGoogle solar panel project Awesome to see how much energy google is producing using solar panels. you can even see the energy output just like you would a stock price in google finance. There's been quite a few developments in the past year which should help up the output on future installations like this if they come to market. It'd be great to see google get their net energy use down near 0.

POPSGoogle acquiring Feedburner for $100m I'm a huge feedburner fan, and I trust google more than anyone else to continue what they've started. With feedburner + adsense, they should continue to provide lots of value for their users, while also creating a new advertising opportunity.

POPSGetting coffee at A.placebetween.us This is brilliant. I can't tell you how many times I've bounced between google maps, citysearch, and menupages trying find something convenient to both me and the person I was meeting.

POPSGoogle to unveil PowerPoint Competitor Google continues to add to it's online office suite. For serious spreadsheet work, google spreadsheets and even OpenOffice.org still don't hold a candle to Excel, but for the other 95% of us, they're more than adequate. I have a feeling that google's presentation app will be more than most of us need, especially with the added bonus that the presentations already live online. I just hope there's an offline saving component for those times when you're presenting without wifi.

POPSGoogle's "Master Plan" movie I approach google with a "guarded trust" mentality - they've got lots of personal data on me, sure, but the good news is that it's all pretty darn boring.

POPSSearch patents with Google Finally, the difficult and costly process of patent searching is as easy as typing in a search term in google ! I'll definitely be playing around with this a bit, checking to see if anyone has snatched up patents for some of my hair brained schemes. The actual patent search is here: http://www.google.com/patents

POPSSync your Google and Outlook calendars I'd love to have my google calendar sync with my palm, but there's no tool for doing that yet. I tried remotecalendars to sync from gcal->outlook->palm but it didn't work. Finally it looks like gSyncIT will let me sync my outlook with gmail, which will allow me to keep my palm updated as well!
