POPSMcCain Fails to Understand, Sneeringly Misrepresents Sky Theater As "Overhead Projector" Andrey Kravtsov continues: "I find it appalling that Sen. McCain would call a science education tool for public (largely children) for a historic planetarium with millions of visitors a year a wasteful earmark. The planetarium's focus, as stated on their website (http://adlerplanetarium.org) is "on inspiring young people, particularly women and minorities, to pursue careers in science." Is an investment in such public facility at the time when US competitiveness in math and sciences is a constant source of alarm a waste?" No, it is not a waste. Senator McCain's failure to understand and/or appreciate the importance of science education is indeed appalling, as is his sneering, sniveling misrepresentation of this equipment as an unnecessary, overpriced "overhead projector".

POPSThe challenge for teachers of technology The author draws a good analogy between lessons learned from driving-- the limitations of memorizing routes vs. getting lost and discovering the lay of the land--and lessons learned from teaching. He discusses "the value of education founded in general principles, rather than a rote memorization of steps to accomplish specific goals."

POPSPlato In 7 Minutes The school founded by this antique philosopher, became a prototype of modern higher education. Contemporaries named him «the divine teacher»: in his works it was spoken about an ideal society structure and immortality of the soul. Plato said, that «time is a moving similarity of eternity».

POPSSome Canadian Schools Wanna Sell Soap Does your child wanna go to MacDonald's Fun Meal High? Or perhaps Walmart's Smart Price Middle School? What kind of thinking is taking place in Ottawa these days? Public educational institutions should not be turned into gigantic commercial billboards for the sake of raising funds. Come on folks in Ottawa-Carleton, come up with something more sensible and realistic. Creativity is one thing, but this kind of thinking is just plain crass.

POPSCall for G8 to help stem corruption in Africa: Zambia President Mwanawasa's administration is promoting private sector development for third world countries, but needs help to stop corrupt leaders from stealing the aid and other monies needed for development. This is something that has frustrated me for a long time. So much money has been given to aid African countries, with the goal of delivering food, water, healthcare and education to the people and hopefully help them become self-sufficient, yet time and again corrupt "leaders" steal the money. When I read this news article today I was relieved to learn that ethical leaders in Africa are also frustrated by the corruption, and that they are trying to find ways to thwart it. Hopefully the G8 have the ethics needed to heed the plea and do the right thing.

POPSShortcuts make education fun This is just one of Jeff Harris' educational comics. Go to his past issues to see the remarkable collection he has created. His comics appear in the Classrooms section of a newspaper I read, and apparently are distributed by the NEA.

POPS'Inconvenient Truth' called too controversial Now we will have 7 more brainwashed people she created believing the same falsifications: "said Frosty Hardison, a parent of seven who also said that he believes the Earth is 14,000 years old. "The information that's being presented is a very cockeyed view of what the truth is. ... The Bible says that in the end times everything will burn up, but that perspective isn't in the DVD.""

POPSChina's population to increase by 200 million in 30 years " According to the plan set out in the report, county and town-level agencies in rural areas should improve their services to better implement family planning policies. Families with one child will be rewarded by the government, and the endowment insurance system in rural areas should be strengthened to improve care for the elderly. The report also calls for improvements to the nine-year compulsory education system, the control of HIV/AIDS and public health services."

POPSSchools can't fix "Spoilt brats and arrogant prima donnas" South African schools apparently have the same problems as schools in the USA and other countries: poor student performance and discipline problems. 200 South African schools are threatened with closure if performance does not improve by the end of the month. I found it interesting that the teacher's union is defensive and opposes the closings, while the Dept of Education states that their research showed that dysfunctional parenting is contributing to the children's unmanageable behavior and poor performance in school. This sounds so very familiar to me, based on what I know of the educational system in the USA.

POPSSurprising Secret to a Long Life: Stay in School An interesting read. I'm not sure if the key factor is school itself. IMO it is education, whether via traditional school or through self-teaching, that makes all the difference in life. Being taught to think is what is important.
