POPSVote With Your Fork Vote against dependence on oil. Vote for lower health care costs. Vote against all disposable bags at the grocery store. Vote for healthy food choices at restaurants. Vote against unhealthy food choices. Vote for locally grown produce. Vote against the inhumane treatment of animals. Vote for organically-grown food. Vote against eating on the run. Vote for smaller portions. Vote against food waste. If you get frustrated at the current food environment, do something about it. Every dollar you spend, every food choice you make, and every meal you eat is an opportunity to vote for what you believe in. We can't change the way our food environment is structured overnight, but we can make a difference three times a day by voting with our forks.

POPSCanadian grocers not pulling tomatoes "Some Canadian producers, meanwhile, say they are seeing an increase in demand from U.S. buyers as U.S. health officials work to trace the source of the multi-state salmonella food poisoning outbreak. “We've been getting lots of calls from U.S. buyers looking to purchase our tomatoes,” said Maureen Sheehan, the marketing director for B.C. Hot House Foods Inc. “They know our product is safe.” Canadian retailers are also buying Canadian as they continue to stock tomatoes for their customers."

POPSAnimals can't speak for themselves "It would be a mistake to idealise traditional animal husbandry as the standard by which the animal-products industry falls short: traditional animal husbandry is brutal enough, just on a smaller scale. A better standard by which to judge both practices would be the simple standard of humanity: is this truly the best that human beings are capable of?"

POPSDoes Tesco have the US "in the bag" for healthy food? Tesco is bringing Fresh & Easy healthy foods to the US, counting on a demand for healthy, organic food. Not for those who buy their groceries from Wal-Mart to save money, oblivious or apathetic about the health and ethical costs of "cheap" foods. When I visit California I like to shop at Trader Joe's. Next time I'm in Los Angeles I hope to find a Fresh & Easy store, too.

POPSChina destroys US imports, citing safety standards not met! Obvious retaliation...after all the rejection of Chinese exports in the US recently due to concerns over the safety of Chinese food and health products. We don't accept their poisoned goods, they don't accept our goods. China has also rejected Evian water from France, citing high bacteria levels. Uh huh.

POPSChickens Are People Too! *LOL* I've had lots of pet chickens. My last one, Molly was a fiery little "Red Dwarf" with an awesome attitude! She was queen of the roost even over all the cats. Aah, I loved that funny hen. *LOL* Anyway! I'm not a vegan. I believe chickens are "meant" to be eaten by us, just as we one day will be food for others, be it worms or Azaleas. (or White Pointers, if you're an Aussie. Ha ha!) The point is respect. Treat animals with dignity and respect and be thankful for the nourishment they provide. We're all just part of the food chain. Don't waste or squander, but be thankful for the food you are lucky to have. (Not all are as lucky as us, to be able to eat every day.) Check out all the cool comments from fellow clippers on the clip about plants having feelings , for some really cool thoughts on consciousness and awareness and interconnectedness. Mind-expanding! Molly died of old age, by the way...

POPSAre The Chinese Trying To Tell Us Something? This is scary. My family does not live and can not yet afford to move to a property where we can produce our own food; particularly, vegetables and fruits. We don't live near a farmer's market. So, we rely, like many Americans, on our local commissary or supermarket. The way I read this article, it's telling us there is very little we can do about this problem of tainted food and other necessities because by squashing China's imports we would be shooting ourselves in the foot. So it seems as if China is sending us poison--because they can. And there is nothing we can do about it. Even a vegan diet is not immune to potential poisoning unless you totally go homegrown.

POPSFood allergies: one bite can be fatal Having had a parent with severe food allergies, and now a child, these articles are very disturbing. No matter how careful someone usually is, just one mistake (bite) can end in death. This is yet another story of a child lost because of one mistake.

POPSThe Animal Rescue Site This clip was inspired by a fellow clipper and his dog. A beautiful pooch, who's life wasn't so rosy to begin with, but who today is just a picture of health and happiness. Helping out does make a difference, a HUGE difference. All you have to do, is click... .;)

POPSFiller in Animal Feed Is Open Secret in China Here's a bit more: “Many companies buy melamine scrap to make animal feed, such as fish feed,” said Ji Denghui, general manager of the Fujian Sanming Dinghui Chemical Company, which sells melamine. “I don’t know if there’s a regulation on it. Probably not. No law or regulation says ‘don’t do it,’ so everyone’s doing it. The laws in China are like that, aren’t they? If there’s no accident, there won’t be any regulation.” Madness. Greed. Lack of conscience. It's an open secret in China. Big corporations elsewhere hide these same characteristics from us, but they are really no different.

POPSPAWS: pet project helps seniors, too Heartwarming news for a change! Side note: Ola Carlson, the elderly woman featured in this story, apparently led a wild life. Read the article for the racy details. :D
