"It May Be Too Late to Save the Ice Caps"
invictus
by invictus  2-19-2007    14
The new report is expected to say this means there is "a significant probability that some large-scale events (eg deglaciation of major ice sheets) may no longer be avoided due to historical greenhouse gas emissions and the inertia of the climate system".

Snow? In Australia?!?
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  12-25-2006    4
More freakish weather...and not a snowflake in sight here where it should be. Here in the country where I live at the moment, we've only had below freezing temps two nights in ALL! Just read, that here it's been/is the hottest winter on record EVER! No global warming some say? Yeah right!! Tell it to the Easter Bunny!

U.N. panel blames humans for warming
invictus
by invictus  2-1-2007    3
The draft accord projects that Arctic ice will shrink, and perhaps disappear in summers by 2100, while heatwaves and downpours would get more frequent. The numbers of tropical hurricanes might decrease but the storms would become stronger.

Is climate change boosting hurricanes?
invictus
by invictus  8-9-2007
What it tells us, says Mooney, is that the link between climate change and hurricanes is complicated. As he emphasizes again and again, “global warming did not cause Hurricane Katrina, or any other weather disaster.” On the other hand, statistical analysis of the past century’s hurricanes and computer modeling of a warmer climate, nudged along by greenhouse gases, does indicate that rising ocean temperatures could fuel hurricanes that are more intense.

Disappearance of the Ganges
Deepti
by Deepti  12-13-2006    2
Much of the river water comes from underneath the glacier. If the glacier at Gaumukh does continue to recede or melt away, and if the Ganges would ever cease its flow or begin to dry up, it would certainly mean the end of an era and a drastic effect on the spiritual culture as we have known it in India. Indeed, it would never be the same.
