Summer Allergies: For Many, Nothing to Sneeze At
    kmcolo
    by kmcolo  7-10-2008
Food allergies are on the rise in the developing world. There is indication that doctors have given the wrong information in recommending that the very young avoid certain foods (such as nuts and peanuts) and maybe should recommend higher than 'normal' amounts. An interesting interview.

Little (and disputed) evidence of negative effects of absorbed sunscreens. Might lead to feminization of bodily hormone mixture but this is not verified in other study. Don't worry about sunscreens preventing vitamin D production.

Interview: Mark Schapiro, toxic products and U.S. Policy
    kmcolo
    by kmcolo  12-14-2007
An information packed interview. Many goods in the U.S. contain materials that are toxic including toys. These are allowed under U.S. law. The global center of regulatory power shifted in 2005 from Washington to Brussels with expansion of the E.U. The regulation process in Washington is dominated by corporate special interests.

FDA to Ignore Cow Drug Warnings
    kmcolo
    by kmcolo  3-4-2007    1
This is a serious breach of the public good, all for short term profit. This drug is one of the last lines of defense against antibiotic resistant bacteria (super-bugs). It is the overuse of antibiotics that has led to the evolution of super-bugs and the largest abuse of these drugs is in the livestock industry. Thisapproval process should be put to a halt as soon as possible. At a minimum, antibiotics approved for use in the livestock industry should not be ones that are presently our last lines of defense.

Jet Setting Is For the Young
    kmcolo
    by kmcolo  11-9-2006
As most jet setters know, life in the fast lane exacts a high price. Any departure from usual day/night routine can play havoc with biological clocks and lead to chronic jetlag. Now, a new study in mice suggests that jetlag--and analogous conditions suffered by shift workers and others--might be more than just a nuisance but a serious danger to health.
