POPSPrayers for a Mommy and Her Lil'l Sprout to Violette and Family I just learned about this story via entrecard dropping on mommiesmarbles.com. I hope you will visit 'survival of the furriest's" blog and leave your prayers. Her li'l sprout had a fall and past away recently I can't even imagine the heartache they must feel. One of the biggest fears we all have as parents is saying goodbye to our babies too soon.

POPSWould you forget your child? I can't imagine and yet we hear about these tragedies every year. Living in the hot AZ climate it seems to happen quite often here. What are these parents/caregivers thinking? or Not thinking?

POPSExternalities in the Classroom: How Children Exposed to Domestic Violence Affect Everyone’s Kids kids exposed to kids exposed to domestic violence also have lower test scores and more disciplinary infractions. Around 70 percent of the classes in their sample have at least one kid exposed to domestic violence. The authors compare the outcomes of that kid’s classmates with their counterparts in the same school and the same grade in a previous or subsequent year — when there were no kids exposed to family violence — finding large negative effects. ...

POPSMissing Without A Trace-Caylee Anthony This case saddens me and disheartens me to think a mother and her family could be hiding the truth as to what happened to this sweet little girl...please share, hopefully someone sees her alive.

POPSYoung Children and Testing Dr. Daniel: High quality early childhood programs assess children’s learning to ensure that the curriculum is meeting young children’s needs. Curriculum and assessment occur in a never-ending cycle that allows teachers and parents to gather evidence of a child's progress in skill development as well as the understanding of concepts. If parents or teachers suspect developmental delays, a developmental screening can let them know if a further diagnostic evaluation is necessary. The input of a specialist combined with the observations of parents and teachers can be used to further individualize the child’s learning environment to maximize their growth and all around development. No one test or assessment should be used to determine a young child's future involvement in educational activities. NAEYC feels that high-stakes testing should not be employed among young children prior to the third grade. Young children are not reliable test-takers.

POPSSynthetic Turf Declared Safe for Play The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has given the green light for children to play on synthetic athletic fields after evaluating the risks of potential lead exposure. The group noted that while lead was detected on some older fields - confirming parents' fears - it didn't reach levels that would cause harm to kids. But take note: CPSC still recommends that children wash their hands after playing outside, especially before eating. Just in case.

POPSHappiness, not necessarily an advantage "This scientific debate raises the question of why sadness exists at all, Forgas says. “If sadness has no benefit, why is it so ubiquitous?” he asks. " Maybe happiness or sadness are obsolete descriptions? We need a different language.

POPSFirst Years Last a Lifetime This Clinical Pediatrics abstract calls pediatricians to consider the long-term impact of early childhood experiences in order to promote "proven best intervention practices."

POPSFood allergies as a weapon for school bullies A very disturbing story -- some school bullies have been using peanut butter as a weapon to terrorize peanut-allergic kids. Consequences are potentially fatal. Archived: http://www.webcitation.org/5Z2UxH0lU . Story also uses the word "consequating," new on me.

POPSSharing Childbearing Equally with Wife Many of us-men as well as women-simply assume that women know more about kids than men. I'd really like to share the childcare equally with my wife. Here are some things you can do.

POPSGot any nude photos of your baby? Shred them. Now! Several people, all of whom I'd objectively call "innocent," have been investigated by the FBI, humiliated, arrested, and effectively destroyed by scandal when photo-developing and computer-repair shops discovered that they had photographed their young children naked. One father lost custody of his kids for taking a photo of them mooning him. The argument is: "we all have to view innocent photos through the eyes of a pedophile, for the good of the children." Effing scary. I mean, I've taken several pictures of my son in the bathtub, and according to this article, that makes me effectively guilty of child pornography. Better take those shots off of Snapfish.com.

POPSProposed law to ban spanking Hooray for more government control. We can't be trusted to make any decisions anymore. I welcome the big inclusive handbook for Government Sanctioned Childrearing. Do you think NY and CA will get together and propose criminalizing feeding transfats to a child? Wouldn't it be safer and smarter to just take our kids away at birth and put them in a Government Controlled Childcare Facility? Why take a risk that parents might screw something up?
