Japan's Global Ambitions
honey999
by honey999  2-27-2007
India & Japan are both vying for a permanent seat in the UNSC, with or without the coveted veto power. With the failure of a combined attempt by G-4 to effect Security Council reform, it appears that a nation going solo will find it easier to get the seat, rather than if it tried to get in with a group. In this situation India may lose out to Japan. Japan has everything going for it- money, influence , & most importantly US' support. Though China will most probably exercise its veto power to prevent Japan coming on board, this is no relief for India either, whose bid is far more likely to elicit the Chinese veto. However Japan's energetic attempts at bolstering its credentials may carry the day for them when the opurtunity arises.

China will perhaps be ready to reduce greenhouse gas emission in the next year or so
luixxiul
by luixxiul  2-10-2007
This must be a great step for the climate change regime if this will be true, since in the regime China has played a role as veto country, especially on behalf of G77+China. Here we can estimate that the last IPCC report, in which Chinese scientists participated better than before, played a important part in having the nation rethink on the issue. Throughout organising the report, naturally China has acquired knowledge more than before. I suspect this work made it possible for them to make a course correction.
