FBI Abuses Patriot Act
mbthorman
by mbthorman  3-6-2008
FBI agents are human beings who, like all human beings, carry grudges, hold strong prejudices, have unreasonable fears, can become overly involved, and often become confused between security and privacy. Should they have uncontrolled access to our private records?

NAFtA AND CAFTA
mbthorman
by mbthorman  2-14-2008
Here in Costa Rica, CAFTA is already running into major problems. The legislative body is refusing to rewrite the country's laws to comply with CAFTA requirements. The plebicite to accept CAFTA split the country practically in half. The vote was extremely close.

This is what happens when . . .
mbthorman
by mbthorman  9-26-2007
This is what happens when several countries make a treaty that is poorly worded or doesn't take into account possible future developments. I am predicting that Costa Rica will get the shaft if the Ticos vote for inclusion in CAFTA. They will have to serve two masters - the CAFTA and their own constitution.

Army Tests Brains of Men Going into Combat
mbthorman
by mbthorman  9-20-2007    2
The unintended consequences of the war in Iraq is that thousands of people including our military units are becoming permanently brain damaged with diseases that look like personality disorders (read crazy and dangerous). How many are killed is reported. How many are left permanently (and sometimes dangerously) disabled is not reported. Scary.

My kids have already become strict vegetarians while I'm beginning to become one. At least I don't eat red meat or pork, My decision was based on the economics (use of land vs nutrition) and on distribution of food world wide. By cutting out beef, pork, sheep, and goats as food sources we can live longer and so can the planet. Mice studies have shown that more protein in the diet causes the mice to grow faster, but the mice also age sooner and die earlier.

GM Crops produce more trouble than food.
mbthorman
by mbthorman  9-1-2007
Because GM crops have not been properly tested for health and safety over the long term for both humans and the enviroment and because many questions persist over who will control future food production, many countries are banning GM crops and many more people are protesting governemnt and private plans to test these crops in a manner which would almost certainly lead to the spread of the GM crops to non-GM crop fields.

Genetically Modified Crops Produce More Trouble Than Food
mbthorman
by mbthorman  9-1-2007
The large chemical companies vying for control of GM crops are running into an increasingly vocal people's protest against them. GM crops are impossible to control environmentally and threaten farmers with future disaster. No one has really tested these crops for long-term safety both to animals and to the environment.

Wow! My daughter lives in Texas and sent me this article. I wish I could see this web! Shades of "Arachnophobia"? But it must have been beautiful and now it is helping trap millions of mosquitos. We could use that here in Costa Rica. Hemorrhagic Dengue is very bad this year. But at least we have millions of spiders spinning webs.

Ecological Paradise Being Destroyed Greed
mbthorman
by mbthorman  8-30-2007
For years Costa Rica has allowed hotels, golf courses, and resorts to get away with illegal and dangerous waste disposal by simply dumping it into the ocean instead of forcing environmental impact planning and inspection and proper sanitation control. Some of Costa Rica's most beautiful and popular nature reserves and beaches have begun becoming so polluted that bathers are beginning to avoid certain areas of the beach because of the stench.

Rove and Cheney Flee Sinking Administration

Many groups are joining forces to demonstrate their discontent with the current USA administration's policies. Ramsey Clark is leading the effort to impeach Bush and Cheney. Others want an end to the war in Iraq. Civil libertarians want the rights of the citizens restored and the Constitution upheld, Events are planned around the country.

by mbthorman  8-25-2007
The bottom line is that current sunscreens really do not protect against skin cancers and other problems with UVA. Also many claim to be waterproof or sweatproof, but there have been no guidelines for these claims. Better use a hat and cover up if you are sun sensitive!

Looks like a large number of organizations or working together to promote a huge "Impeach Bush/Anti-Iraw War" demonstration in D.C. on Sept. 15. The Bush administration is trying hard to stop it. Is there really enough resentment against the Bush admin. to have Bush, et al running scared? The clip is from a notice from ImpeachBush.org

Sounds good at first reading, but then note the 200 meter isolation. This is nothing considering that both wind caried pollen and insect carried pollen will inevitably cross over a small area such as 200 meters. Contamination of nearby natural crops cannot be assured!
