POPSCalling A Bribe A BRIBE Probably because when we think of bribes, we usually think of the petty kind – slipping a bill to a policeman to avoid getting a ticket, using the money-scissors to snip annoying red tape, and the like. But a politician, just like a cop, is a public official with power over citizens and the potential to be corrupted. The difference is only in scope. Jack Abramoff, who went to prison for managing to dig beneath even Washington’s bedrock of corruption, has apparently reformed, coming out with a book that’s earned praise even from Michael Moore. WorldNetDaily sums up Abramoff’s history: “The scandals triggered by Abramoff led to the convictions of 20 people for payoffs in exchange for political favors, including Republican Rep. Bob Ney of Ohio. Abramoff was released in June after nearly fours years in federal prison.” Alas, those 20 unfortunates were only the cutting edge, the few caught going beyond accepted limits.

POPSRare Attack on Afghan Shiites Kills Dozens
The faction, which isn't thought to have attacked in Afghanistan before, previously was known for kidnapping two former Pakistani spies and a British journalist in Pakistan's tribal area. The spies, including Col. Imam, known as the godfather of the Taliban, later were killed. Afghanistan's Shiites are mostly members of the Hazara ethnic minority, which suffered brutal discrimination at the hands of the Taliban government that ruled the country before the 2001 U.S.-led invasion. The attacks came as representatives from the United States and some 90 other nations and organizations concluded a meeting in Germany about the transition of security responsibilities to Afghan forces, which are due to take full control of the country by 2014. "An attack against Ashoura pilgrims on one of the holiest of days in the Islamic calendar is an attack against Islam itself, and we denounce and condemn these atrocities in the strongest of terms," said Gen. POPSObama’s Threatened Veto of Indefinite Detention Bill Is NOT to Protect Liberty
By requiring military detention of the captured, Congress is undoing all the maneuvering that two regimes have accomplished in removing POW status from detainees. he November 17 letter to the Senate from the Executive Office of the President says that the Obama regime does not want the authority it has under the Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF), Public Law 107-40, to be codified. Codification is risky, the regime says. In other words, the regime is saying that under AUMF the executive branch has total discretion as to who it detains and how it treats detainees. Moreover, as the executive branch has total discretion, no one can find out what the executive branch is doing, who detainees are, or what is being done to them. Those who see hope in Obama’s threatened veto have jumped to conclusions if they think the veto is based on constitutional scruples. more How Does Liberty Die? http://bit.ly/txrqVR http://www.washingtonsblog.com

POPSNetworks Cheer Obama 'Channeling Teddy' Roosevelt, Attacking 'Grinch-Like' GOP 'Misers'
Presidential historian Douglas Brinkley says that's why Mr. Obama chose the same small town in Kansas to frame his message. DOUGLAS BRINKLEY, PRESIDENTIAL HISTORIAN: He's trying to paint the Republicans as sort of being anti-American, of being Grinch-like, being misers. And this is timed here with the holiday season, with the need for some, you know, tax breaks for the middle class. He's got to reclaim the great American center right now, and the figure who speaks for the center is Theodore Roosevelt. PLANTE (on-camera): Now, Kansas is a red state, of course. POPS“Twin-Earth” Has Right Temperature for Life Kepler-22b is 600 light-years away. Every 290 days, it orbits a star that is just a bit smaller and cooler than our own sun. The Kepler telescope, launched in 2009 to scan the skies for Earth-like worlds, found the planet because it sees the orbit edge on. That means that every 290 days, the world transits the surface of the star, blocking out a minute fraction of its light. Borucki likes to call the new discovery the Christmas planet. “It’s a great gift,” he said at a press conference here this morning. “We were very fortunate to find it.” The first of the three observed transits occurred only days after Kepler started observing. The third one was seen just before Christmas 2010, shortly before the spacecraft was unable to carry out any observations because of a technical glitch. Says Borucki: “We could’ve easily missed it altogether.” more http://bit.ly/tYlS52 http://www.wired.com

POPSThe Winter of Our Economic Discontent Russian voters who watched Putin build palaces for himself while their roads decayed did the unthinkable by challenging his cult of personality at the polls, and despite the massive voter fraud, dealt a severe blow to his grip on power. As long as Putin holds executive power, the repression will double and the suicides, violent assaults and criminal trials against critics will continue—but it’s clear to everyone that he has lost any popular mandate to rule. Obama lost his popular mandate in 2010, and no matter what happens in 2012, his rule has already ended. Like Putin, he wields executive power, but without the support of the public. It’s ironic that he played such a key role in removing Gaddafi when he had more than a little in common with him. The vain showboating, the flagrant corruption and the constant speeches are a feature of both regimes.

POPSA picture from President Obama's post-Constitutional America ... Earlier this year, the department sent a request to companies seeking help in compiling hard data... Doesn't that just warm the cockles of your heart? On average, each taxpaying household in America sends about $1,000 a year to the USDA to provide food stamps to the "needy". And the USDA has no idea what kinds of foods are actually being purchased with your money. Isn't a vast, unelected, unaccountable federal bureaucracy grand? And then there's the criminal activity associated with EBTs. As you might have predicted with billions in "free", taxpayer money at stake, fraud is rampant with EBTs. Recent investigations in Arizona, Connecticut, Illinois*, Indiana*, Kansas*, Massachusetts, Michigan*, Minnesota*, New York, Ohio*, Oklahoma*, Oregon, South Carolina, Washington, and Wyoming* point to systematic exploitation of food stamps for criminal and terrorist activities. by Doug Ross http://directorblue.blogspot.com

POPSAvtobaza: Iran's Weapon in Alleged RQ-170 Affair? So there is no script in the propaganda textbook for these kinds of incidents. They tend to evolve in their own way. Iran may never produce evidence to back up their claims, or they might later today. Interestingly, the International Security Assistance Force has made no effort to deny Iran's claims. Instead, the NATO headquarters in Kabul issued a statement acknowledging the loss of one of their UAVs over western Afghanistan last week. The statement also suggested the Iranians may have simply found the misplaced UAV for them. It may be important that NATO officials did not deny Iran's claims that the UAV was the RQ-170, which is known to operate from Kandahar where it was originally spotted. more Iran's Weapon in Alleged RQ-170 affair? Who on Earth would contend with that, especially when the enemy was not the Third Reich, but benign modern democracies? Moreover, the villain Hessel repeatedly mentioned and attacked was Israel — the country most people in France love to hate already. “Outraged” movements claiming to follow the old Frenchman’s philosophy bloomed in countries hit by recession or bankruptcy, like Spain, Greece, the UK, Chile, and more recently the United States. All “outraged“ movements tended to follow a single pattern. Citizens with no explicit political affiliation “occupied“ major streets, squares, or public spaces for days or weeks, day and night, insisting upon “social justice” or “change.” They erected little booths and tent villages, both in order to sleep there and to make it more difficult to be moved out or blocked by police the following day. Clearly, the so-called Arab Spring was connected to Hessel’s “outraged“ campaign. ... The much more complex Libyan, Yemenite, Bahraini, ...

AT&T finally decided to abandon their merger plans after this hassle and asked the FCC to allow them to withdraw their application, which was granted. The Palestinian people must have the right to govern themselves, and reach their potential, in a sovereign and contiguous state. Obama waited towards the end of his speech on the Middle East and North Africa to throw our most reliable Mideast ally, and the region’s only true democracy, under the bus. His timing, on the eve of his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu at the White House on Friday, could not have been more provocative. Prime Minister Netanyahu did not waste any time in reacting to Obama’s gambit. POPSThe Blindness of Big Government Democracy When central banks in America and Europe injected liquidity into the global marketplace earlier this week, the stock market soared to euphoric highs, even though the underlying dangers remained. Successful people learn the value of making sacrifices to achieve long-term goals. They realize, in short, that there is a cost associated with immediate gratification, and sometimes conclude these costs are too high to bear. These calculations dissolve completely when politics and Big Government are involved. Last year, responding to questions about the impending collapse of Social Security, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said in essence that he didn’t see a serious problem right away, and someone should wake him up when it becomes a front-page disaster. That’s Big Government in a nutshell. The long-term promises contained in something like the Budget Control Act of 2011 are just words on paper.

POPSPutin Prepares The Russian Empire to Strike Back Elements of Putin's strategy to make Russia great again are slowly coming into focus. Much of the plan is defined by Russia's opposition to the US, the traditional foe. Thus the Kremlin announced last week that it would renounce the strategic arms reduction treaty (known as New Start) agreed with Washington two years ago if the US did not abandon its European missile defence plans. This announcement, coupled with the unveiling of a new Russian missile base in Kaliningrad on Nato's doorstep, has striking implications. New Start was the centrepiece of Barack Obama's 2009 "reset" of bilateral relations. The reset is viewed by the White House as a major foreign achievement (and 2012 re-election asset) for a president who has but few to his name.

POPSThe Newt to Meet With The Donald First, it may help him appeal even more to the Tea Party wing of the GOP that Gingrich has aggressively courted. Second, Trump’s endorsement would invite scorn and ridicule from the mainstream media, which would set Gingrich up as an antagonist against an institution, the mainstream press, that rank and file conservative voters tend to despise. Gingrich’s comeback can be traced back to when he started pugnaciously snarling at questions posed by members of the elite media and a Trump endorsement would give Gingrich another opportunity to jostle and spar with the media, something Gingrich does with relish and better than anyone next to Sarah Palin. And third, a Trump endorsement of Gingrich would almost surely ensure that should Gingrich win the nomination, Trump would not run as an independent candidate in the general election, something Trump and his advisers have repeatedly threatened he would do if Trump was not satisfied with the Republican nominee.

POPSObama Proposes Tax Increases to Pay for Tax Cuts
He wants to beat up on the oil industry to fund green energy boondoggles. And he wants to beat up on private equity when it's already hard to get people to invest (as Megan McArdle points out, hedge fund managers don't really get that much tax benefit from carried interests) Megan McArdle points out the obvious: But more importantly, paying for the bill with tax hikes--any tax hikes--is going to substantially reduce the stimulus this bill provides. Just as government spending boosts aggregate demand, tax hikes (yes, even on rich people), reduce aggregate demand. Providing stimulus through payroll tax cuts that are financed with tax hikes on other people is like trying to boost your household income by making your wife pay you to mow the lawn. I'm sceptical that "aggregate demand" is really the problem (see Arnold Kling), but if you believe in it, then increasing taxes to cut taxes is self-evidently silly. by Joe Kristan Tax Update Blog http://www.rothcpa.com

POPS*UPDATED* The #OccupyWallStreet Rap Sheet
The plan was a simple one. The path to Obama’s second term requires that enough voters forget that our current economic woes are the fault of a failed President who enjoyed two years of having every single item on his wish-list passed by (Democratic Congress.) And so the idea was to create Occupy in order to give the MSM the cover they desired to spend every single day up until the election talking about greed and income inequality in order to blame both for the stagnant economy. The hope was that by repeating this message incessantly, enough voters could be convinced that Wall Street, and by extension, evil Republicans, were to blame for our chronic unemployment, record deficits, and stillborn economic growth. President Obama who? Fortunately for America, this plan has not only failed miserably it has backfired completely.
