Navigation from the toolbar The address bar shortcut should be as instinctual as breathing by now, but there's a few more shortcuts to that top bar that you should keep in mind * Select location bar: Ctrl/Cmd+L or Alt+D * Select search bar: Ctrl/Cmd+K * Back: Backspace or Alt/Cmd+Left * Forward: Alt/Option+Right or Shift+Backspace * Change search engine: Ctrl/Cmd+Down (Next) +Up (Previous) The last shortcut, used to change the search engine A less-known feature, Caret browsing, inserts a cursor into the text of the page and is very useful for highlighting and copying text.

FREE EMAIL S2284 THE SENATE VOTE FOR DOMESTIC ENERGY PRODUCTION
merrie
by merrie  5-12-2008
What the McConnell amendment would do: •Produce up to 24 billion barrels of oil when fully enacted—enough oil to keep America running for 5 years with no foreign imports. •Allow petitions for leasing activities on the Outer Continental Shelf—an area with 14 billion barrels of known recoverable oil. •As no new refineries have been built in the U.S. in 30 years, give the EPA authority to expedite permits for refineries •Establish a competitive oil and gas leasing program for ANWR •Repeal the $4000 fee for new permit applications to drill. •Repeal the 2007 provision that reduces mineral leasing revenue payments to the states. •Repeal the moratorium on funds to encourage the commercial leasing of oil shale. Isn’t it time Congress came to its senses and voted for U.S. domestic energy production?

Bob Barr Plans To Enter Presidential Contest As Libertarian

and says federal authorities have seized powers not granted by the constitution, and believes US forces should be brought home from Iraq. The Libertarian Party stands for non-interference by the US government in the personal and business lives of Americans, and advocates lower taxes, a smaller government and more individual freedom. The 59-year-old said he was not concerned about the prospect of damaging McCain, possibly among conservative voters whom the Republican candidate has had trouble courting. Independent and third parties have faced a tough task in modern US election history of breaking the dominance of the Democratic and Republican parties, though several candidates have played a spoiler role. Many Democrats still blame consumer advocate Ralph Nader, who has already announced a 2008 run, for depressing former vice president Al Gore's vote in 2000, and helping George W. Bush to capture the presidency.

Leonardo Da Vinci's 10 Best Ideas
alanocu
by alanocu  5-12-2008    5
I had never heard of his scuba gear designs. From the source page: "Da Vinci's fascination with the sea spurred many designs for aquatic exploration. His diving suit was made of leather, connected to a snorkel made of cane and a bell that floated at the surface. Proving the artist was also practical, the suit included a pouch the diver could urinate in."

Marcus Luttrell, Author Of Best-Seller "Lone Survivor"
merrie
by merrie  5-12-2008
Tons of you are reading “Lone Survivor,” the NYTimes best-seller I’ve spotlighted here and here. Now, there’s this incredible news from Hollywood gossip columnist Nikki Finke. Tinseltown wants to make a movie out of the book: I hear there’s a frenzied Hollywood bidding war going on today over the No. 1 book on The New York Times non-fiction bestseller list: Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes Of SEAL Team 10 by Marcus Luttrell. Studio toppers are interrupting their vacations to try to get this book which was sold to Little Brown by superagent Ed Victor for a seven figure advance. How interesting that liberal Hollywood is hot for this patriotic tell-all by a proud conservative.

Burma's Junta Counts Its Fake Votes, Millions In Peril
merrie
by merrie  5-12-2008    1
GRAPHIC PHOTO A US diplomat based in Rangoon claims the figure may be as high as 100,000 dead. The junta trumpeted what it claimed was a "massive turnout" in its constitutional referendum on Saturday, as thousands of tonnes of food, medical supplies and emergency relief specialists waited on tarmacs around the world for permission to enter the country. "Diarrhoea rates are very high in many of the affected townships; for children under five, diarrhoea is a disaster, adding, malaria and dengue were endemic to this region. United Nations agencies are concerned that there are hundreds of thousands of traumatised, injured people and that if they do not get medical treatment, they will die. Doctors in one hospital were treating up to 5000 outpatients a day, said Unicef's health chief in Rangoon. "They are exhausted. They are working long hours and they really need support. "They are full of patients and they cannot be treated properly due to a lack of human resources and drugs."

The Illusion That Is Barack Obama
merrie
by merrie  5-12-2008    37
For all his Camelot-like rhetoric, Obama is a product, in significant measure, of the political culture that Chicago Tribune columnist John Kass described as "The Chicago Way" At no point did Obama, the would-be saviour of US politics, challenge this corruption, except for face-saving gestures as a legislator. Emil Jones, the machine-made president of the Senate, allowed him to sponsor a minor ethics bill. In return, Obama made sure to send plenty of pork to Jones's district. When asked about pork-barrel spending, Jones famously replied: "Some call it pork; I call it steak." Obama repaid the generosity. When he had a chance to back clean Democratic candidates for president of the Cook County board of supervisors and Illinois governor, he stayed with the allies of the Outfit. In the Illinois Senate, he made a specialty of voting present. Obama is such a down-the-line partisan that, in the past two years he has voted with the Democrats more often than did the party's majority lea

Anti-Jihad 'University': Bringing Insurgents In From The Cold

by merrie  5-12-2008
While I was not permitted to talk privately with detainees, I visited both Camp Cropper, near Baghdad International Airport, and remote Camp Bucca, near Basra in southern Iraq. A major tipping point in the program, say officers, was when detainees began volunteering for the classes being offered. Although al-Qaida detainees and the Takfiris (another group of religious extremists) pressured fellow Iraqis against participating in the very popular religious discussions, over 3,000 detainees have done so. “After Iraqis here learn how to read and write, they can read the Koran themselves for the first time,” says Sheikh Ali, a Sunni who counsels detainees and who, like most of the Iraqis working in the program, declined to have his surname used and must live in an American-guarded compound to avoid reprisals. “I’ve seen detainees break down and cry when they realize that the conduct they thought was sanctioned by God is actually a sin.”
