POPSBaptists: Let Ellison swear on the Qur'an A strongly-worded editorial from the Baptist Studies Center on why Congressman-elect Ellison ought to be allowed to use the Qur'an for his swearing-in ceremony, and why religious freedom and disestablishmentarianism are historically key Baptist principles.

POPSRepublican presidential candidates back nuclear strike against Iran Blitzer: If it came down to a preemptive US strike against Iran’s nuclear facility, if necessary would you authorize as president the use of tactical nuclear weapons? Hunter, Giuliani, Gilmore, and Romney were the only ones directly asked the question, but five others—Senator John McCain, Senator Sam Brownback, Congressman Tom Tancredo, former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson, and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee—had ample opportunity to object or to distinguish their positions from this endorsement of mass murder. Only one candidate chose to do so, Congressman Ron Paul of Texas

POPSLove it - Giulliani sliding in Florida His biggest mistake was not realizing that the more people got to know him, the more they'd see what a phony he is. His best strategy would have been to be everywhere - make little appearances t talk about what a hero he is (at least he thinks so) and then get out of town.

POPSRomney's Feelings Hurt The taboo against having one's faith criticized should be examined and discarded. Honest and rational questioning of religious thought and policies should not be treated any differently than are other ideas that people hold. We question political views constantly. We question ideas about child care constantly. We question ideas concerning medical treatments constantly. Why not religion? Because it can't stand the heat. Members would drop out. People would open their eyes and see religion for the scam it is. There are other ways to view the world besides through the illusion of a belief in a mythical creator. So, IMHO, Romney is not entitled to any apology. Nor is any other religious person whose religious tenets are questioned.

POPSTheocracy? Is This Good for America? Click on the link and view the embedded video to gain an awareness of the total wackiness of these people. Make no mistake about it, these people are intent on making this a Christian Nation. And if your "brand" of Christianity doesn't conform with what they deem appropriate you're as much on the outside as any non-believer. Maybe those depicted in the video are not of the Fred Phelps ilk, they are much more of a danger because of their numbers and organizational influence in politics. You've been warned!

POPSGOP Candidates finally speak out against Ann Coulter Some of the GOP candidates finally speak out against Ann Coulter's hate speech but only after some main stream media, many blogs and several GLBT groups have already denounced her. I guess they were hoping we didn't notice their usual tactic of Fear, Lies, Hate and Prejudice.

POPSA Crisis Of Faith "The nation’s founders knew the answer to that question says nothing about a candidate’s fitness for office. It’s tragic to see it being asked at a time when Americans need a president who will tell the truth, lead with conviction and restore the nation’s moral standing, not one who happens to attend a particular church."

POPSRomney's "Religion" Romney's blatant rejection of the substantial number of non-believers in the country was deeply disturbing. His declaration equating religion and freedom was a slap in the face of the estimated 20-30 million non-believers that are US citizens. I'm gratified that this has attracted some attention in the media. Of concern is the blasé manner in which Romney put this idea forth. This was a prepared speech and I'm sure much thought went into it. If it was an ad lib moment he might duck under the cover of "misspeak" but in this instance he can't. Time will tell if this simply fades away or if it will come back to haunt him on election day.

POPSRepublican Plan To Kill Off Government
View the chart on the right, notice in the past 30 years, how the Repubs have been pushing us down into a deep financial hole. Why? I can only come up with the conclusion that the red side of the aisle is out to kill off government, as we know it, altogether. Allowing them free reign to privatize EVERYTHING in the world which will allow their dreams of a World Global Market, in which they become the rulers of, to come true. The damn pesky Dems keep getting elected in interims and bring the NAT'L DEBT down to a manageable size. Just imagine if they had ruled straight through this 30 year period, their fantasies of total control would be actualized by now. I know this is a simple analogy of what the hell they are up to but maybe that's how they get away with what they are doing. Just act as though their plans are SO COMPLICATED, too difficult for the average American cretin to understand. POPSRomney's: 5 Strapping Sons - None in Iraq! Hypocrisy More: Of more interest to his combat readiness, David was arrested in April of 2007 for trying to board a plane in Little Rock with a loaded Glock pistol in his carry on bag. So we know that the boy can shoot. Why isn't he on the front lines of the war his father so ardently supports in the name of Christ? (By the way, the reaction of Dad Huckabee to David's gun arrest is notable. "It's one of those stupid things," Mike Huckabee said. "He knows better." Ah, yes, nothing like a forgiving preacher. Do you feel safer now knowing that a gun toting animal abuser's father might be president? Clear the squirrels from the White House lawn now.) Huckabee says the war in Iraq is part of a "World War III' against Islamic fascism

POPSAtheists Don't Deserve Freedom And as Joan Walsh added: But I wasn't reassured, I was alarmed. Romney blasted "the new religion of secularism," referring to those who continue to argue for strict separation of church and state, which apparently, like certain of the Geneva Conventions under the Bush administration, is becoming "quaint." I sometimes find the anti-God stridency of Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens grating. Listening to Romney's speech I realized what a necessary corrective it is to corrosive political pandering. Calling secularism "religion" is a cheap shot worthy of Bill O'Reilly, not a major presidential candidate. I can't help hoping Romney's speech fails to soothe religious conservatives, because the sooner the Republican Party faces up to the destructive cost of its electoral dependence on religious extremists, the better off our country will be.

POPSDemocrat Obama Leads all Republicans for President More: Among Republicans, McCain performs the best among moderates in the general election match–ups, with Huckabee running a close second. Romney and Thompson run worst – in prospective contests against Obama, the Democrat leads Thompson 59% to 27%, and leads Romney by a 62% to 23% margin. Obama leads all five Republicans among moderates. Against Clinton, McCain and Huckabee lead among moderates, while the Democrat leads the other three Republicans. POPSEnter The Thought Police "The director of the ACLU's Washington legislative office, Caroline Fredrickson, said in a statement on the bill, "Law enforcement should focus on action, not thought. We need to worry about the people who are committing crimes rather than those who harbor beliefs that the government may consider to be extreme. Once a terrorist is defined by thought and word rather than deed, there will be room for all of us in the big tent."

POPSWrong on Taxes: Bush sells America to China Romney says McCain was wrong to vote against Bush's tax cuts. If he really believes this, then he is not a true conservative. What is the truth about Bush's tax cuts? Bush slashed the revenue of the US government to help rich people get richer. This means the government has less money to spend. But he is the greatest spendthrift in the history of American Presidents. So who is paying for all of Bush's spending? It isn't Romney, who is getting millions back in tax cuts. It's the Chinese, who are buying US Treasury bonds to gain power over the US. Look at the numbers. the Chinese have almost literally financed the Iraq war. A true conservative spends money when he has it, and when he doesn't, he works for more. Bush's extravagance has sold our economic independence to a rival nation. Does this sound like treason to you? Because it sure does to me!

POPSBush Hides Behind Condolezza's Skirt Huckabee said he consulted several foreign policy experts but wrote most of the article himself and took responsibility for its passages. "I certainly approved them," he said. Rice was asked about the criticism from Huckabee at a news conference. She did not mention Huckabee by name in her response and at first declined to weigh in, saying dismissively: "Look, I don't comment on other people's comments. I don't have time, all right. I really don't have time to worry about this." But she then launched into a vigorous defense of the administration's multilateral diplomatic efforts on Afghanistan, North Korea and Iran, and pointed to improving ties with traditional allies in Europe, some of which were strained by the Iraq war.
