POPSIrena Sendler Saved 2500 Jewish Children In Warsaw Ghetto On Oct. 20, 1943, the Gestapo arrested her and took her to Pawiak prison, where subversives were tortured and killed. Over three months, her detainers used clubs and other devices to fracture her legs and feet. She did not inform on Zegota leaders and was sentenced to death by firing squad, but a bribed guard helped her escape and marked her as having been executed. Mrs. Sendler remained incognito for the rest of the war -- she could not even risk attending her mother's funeral -- and continued to help Zegota. Yad Vashem, the Holocaust memorial in Israel, recognized Mrs. Sendler in 1965 as "Righteous Among the Nations," the designation for gentiles who aided Jews during the war. Al Qaeda has managed to pull together two fronts for twin campaigns orchestrated by a single commander, Fatah al-Islam’s Palestinian chief Shaker al-Abessi, from his new base in Iraq. Fatah al-Islam under Abessi’s command pinned the Lebanese army down at the northern Nahar al-Badr camp for four months in the summer of 2007 before being driven out. With his top command, Abessi was able to access Iraq from Syria in the last month by transiting a purportedly sealed border. But it came just hours after the car bombing in Damascus late Tuesday, in which eyewitnesses said a passerby was killed. The bomb destroyed the car that it was placed under, and damaged at least 10 others. Syrian security officials quickly towed away the wreckage of the destroyed car and sealed off the area. There was no reference to the bombing in the Syrian media on Wednesday. But an Iranian satellite channel, Press TV, said Wednesday that the person killed in the Syrian bombing was believed to be Mughniyeh.

POPSOlmert Rules Out Truce Talks With Hamas The Israeli military has struck hard in recent weeks against Hamas and other armed groups in Gaza. With troops appearing to make substantial gains, Olmert told his Cabinet there were no plans to slow down. "Operations against terrorists will continue as they have been conducted for many months," Olmert said. "There is no other way to describe what is happening in the Gaza Strip except as a true war between the Israeli army and terror groups." He said Israel would continue to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza to protect the area's civilians. Israel sealed its borders with Gaza immediately after Hamas violently wrested control of the territory in June. Israel, which considers Hamas a terrorist group, has cut off most trade and reduced fuel shipments to the area. Palestinians claim east Jerusalem and the West Bank, areas captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war, as part of their future state. Some 450,000 Israelis live in these areas.
