The NEJM study says weight gain is contagious...

    by missmartini  4-18-2008
Ok, I have to apologize for obsessing about my "fat pants" issue. I mean, I really have nothing else to obsess about so there you go. Anyway, Ambookgeek walked in to inform me that last night he too had to buy some new pants. Ok, then he told me about this study that was written about in the NYT and covered in NPR. WT??? Are you kidding me? Well, I guess, now, instead of talking responsibility for my own weight, I can just blame the people around me. I love how these things just make it easier and easier to blame my own problems on other people. (I am being sarcastic but the whole shucking personal responsibility for things is a whole other issue...) Happy Friday!

NYT op-ed piece on Obama's speech on race

I thought, this is a pretty good op-ed piece about Obama's speech on Tuesday. I thought he spoke about things that people are afraid to really acknowledge & discuss. As a society we tend to forget about the perspectives of others, because everyone is so caught up in their own experiences (of course). But maybe this will open up passionate and heated discussions on the American experience, which is varied & as diverse as the people who make up this country.

    Eric Heuvel's "The Search"

I want to order this graphic novel for our library. I think, that it will present the Holocaust in another medium that some students will find more accessible, similar to how they viewed the 9/11 report graphic novel. I am actually having trouble finding out where to order it so maybe someone out there can help with that. It is an interesting review in the NYT and also another interesting example of how the graphic novel is changing. Though, I do questions some things like the graphic novel version of Beowulf or the Odyssey but maybe it's not that much different from the abridged children's version of the Iliad or Alice In Wonderland. I am also fascinated by the fact that it is considered a textbook.

    Reading Is Dead

    by missmartini  2-22-2008
Not really but that's going to be my new shirt so I can be ironic. But here is a great op-ed piece by Tim Egan from the NYT about Steve Jobs and his ridiculous comment about how people do not read. Has he looked at "People Reading" blog or all the various book review blogs that people post, has he stepped into a library (school or public or university)? Well, from where I sit behind the reference desk, or on the metro or in a park...tons of people still read.

Product Placement, even in your kids books

It is the trend. It's annoying. But do the kids mind? Probably not. Nick Hornby's book is riddled with the names "Starbucks" and Tony Hawk's biography. Did it stop me from reading? No. Did it annoy the crap out of me like the way Pepsi is so prominently displayed in certain movies? YES! Here's a NYT article on the issue and 2 writers opinions. Interesting reading.

I am pretty excited about checking out the BCAM. There were stories in the LAT & NYT about it this week. I was really intrigued after reading Barbara Krueger's tour. Barbara Krueger is one of my most favorite artists and if she endorses a museum and exhibit well I am right there!

Caroline Kennedy's Op-Ed Piece in NYT

Caroline Kennedy wrote in favor of Barack Obama. She writes about why she supports him & it is an inspiring piece. Give me some food for thought.

I thought this was an interesting op-ed piece on Slate in response to Steinem's NYT piece on Clinton and gender

NYT & Mitt's Record - movement back to responsible reporting

I still feel there needs to be a movement in American Journalism towards more objective reporting. But this is interesting overview of NYT's reporting on Mitt Romney. But it's the same old news isn't it? No real information unless we choose to dig it up ourselves...
