POPSNow I know what Photobombing Is I was reading bits & bobbins & she posted a link to this post about photobombing. It cracked me up and also horrified me. And all these photos are from MySpace (WT?!?) right? right. Anyway, it is pretty funny and I too have been a victim of the photobomber. Watch out..there's a whole lotta boy butts. Why do boys always have to moon someone?

POPSFrom Tiffanybbrown: Huckabee, christiofacist The man frightens me. I do not understand him. I was raised Catholic and I still do not understand this way of thinking and the intolerance that surrounds and makes up that thinking. There is a disturbing quote that Tiffany posted and a link to a video. Watch and make up your own minds.

POPSThe meaning of the eyeglass push-up I pretty much do the Clark Kent way - method number 3. It's easy and efficient. I don't know, I also think it looks pretty nerdy but that's just me. I'm a nerd. I found this site using Stumbleupon and now I think I am hooked!

POPSDamn he's got a fabulous smile. I'm not even going to start talking politics and I'm not in the mood to read anyone else's opinion but you know, comment away. But Barack Obama has one of the best smiles ever.

POPSWhere are these troops going to come from? Yeah. Shocking - we don't have enough troops ; the troops in Fort Bragg live in a literal cess pool ; there is not enough health care (physical or mental) for the troops coming back ; enlistment is down (even though I've heard otherwise) - yes, there is a problem and we are already over-working the troops in Iraq & Afganistan and in turn, destroying families. I don't get it and this just pisses me off.

POPSMaking the most of your RSS Reader from RWW I really dig this short article from RRW. These are things I have thought about, like oversubscribing - is it good or bad? Should I use multiple readers or just stick to one. I have 2 accounts one on bloglines and one on google. But sometimes i feel so overwhelmed with all the subscriptions I have that I just sort of stop reading. These are helpful tips and since next year we will be introducing RSS into the curriculum this might be some helpful pointers for students as well.

POPSAll this killing to "save" the salmon I remember reading about how WA & OR have "approval" to kill sea lions but this is still shocking. I know that they have suspended fishing for salmon but is killing sea lions really going to help the population? Aren't there a lot of other factors as to why the salmon population is down? like over fishing by people? the lack of rain & snow in the mountains? the changing ocean temperatures? Not sure who shot them but it all seems a bit extreme to me. Though, I don't live in WA or OR so I'm not sure how big salmon fishing is for those communities...

POPSThe Cans Festival - check it out if you are in London I read about this a couple of days ago and thought I would look it up. How could would it be to witness this? My brother used to do a lot of graffiti art when he was younger and now is getting back into it. When I was in San Diego last, we went and checked out a park that is set aside for graffiti artists. It was pretty amazing some of the stuff out there. Better to have the kids hanging out there then getting arrested or getting into other kinds of trouble.

POPSThe fine line between our public & private lives online Here is another article about how public and private lives are no longer being separated on the web. I have discussions about this all the time with my friends and peers about the etiquette and propriety needed online, especially in a field where so many kids can find you if you are not careful. Our behavior online is so important now because, as I have recently experienced, it is so easy for my students to find me online. I have resorted to putting a lot of things "private" or "friends & family only" and am using a social networking blog site that has privacy options. I also wonder about when or if there will ever be a line between private and public life. It is disappearing. Insurance & employers are penalizing individuals who smoke AT HOME and employers are viewing individuals MySpace or Facebook pages. When does it stop? Will it? When is it viewed as encroaching on individuals rights or lives?

POPSA great story about reading and writing I have been reading a lot about writing. About how writing is changing, how it is becoming more collaborative, how the read/write web is changing how we read and how we write. Are we more aware of an audience? do we need to be? Does it transform how we interact with others? Does it change how we view ourselves? others? I just enjoyed how Keillor connects the two and how he mentions this need for intimacy in people's lives. It still amazes me how intimate I feel towards people across the internet than people next door to me.

POPSScholarship & the Read/Write Web During my undergraduate and graduate years, the libraries I used struggled with the ever increasing cost of scholarly peer-reviewed journals. Today, faculty in Harvard's arts & sciences department are going to vote on whether they want to publish their research on an open-access server maintained by the library. This is a great move. I know, I am completely biased. I love reading other people's research - a lot of librarians and educators - already use their blogs as a means of sharing their work and also working with others. I However, I do wonder about what types of issues with come up once this starts and people begin access it. There are issues of plagiarism, how it will effect existing journals, how it will effect those specific fields and I am just not sure if the detriment will out weigh the benefits.

POPSDaniel Pink interviews Thomas Friedman Yesterday, Alan November visited the school and held a workshop. He talked about global learning and how students need to be prepared for the future and need a world view. He discussed ways to incorporate web tools so that students can use these tools in a new context, not just a social one. At one point, he talked about Thomas Friedman's books and that triggered Daniel Pink in my head. Then Karl Fisch posted this link on his blog, The Fischbowl. I thought it would be a good one to share.

POPSEarth Day's Coming! Step One: Stop Junk Mail Today, we had a speaker come in to talk about global warming & ways to reduce your carbon imprint. Our students were pretty engaged and she mentioned that she cut down on the amount of junk mail she received by using 41pounds.org. If you use 41pounds.org you pay $41 and $15 goes to a non-profit of your choice. If you don't want to pay, Smart Money offers links to some marketing groups you can email or fill forms or call! Cool stuff!

POPSWe are all "infovores" Will Richardson tweeted this article so I thought I would share it. I know for one that I am like the example of the "cat & a laser pointer" when it comes to information. I keep searching, keep adding to my reader - even though I cannot keep up. I tried to dial back but it was impossible. I even deleted feeds that I no longer read but I just keep adding when something interesting comes up. Maybe this bombardment of information is why kids think they can multitask? Beats me but it makes me wonder.

POPSNonprofits in politics... I thought this was an interested breakdown of non-profits and how they are playing an increasing role in the primaries.

POPSGreat Tips on Teaching PPT We are in our ppt unit and we have been reworking it every year. Our team leader sent this article over and I thought I would share it. It's great! Hopefully, I will be able to convey this to my students. I'll keep you posted.

POPSNYT op-ed piece on Obama's speech on race I thought, this is a pretty good op-ed piece about Obama's speech on Tuesday. I thought he spoke about things that people are afraid to really acknowledge & discuss. As a society we tend to forget about the perspectives of others, because everyone is so caught up in their own experiences (of course). But maybe this will open up passionate and heated discussions on the American experience, which is varied & as diverse as the people who make up this country.
