POPSVolunteer and Travel! I'm in! I was looking at Happy News today and they featured an article on "Hands Up Holiday." Why not do both - volunteer at a worthwhile event and take a holiday. Seriously, this is one of the coolest things I've seen yet!

Sometimes you cannot get out of working or you are just lazy and they send it to you home. Yeah, imagine that! Anyway, I'm tired. It's May. The school year is winding down. POPSChecking out Powerset I am not sure how they programmed this search engine to search for meaning/context. I am just testing it out now but I will try to share my thoughts on it later. If anyone out there has tried it already, let me know what you think. I am a little wary of things that claim to search or figure out the "meaning" of a person's searches. How did they do that? How can you search context?

POPSFuel Frog App via RRW RRW posted a link to FuelFrog. You can track your gas mileage and you can even use twitter! How cool is that! A Camry fill up for under $60. I don't want to think about how much it's going to cost when I fill up my tank in a couple of day. Gah.

POPSNow I know what Photobombing Is I was reading bits & bobbins & she posted a link to this post about photobombing. It cracked me up and also horrified me. And all these photos are from MySpace (WT?!?) right? right. Anyway, it is pretty funny and I too have been a victim of the photobomber. Watch out..there's a whole lotta boy butts. Why do boys always have to moon someone?

POPSWhere are these troops going to come from? Yeah. Shocking - we don't have enough troops ; the troops in Fort Bragg live in a literal cess pool ; there is not enough health care (physical or mental) for the troops coming back ; enlistment is down (even though I've heard otherwise) - yes, there is a problem and we are already over-working the troops in Iraq & Afganistan and in turn, destroying families. I don't get it and this just pisses me off.

POPSHow the Wikipedia scanner works We have to teach kids how to properly use Wikipedia. Some teachers do not mind it's use while other's describe it as "the devil." I am slowly moving on the side where it is ok to use as a reference point but not as a source to cite. As one of our history teachers said, "You would not cite World Book, so why would you cite Wikipedia." Exactly! But I do think it is a pretty good resource. There have been tales of how people and companies are creating their own entries and this Wikipedia Scanner helps to assure that those individuals do not create their own biased entries. It's good to see that something is in place so hopefully Wikipedia does not turn into another marketing tool like MySpace and Facebook and Google.

POPSAll this killing to "save" the salmon I remember reading about how WA & OR have "approval" to kill sea lions but this is still shocking. I know that they have suspended fishing for salmon but is killing sea lions really going to help the population? Aren't there a lot of other factors as to why the salmon population is down? like over fishing by people? the lack of rain & snow in the mountains? the changing ocean temperatures? Not sure who shot them but it all seems a bit extreme to me. Though, I don't live in WA or OR so I'm not sure how big salmon fishing is for those communities...

POPSThe Cans Festival - check it out if you are in London I read about this a couple of days ago and thought I would look it up. How could would it be to witness this? My brother used to do a lot of graffiti art when he was younger and now is getting back into it. When I was in San Diego last, we went and checked out a park that is set aside for graffiti artists. It was pretty amazing some of the stuff out there. Better to have the kids hanging out there then getting arrested or getting into other kinds of trouble.
