POPSProduct Placement, even in your kids books It is the trend. It's annoying. But do the kids mind? Probably not. Nick Hornby's book is riddled with the names "Starbucks" and Tony Hawk's biography. Did it stop me from reading? No. Did it annoy the crap out of me like the way Pepsi is so prominently displayed in certain movies? YES! Here's a NYT article on the issue and 2 writers opinions. Interesting reading.

POPSDaniel Pink interviews Thomas Friedman Yesterday, Alan November visited the school and held a workshop. He talked about global learning and how students need to be prepared for the future and need a world view. He discussed ways to incorporate web tools so that students can use these tools in a new context, not just a social one. At one point, he talked about Thomas Friedman's books and that triggered Daniel Pink in my head. Then Karl Fisch posted this link on his blog, The Fischbowl. I thought it would be a good one to share.

POPSThe coming of the e-book. I thought this was an interesting piece on how the Kindle and e-books will have a surge and be good for the industry. Our library has a number of subscriptions to electronic reference books. The students appreciate the fact that these books are easily searched online and that they do not have to check out or photocopy the pages they need for their assignments. I am not sure if more people will prefer a Kindle over a book but I think it is amazing that you can have so many books with you all on one portable device and that you can download those books via wifi networks. I included a quote from Steve Jobs because he irritated me with that statement.

POPSPrint vs. Online Sources - editorial piece This is an interesting editorial on online sources (e.g. Wikipedia) versus print sources. As a librarian, I am slowly changing my mind about the validity of the information in Wikipedia. I do not agree with Magnus Linklater's idea that Wikipedia is the first and possibly only place to find information. I still feel that print sources are valid and that they should be a part of research. I do not know any thing about the UK's education system so I cannot comment on that. But I do know that education curriculum needs to change. Research, writing, peer-reviewing -- all of these things are changing with the "read/write" web and as an educator/instructor we need to prepare students for these changes.

POPSLibrary Use by the "Well-Wired" I thought this was an interesting study conducted by Pew. Though, I am wondering what they are referring to by "Library Use." Is it checking out books? Using the wi-fi? Using the databases? From my own experience at the public library, we do have a lot of users who utilize the wi-fi but a lot of users do not have internet access at home. I wonder who they surveyed...

POPS"People who tend to protest books don't read" I am a big fan of Rick Riordan's books and I started reading his blog. But with the upcoming release of the Golden Compass movie and reading a lot of list-serv and articles on how people should boycott the movie and also because of banned books week that passed a few months ago and because I'm a librarian, I thought Riordan summed it up nicely. Ten years after the fact & now people are boycotting it?
