POPSGhetto Fab or Ghetto Fad? Whatever floats your boat! We are ALL so interesting and unique in our own special ways. However, it seems in our "look-at-me" 'reality' society, some people are taking their interestingness to new obsessive-compulsive levels. Miss Jazz has been working on her nails for decades. The longest one is 24 inches. She cannot tie her own shoes, and lord only knows what else she is limited to in the name of fashion, style, and "celebrity"? (sarcasm intended, a little bit) She believes that her nails are a gift from God and a way to honor him.

POPSSex Tape Scandal: Indonesian Star Gets 3.5 Years in Prison He made two naughty tapes with his girlfriends. In the highly Muslim country they say he should be happy he didn't get the full 12 years in prison. In addition to breaking the "pornography law" passed in 2008 the major concern is"...the defendant should be aware that fans might imitate his behavior. I always enjoy the comment threads: Andrew547 said, “...though most are moderate, a small extremist fringe has become more vocal in recent years. They have pushed through controversial laws...And therein lies common ground between the US and Muslim countries. I love the irony." Just think of all the so called "stars" that would be in US prisons if our country were THAT radical. It would give new meaning to "Camp Cupcake".

POPSBalance: How to Stop Being a Victim of Your Own Life Excellent advice from the CEO of the Campbell Soup company. The only thing I disagree with in his 5 life objectives is, I say "put my own personal well-being" FIRST not last. If "I" cannot be well to the fullest, none of the other things will get done, period. For me, the part about "get up a little bit earlier" does not apply; but I get the point. Rather, stay up a little bit later suites my day-sleeping, night-working lifestyle. All in all a very good article...and the comment thread is equally as good.

POPSThe worst blogging mistake you can EVER make Exactly! I built my Public Relations Firm on the premise of "Positive ONLY PR" for my clients. However, in the past, I have found myself doing the very thing mentioned below: arguing on blogs...even my own blogs. But learn, I did. MORAL: Not every thought needs to be spoken; especially in haste, especially in public, whether you are right or wrong. This even applies to inside the family...maybe even more so.

POPSPoor Leadership + Mismanagement = Teamwork Fail: Saints vs Seahawks Example If you are into sports, this is a great article! I did NOT Amplify this article to gossip about football. The post makes some very valid life-business-common sense points. I love this paragraph: "Last year when a table leg broke, we took it to a carpenter to be fixed; this year, we just propped it up with whatever was handy, served Thanksgiving dinner on it and watched in horror as it wobbled around for awhile before finally collapsing." “Injuries are a crutch for teams whose healthy players can’t get it together.” It’s true. By proxy, the same concept applies to any team, company, business, or corporation: POOR LEADERSHIP + MISMANAGEMENT = TEAMWORK FAIL. If you have ever lived, loved, or visited New Orleans, you will truly appreciate the cynical, sarcastic, well written blog: HumidCity.com. Check it out. (The fact that it is co-written by one of my very dear friends has nothing to do with it...much *wink*).

POPSThe 10 Worst Foods of 2010 Noooo, not my McRib! *sniff* *sniff* I know it's unhealthy that's why I only have one about twice a year. But really, who sits around and thinks up this stuff, like putting mozzarella sticks into a sandwich? The Applebee's Provolone-Stuffed Meatballs with Fettuccine = >1,500 calories worth of cheesy goodness.

POPSMerry Christmas from Finland - pictures Both beautiful and interesting: In Finland, some do not use head-stone markers at graves. Rather, they simply go together to the burial area and light candles in memory of the loved one. This comes from the blog of an online friend of mine, Leena, who is a brilliant mathematician and puzzle enthusiast. If you like puzzles and mind activities, you'll enjoy her posts. She shares a lot about where she lives, her family, wonderful images from Finland, and the life experiences there.

POPS2010 Social Media Marketing Industry Report One this site is a 33 page PDF that easily loads. It has some very interesting stats. I enjoyed it. "By a long shot, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and blogs were the top four social media tools used by marketers, with Twitter leading the pack by only a hair. All of the other social media tools paled in comparison to these top four. It should be noted that in 2009, Facebook was in fourth place at 77% and blogs were in second place at 79%. It would appear that blogs, while still popular, are used less and Facebook is clearly growing. Owners of small businesses were more likely to use LinkedIn than employees working for a corporation. Another interesting finding was that men were significantly more likely to use YouTube or other video marketing than women (51.2% of all men compared to only 42.6% of women).

POPSElectronic Pickpocketing: The Newest Scam You have to go to the page to watch the news video; it's flash and would not allow Clipping. Apparently, anything you carry with an RFID number; credit cards, debit cards, even a Passport - can be swiped with something that looks like an iPad without even touching you. With your credit card number and expiration date, online purchases are made, sent to a foreclosed home address and *poof* you've been had. Since this clip is on a News website, they may archive the story later and break the link (sorry). It's worth watching now! Just be aware. I had never heard of this kind of scam before today.

POPSThe Most Beautiful Song: "God and Dog" "God and Dog" is the last song my beloved Mother-in-Law, Joyce LaFlamme, sent to me in an email just before she passed away two months ago. For years, Joyce sent me daily motivational emails, OR funny ones, like The "Maxine" Chronicles. I have probably Clipped & Amplify'd this one already. I am missing her very much today and just wanted to evoke her name and memory. She, like me, was a true animal lover. He two little dogs still look for her around the house. Somehow, when I listen to this song, it's like she is sending me a message. It's my reminder from her to be humble and loving person. I believe God & Dog is one of the most beautiful songs...ever made. So much wisdom is packed into this simple little song. I hope you enjoy it, too.

POPSHoliday Virus Warning from UPS & Snopes.com Be Aware: The fake holiday "UPS" virus is going around again. UPS may occasionally send you a message if you are a past customer, but they rarely, if ever, included attachments. Verified by Snopes.com, this virus started up in 2008 and is flying around again. Be careful.

POPSHow to Report Scammers, Spammers, & Phishermen I knew about the DO NOT CALL REGISTRY, however, I did not know there is an FCC: DO NOT EMAIL ME REGISTRY. I get so much spam it's ridiculous. Most of it is about how my "online percocet refills are ready" and "how to elongate" the penis that I do not have! (nor have I EVER ordered drugs online). Per the FCC website, they actually *cough* "care" and are keeping a data base of the reported scammers, phishers, and general bad peeps out there in cyberspace. The newest trend is key-logging to capture your holiday e-gifts before they reach your loved one. Imagine going to redeem Gramdma's $100.00 Bed, Bath, & Beyond e-card only to find out "you've" already spent it. Both the FCC and the FTC are interested in who is scamming us online these days. POPSTo Wed or Not To Wed
Broader definitions of "family" are now required to assess poverty levels in America. I find that interesting. We started out "a melting pot" and now we have become a "hodge-podge". I know a family right now who is united by: Mother & Some Dude, 3 daughters by a previous marriage and their 3 boyfriends; one of which happens to be "the baby-daddy" with another baby on the way. They are all under one roof and live off state assistance. That's boggling to me, as the oldest "child" in the home is 26 years old. I digress, the article goes on to insinuate if Americans are so disenchanted with marriage right now, then why are "we" so infatuated with the young Royals, "Will & Kate"? (I thought at first it was a pun of "Will & Grace" which actually would have served the article well). I remember getting to stay home from school and watch the Charles & Diana Royal Wedding. I still have her wedding scrapbook. It was romantic. All I can speak for is myself. I cherish my marriage.

POPSBaby Cord Blood Can Be Stored & Save Lives There's a cool video on the site that I could not capture. Cord blood can help people with leukemia's, it's totally private...something to know about. It increases the likely-hood that someone else can be saved.

POPSBotoxed Lips Couldn't Blow Breathalyzer Test I agree with the comment thread - if you have enough cash to go drinking while on vacation in Mexico - you can afford a taxi back to your resort - no excuse for drinking and driving - not even a doctor's note!

POPSInnocent Baby Picture Online Got Family Deported BE CAREFUL: How many times have YOU kissed your naked baby's tummy because it's just THE cutest thing in the world? Well...don't put that pic on Flickr, for sure. We live in digital world full of sickos who use your your baby pictures as porn.

POPSThrift Risk -- How to Avoid Bedbugs When Shopping Secondhand "Yard Sales" "Goodwill" and "Thrift Stores" used to be one of my favorite ways to find unique items for charity auctions. For example, we found this "vintage" old floor model Magnavox stereo, picked it up for 30 bucks. Took it home for a few days. Turned it over to make sure there were no spider webs, etc...it sold for over $500.00 for my charity benefit. Now...in the days of "hoarders" getting rid of their hordiness...it has to make you wonder what kind of critters can be hitch-hiking right into your home...even for a good cause. THEIR "cause" is to find another HOST. Something to think about.

POPSInternet Plagiarism Cops I remember the first time I deliberately plagiarized a paper for school. In the pre-Internet 5th grade I copied word for word out of the World Book Encyclopedia and turned it in as a report on Abraham Lincoln. I did not get caught and I have felt guilty ever since. Looking back (way back), I think the reason I copied the content instead of doing the creative work myself is because the subject was just flat out boring. I had Lincoln overload. "Teach me about something I don't already know...already," I thought. When I did it, I KNEW it was wrong. See, "back then" we had a larger sense of social conscience. Wrong was wrong, not "if you get caught it's wrong." My daughter is a full time college student. We spend many hours a week on the phone together "doing homework" and writing papers together. I listen and make suggestions and my daughter researches until her keyboard fingers are numb. When the paper is finished we run it through the "plagiarism checker" online.

POPS15 Things You Probably Do Not Know Well, I knew a few, but they are still fascinating. If you go to the source article, make sure you take the "blind eye test" and watch the YouTube about how rats can laugh. Really neat.

POPSElderly Drug Abuse on the Rise - Pot The article: Baby Boomers and Elderly Often Overlooked Substance Abusers cites the research below as the base for the discussion. I clipped the research link so I could get back to the graphs. It's quite shocking. Grandma and Grandpa are smoking as much pot as their grand-teens. "Just as teens are having problems with prescription drugs, baby boomers, and the elderly often suffer more for their use and abuse of these drugs. It is extremely important then for you to monitor any family member who is elderly. Gathering as much information as possible about drug abuse is your first step. It may be a cliché, but forewarned is forearmed." (It's 10 o'clock...do you know where your Granny is? All kidding aside, I can see why the older population would be even more susceptible to substance abuse. They have a lot more to deal with in this screwy economy than we do. Escapism exists at all levels).

POPSTalking Trash: Clean Up Our Oceans When I was a little girl, I so admired Jacques Cousteau. He embodied everything I love about exploring the earth, investigating the oceans, and saving sea creatures great and small. Now, his great legacy is continued through the work of his son, Jean-Michel, who has partnered with Project Kaisei to clean up our oceans and raise awareness about the severe increase in plastic pollution. What's really in our oceans? TRASH. Well, we already knew that. What you might not know it that even in this enlightened day and age of awareness...the global oceanic garbage disposal problem is growing leaps and bounds before our eyes. The pictures say it all. "We traveled thousands of miles on both vessels and we tested surface samples across that whole distance. Every single sample we came up with plastic, every single one."
