About me
I think of myself as a moderate democrat, although my democratic friends think I'm conservative and my republican friends think I'm liberal. Maybe that's why my blog is called A Plague on Both Your Houses. The quote is from Romeo and Juliet and is what Mercutio said as he was stabbed by Tybalt (a Capulet and Juliet's cousin) who in turn is attempting to stab Romeo (a Montague). Not only have I always had a soft spot for Mercutio, it seems that is what happens if you are in between the extremes.
Why I use Clipmarks
I like the conversation. It's an excuse to give my views and get others. I have always found it interesting and informative to see what others are reading and what catches their eye.

Hating Taxes for Anyone
oscarrob
by oscarrob  9-8-2010
Obama's populist rhetoric about taxing the "rich" is just that. People hate taxes not because they hate funding good programs or paying off the debt or social justice (whatever that means). They hate taxes because they get so little value for their money.

"Anchor" baby legislation is just wrong
oscarrob
by oscarrob  6-14-2010
I will say up front I am not opposed to Arizona's SB1070. It asks people if they are complying with the law. But this? This is just wrong. It is unconstitutional and it negates all of the principle on which we are founded. A person born in this country is a citizen. Pure and simple, no question, no denial, no controversy. Everyone born in this country, everyone. Chinese, Japanese, Italian, Mexican, Puerto Rican, Ethiopian, Irish. Everyone. Without exception. To try and make it hard for them to prove is evil, wrong, unconstitutional, and exhibits nothing but anger, resentment and meanness. It is a terrible idea. And it will not garner sympathy on the part of many who don't think 1070 was wrong. There may be much confusion and many flaws and gray areas in immigration laws. This isn't. Born here = citizen. No ifs ands or buts.

Nuff said. The problem is that $730 million is just over a weeks profit for the 4th largest company in the world. And that total spans several years. Basically unless the penalties are much stiffer, they don't care.

oscarrob
by oscarrob  6-11-2010    1
There is no special relationship with people who completely fail to understand the issue. How happy would they be if due to shoddy safety an American company dumped nuclear waste in The City? Would they say "Oh, it was just an accident, we see no reason their stock should go down." An entire way of life, billions in natural resources and an entire ecosystem could be destroyed by an avoidable accident and they wonder why we're pissed?

First its the McCain campaign. Now its Elizabeth Dole. How shameful and how shameless. These tactics are wrong, they degrade the so-called "conservative" movement. In this case they debase Christians and God fearing people generally. Kay Hagan is a Sunday School teacher. This kind of campaigning is disgusting. Do they not know how damaging this is to themselves and to the political process? How can they look themselves in the mirror? These people are destroying American values so much they might as well be terrorists themselves. Joe McCarthy is hootin an hollerin in his grave.

How has McCain been "tested?"
oscarrob
by oscarrob  10-26-2008    4
And so, the point is even more clear-cut than it might seem at first glance: Just because "John McCain sat in a cockpit on a flight deck during the tensest five days of the Cuban Missile Crisis, that doesn't mean he absorbed the slightest bit of wisdom about how to handle a crisis from the top." Just being a fighter pilot or a POW doesn't mean you are ready to be president. Nobody really is and this whole experience thing, on both sides, is an enormous red herring.

It is the most despicable, divisive and detestable kind of attempted smear. Forget that Obama, the campaign, FactCheck.org, and many media outlets have said that the relationship consisted of participation on the charitable

Forget the partisan bull. If ACORN is paying people based on either quotas or the number of registrations submitted, that is wrong, stupid and bad policy. And if they are on Obama's side, they aren't doing him any favors. Stop whining about partisan politics and being defensive, tell us how you operate and what you do.

Obama on Abortion

Instead of screaming at each other and calling each other murders, why can't we discuss where we can actually agree? What I like about Obama is that he doesn't just leave it with no common ground. There is common ground if you look for it and understand your opponent. If you refuse to understand you will only gain victory through destruction. That is where we are now. Each side generally is out to destroy the other on this issue. Obama understands that it isn't necessary and that even on the most divisive issue of our time, we can find something. Others refuse to even look.
