    (Historical Moment) for Cynthia McKinney
    papananook
    by papananook  8-23-2008
I really dig Cynthia McKinney and the way Obama has screwed up with his run to the right, she'll likely get my vote, win or lose. At least she blieves in the same things I do, especially about getting the military out of the worlds hair. Her interview oes on: This is the only party that even has social justice as its core principle. When we say ending the war, we mean all the wars. We need to get all the military out of every country, we need to begin to deal with issues of what peace can look like, how do you sustain that. Obviously, the green party is at the forefront of pushing the environment as a core value, that was innovative then. There should be an end to imprisoning young people, an immediate stop to the death penalty, a livable wage, not a minimum wage. Impeachment for George Bush and them is critical. I think if we don’t hold them accountable as a people, then anybody can do the same shit that they did.

    Pelosi confronted at book signing
    papananook
    by papananook  8-19-2008    11
Madam Speaker was so flustered by our efforts that she barely made a cogent remark for her whole "Know Your Power" talk. Our peaceful action had impact. The truth is a powerful tool. But if only our actions weren't necessary. If only, as Jodie Evans suggested, Madam Speaker would do her job! Saddest of all is the contrast of who Pelosi once was to who she his now. For a woman who was once at the cutting edge of social progressivism, Nancy Pelosi has lost her way. She has strayed from her former social consciousness into the malaise of power. A sorry state for a woman who 32 years ago was a pivotal player in the 1976 Presidential campaign of radically progressive California Governor, Jerry Brown.

Should Conyers Impeach or Write Another Book About Bush's Crimes?
    papananook
    by papananook  7-30-2008
Three years ago, Conyers' staffers on the Judiciary Committee produced a book about Bush and Cheney's impeachable offenses. Some of us helped them do it. After all, they were in the minority and couldn't do much more than write books. But now? In the majority? Now, should they be accepting that Congress no longer has subpoena power? Now, should they be accepting that Congress no longer has the power to legislate? Now, should they be accepting that Congress has no power of the purse? Now, should they be devoting tax dollars to the pointless vanity of doing what anyone else can do: writing yet another book on Bush and Cheney's latest impeachable offenses

WTF is she talking about? "He's not a leader. He has no judgment, he has no knowledge, he has no plan. I've been saying that for a year." Well, who the hell hasn't been saying that - and better - for longer? Did we elect you to say stuff? He had a plan and has seen it through. Can you say the same? "Here's the thing. This is how I see it as Nancy Pelosi, not in my role as Speaker... why I ran for leadership and the rest. I was not setting out to win for two years. I did not want there to be any doubt in anybody's mind that this is going to be a long standing, get used to it, strong Democratic majority." So the point of winning in 06 was to win in 08 and the point of winning in 08 was, etc...., but how does that answer the question you were asked above about shirking your duty to govern in between elections? "So, in my head '06 was first, and then in '08 we strengthen and increase, In 2010, there's a little ebbing--assuming we have a Democratic President--and tha

Impeachment Hearings: A Win Is a Win
    papananook
    by papananook  7-27-2008    2
I go for the second interpretation of events. It is clear, as was beautifully laid out in an article published by Glenn Greenwald in Salon magazine on July 15, that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and the rest of the Democratic Party leadership both in Congress and in the party organization, have been blocking any action on impeachment for fear of having their own complicity in Bush’s and Cheney’s crimes revealed. As Greenwald notes, the Washington Post has reported that Pelosi, along with Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) and Rep. Jane Harman (D-CA) were briefed on the administration’s use of torture and not only didn’t object, but actively encouraged it. Rockefeller and Harman, who at the time were minority leaders of the Senate and House Intelligence Committees at the time, were also briefed about Bush’s order to the National Security Agency to conduct warrantless spying on Americans. They didn’t object or publicly expose this blatant violation of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance A

IVAW has announced ‘Winter Soldier’ (March 13-16), a four-day event bringing together veterans from across the country to testify about their experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan <http://ivaw.org/wintersoldier>. “The ILWU action planned for May 1 is evidence that working people are impatient with vague promises to end these wars. Will Ms. Clinton or Mr. Obama endorse the ILWU protest and pledge to call home all US military personnel immediately?” “By calling the Iraq War a matter of military preparedness and botched strategy, Democrats are sidestepping the premise of the war,” said Bob Kinsey, Green candidate for the US Senate in Colorado <http://www.kinseyforsenate.org>. “While it’s true that

Aside from maintaining the sanctity of the Constitution—and holding accountable a criminal Administration—three immediate benefits will accrue: • Exposing and proving the truth will lift the veil of fear the Bush Administration has imposed. • The proven fraudulence of the war will mandate its immediate termination. • John McCain’s candidacy will be destroyed. No one has been a more enthusiastic champion for George Bush’s ”war on terror” than Senator McCain. When it is displayed as appalling deceit, Mr. McCain will be shown a willing accomplice—or a tragic fool—and wholly unfit to be president. But time is short, and the Democratic party is engaged in a civil war. With their demonstrated genius for losing elections, Mr. McCain might well stroll to the presidency. Unless he is proven to be unfit. Democrats, impeach. Or expect to be humiliated.

Choosing to Let Bush Continue Violating Laws

    by papananook  2-2-2008    2
Correcting power-abuse really has no meaning because power is what it's all about. They all abuse it. So what? It's just politics. We both agreed that according to what he was telling me, it boils down to the following: A sitting President is not subject to the law as long as he remains in office. He can CONTINUE to break laws as long as he remains in office. He can only be removed DURING his term of office (and therefore become subject to the law) through impeachment. Only Congress can impeach, and it's solely up to their DISCRETION. So, as long as Congress successfully blocks the impeachment process, they are willfully allowing the President to remain completely outside the law, condoning that principle, and, in effect, shielding him from being removed from office so that he will be subject to the law and can be prosecuted. Congress has no OBLIGATION to intervene. The aide seemed not the least bit disturbed by the gravity or import of my conclusions. It is, after all, just

DK not supporting another empty suit speaks volumes. I wish him the best fightin the good fight amongst the snakes in the HR... from rev. nick: If there is one thing that is obvious, it is that Dennis Kucinich was systematically removed from this election. The corporate media made sure that his voice would not be heard. The Democratic Party excluded him as well. This was not happenchance, this was intentional. Why? Because he represents the people, not corporations. He stands for what nearly every single one of us wants to see accomplished in this country: the restoration of the constitution, worker rights, universal health care. If the citizens actually voted for their own interests, Kucinich would be a true threat to those in power and it would be a major step in reclaiming our democracy. The battle to restore integrity to our republic is a big one. Kucinich is a David before an plutocratic Goliath, and yet the citizens of this country vote for the giant because it can win.
