The Pirate Bay to sue anti-piracy agencies?
    Silkweaver
    by Silkweaver  7-4-2008    1
The Pirate Bay showed that emails leaked from media defenders servers clearly showed that the company had launched illegal denial of service attack on the pirate bay’s servers, engaged in illegal hacking and repeatedly flooded them with spam. Funny ???

YouTube gives up user data in media lawsuit
    Kore7
    by Kore7  10-26-2006    2
Music company lawyers first warned and then sued individual users who downloaded their songs. Now it looks like piracy hunters for the movie studios are using the same technique against YouTube users. YouTube's decision to help Paramount track down Moukarbel stands in stark contrast to the philosophy of Google, which has fought the U.S. Justice Department over attempts to access data about consumers who use its search services.

House passes bill (HR 4279) that will let the RIAA take away your home for downloading music
    sahara
    by sahara  5-21-2008
If this bill is passed in its present form by the Senate and signed, that means there's no more pro forma RIAA lawsuit payoffs, because if you wind up settling with the RIAA, you could still lose all your stuff in addition to any fee you paid them. The more the law is constructed to sweep in folks who are absolutely observant of it, the more we need broader protections. The voting scorecard, http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2008/roll300.xml Only 11 Noes, to include Ron Paul. "It means they may take your home away if your KID is stealing music over the internet without even your knowledge. Cause it happened on property you had direct control over though you are clueless." Read the rest at the source, the comments are pretty good as well.

AT&T And Other ISPs May Be Getting Ready To Filter
    merrie
    by merrie  1-9-2008    3
Internet civil rights organizations oppose network-level filtering, arguing that it amounts to Big Brother monitoring of free speech, and that such filtering could block the use of material that may fall under fair-use legal provisions — uses like parody, which enrich our culture. “The volume of peer-to-peer traffic online, dominated by copyrighted materials, is overwhelming. That clearly should not be an acceptable, continuing status,” he said. “The question is how we collectively collaborate to address this.”

Piracy "The Golden Age" and Modern Day
    merrie
    by merrie  10-9-2007    2
Piracy peaked between 1690 and 1730 for several reasons. There were lots of ships to attack -- they carried slaves from Africa to the Americas and sugar, rum and other goods from the Americas to Europe. Additionally, the English and Dutch governments had used privateers during the War of the Spanish Succession. When this war ended in 1714, many privateers turned to piracy

Armed attacks on cargo ships, oil tankers and cruise ships are estimated to cost more than $1 billion a year, said Peter Chalk, a senior security analyst at Rand Corp. Piracy in Nigeria is leading to a drop in oil shipments because shipping companies are reluctant to risk ships, cargos and crew, he said, adding, “That has implications for U.S. strategic energy supplies.”

Shipwreck Likely Captained By William Kidd
    merrie
    by merrie  12-14-2007    2
The Dominican government has licensed the U.S. university to study the wreckage and convert the sea floor where the cannons and anchors are marooned into an underwater preserve, where it will be accessible to divers and snorkelers "When I first looked down and saw it, I couldn't believe everybody missed it for 300 years," said Charles Beeker, a scuba-diving archaeologist who teaches at Indiana University. "I've been on thousands of wrecks and this is one of the first where it's been untouched by looters." The find will likely reveal key information about piracy in the Caribbean and about the elusive Captain Kidd, according to John Foster, California's state underwater archaeologist, who will participate in the research. Captain William Kidd (c. 1645-1701) was one of the most notorious pirates in history. He sailed the coast of North America, the Caribbean, and the Indian Ocean, plundering ships. To this day, rumors persist that he left behind a great treasure.

Canadians soon to pay taxes on legal music downloads
    TheCatWhisperer
    by TheCatWhisperer  10-22-2007    3
Yes.. so let's punish the people who are legally downloading our content.. that'll make them want to continue to do so... You know what? Forget it. I'm going back to pirating my music. I've been paying for Napster pretty much since it was avaialbe in Canada as a legal service. And yes, the tax would only amount to a few cents a month, but that's not the point. Your punishing me, your loyal client. And that excuse about Oh, i may make a copy fo rmy {device anme}. Is BS. I PAY EXTRA ALREADY to legally copy these tunes to my mp3 players..($15/moth for the to-go service as opposed to $10/month). FUCK YOU RECORDING INDUSTRY! You won't get another cent from me until you smarten the fuck up. And I thought will all the big labels starting to switch to DRM-Free, that you might have gotten a clue... The funny thing is that apparently CRIA (our version of RIAA) may have been in opposition to this tax...

U.S. Navy going Soft - It's About Time
    BobbyRutan
    by BobbyRutan  12-28-2007    3
More: Such nonmilitary approaches are fundamental to addressing the nation's security problems, says Defense Secretary Robert Gates. In what many in and outside the Pentagon believe was a seminal speech at Kansas State University last month, Secretary Gates argued for dramatically more funding for nondefense agencies such as the State Department and the US Agency for International Development. " ased on my experience serving seven presidents as a former director of CIA and now as Secretary of Defense, I am here to make the case for strengthening our capacity to use 'soft' power and for better integrating it with 'hard' power," Gates said. Me: "I must be dreaming".
