POPSMilky Way double haloes spin both ways Perhaps remains of a gas clouds from which the Milky Way formed, it suggests the creation of the Milky way resulted from the turbulence of two primeval galaxies, spinning in opposite directions, which collided and were held together by mutual attraction

POPSAustralian Ant Safari Entomologists say Australia has the highest ant biodiversity in the world. In other countries, there may be 30 different species per hectare, in Australia there are more like 100. The text in the clip continues below the pictures. At the site there are details of how ants play an important part in the environment.

POPSWhiff of ancient oxygen turns back clock Oxygen was toxic to early life forms. The 'Great Oxidation Event' changed the environment so these organisms could not survive apart from some places where oxygen is excluded, like deep sea vents. This event gave the opportunity for a new strand of life to develop of which we are a part.

POPSFossil Reef found in Aussie outback So now they think Animal life evolved 80 million years earlier than we had calculated. clearly 'Scientific' discoveries are too often base with too little evidence. one of the Basic Principles of "science' is the development of a method and a control where a method can be repeated in an attempt to get similar or 'Identical'- through the imposition of specific qualifications. this can be difficult when most natural situations are unique, or 'one offs' There's generally no harm in 'looking', we just have to be careful the way we describe what we find

POPSThe secret life of water rats. It has been discovered they can eat Cane toads safely, and seem to be immune to it's poison, but they do not have the numbers to dent the huge cane toad population. They also eat the crayfish that burrow into dam walls and weaken them, helping farmers.

POPSWave action could eat more coast The studies are of the Australian coasts, but there are no doubt effects that will be felt all over the world. Apart from the compound effect of the erosion, with sea level rise, it could be an escalation of the global warming problem, but the big question will remain. How can we pretend our computer models are accurate because of the limited amount of information we put in them. There are too many things we "Don't think of" The computers are being fed volumes of information but the lack of certain effects can still make predictions a waste of time. The weather is changing dramatically, but you don't have to be a weather man to know that. We are still as good at predicting weather as we have ever been

POPSEvil Mad Scientist Laboratories I linked to this site, after I found out how to make a bristle-bot, using a toothbrush, and the motor that gives you a ring in a cell phone. - Before I throw my cell phones out in future, I'll have to remove the motor. POPSTime to rejoin space race, say scientists Australia is gong to send a rocket to the Sun, and two satellites to monitor climate change. If you're going to join a race, it helps if there is no one else in the race. Everyone else seems to be aiming for the Moon or Mars.l

POPSBeautiful Beetles. No, not VWs. The beetles listed are generally found in Australia, some native, and some introduced. They are the most abundant of all insects, and play a valuable part in the breakdown of organic matter in the soil, and soil aeration. The varieties extend across the world, being active in the summer, and breeding and dying as the weather cools. The last picture of the Green beetle unlabeled is an example of a Stink beetle, which is a Ground beetle, or carab.

POPSArthritic cane toads hobbling across Australia We say it's an invasion, but they were introduced in 1935, to eat the cane beetle, and ate everything else, and kill anything that eats them apart from a few species. We just didn't find out enough about their eating habits, until it was too late. They have since spread south and west and cover a large area of Australia's North East

POPSStudy puts urine in the spotlight A light that can show signs of urinary tract infections These infections are easily treated, but first must be detected. This light can be part of an instant or even home analysis kit without the need to wait 24hours (usually in a queue) and two visits to the doctor or hospital. Of course if they are expensive, they can become part of the 'Neighborhood Watch' program, but how much can it cost to switch on a light globe? Every chemical has a unique signature. It is also hoped this technique can be used to detect other diseases , such as cancer, each of which have flags in the urine, due to the kidneys ability, and tendency to eliminate toxins from the system.
