About me
Robert is a consultant, author, and President of THE BOTTOM LINE GROUP, a Dallas, Texas based management-consulting firm. Robert has spent 25 plus years working with both Fortune 500 and Government organizations to help them strengthen operations, increase productivity, and provide customer-perceived value. Throughout his career, he has focused exclusively on understanding and improving knowledge-intensive work in service, professional, administrative, and “non-manufacturing” processes. He’s designed and facilitated hundreds of hours of classroom learning and also provides coaching and guidance in process improvement, process management, and change management to individuals at all organization levels. During the last 10 years especially, Robert has been helping leaders within Client organizations plan, implement, and measure the results of their major organization change and improvement initiatives.
Many of you may know Robert from his current ASQ Lean Enterprise Division leadership role, as Chair of the Lean body of knowledge and certification committee, or as the author of The Basics of Process Mapping. Read more at my blog. See Where to Find Me on the Web below.
Why I use Clipmarks
Mostly because its "too cool for school."
I spend a lot of time reading and researching the web. In theory, because I'm an author and working on my next book. It's great to be able to easily grab something and save it for posterity with just a click or so.

Learning to See
rwdamelio
by rwdamelio  11-19-2009
A well-named book. One of the key ideas is that we must learn to recognize waste, and make it visible in the context of a value stream so that we can measure it's impact on business results. This is more of a workbook than a text book. Unlike the others, this book focuses on a single tool, which the author refers to as a value stream map (vsm). I'm told that Toyota refers to this as a "material and information flow diagram." This turns out to be a good description of two of the key features of this "map." I think of this as a model that highlights a specific set of resources, along with the flow and waste associated with those resources.

More to come it's getting late. Of the 4 books at the bronze level, this one has more on the "Jidoka" concept and "poka-yoke" systems, and Hoshin Planning than the others. It also explains 3 types of "pull" systems, and 6 kanban rules. Learning to See has some material on pull systems as well

Gemba Kaizen (Easy for you to say!)
rwdamelio
by rwdamelio  11-19-2009
Loosely translated (I'm from Texas after all) Gemba Kaizen means continuous improvement of the workplace, i.e. "the place where the products or services are formed." This book introduces "major kaizen concepts and ""major kaizen systems." Kaizen concepts: Kaizen and management Process versus result Following the PDCA/SDCA Putting quality first Speaking with data Treating the next process as the customer Kaizen systems: Total Quality Control (TQM) Just-in-time production system (JIT) Total productive maintenance(TPM) Policy deployment (Hoshin Planning) Suggestion system Small-group activities (teams) A key feature of this book is the Glossary in the front of the book. You may also find it helpful to compare and contrast the treatment of Kaizen systems and concepts in this book with those shown in Lean Production Simplified. Both books present their information in the context of manufacturing work. Other books in the library address this gap.

Why Create a Learning Culture?

This is why Toyota wants a Thinking Organization, and uses the PDCA problem solving/ structured learning approach to grow everyone's skills. what they should be doing = twi,(job instruction) standard work how they can do it better = pdca how they will know they have achieved desired results = built in feedback (quality at the source) reflection = hansei knowledge-sharing = yokoten part of the way they function on a day to day basis = standard work, daily work

Boy I wish I knew about the "Sentinel Effect" sooner - when I looked like a jack-ass in front of my peers. I'm not sure how an after the fact (once consumption occurred, it was reported). I need one that sets of a buzzer before I look like a jack-ass!
