POPSWhen Plague Strikes: Flee i was going to write 'Flea!' i find it fascinating that the first impulse when your town is quarantined is to LEAVE the area. so human, so flawed. Get on a plane and go as far away as possible! Use an assumed named like 'Yersinia Pestis'

POPSDetails This is just a pointer to a clarification of a remark I made in my blog post on Interrelated.blogspot.com. I was being my cynical, sarcastic self, but this purports to be the White House position. Maybe the White House is afraid that Chinese torture will prove to be more effective than US torture. The truth is, in the torture biz everybody borrows from everyone else.

POPSThe Ironic Rule of Law Did they copy this from a US Justice Department press release? First they pirate our DVDs and now our legalistic dissembling! Pioneering torture policy authors like John Yoo are apt to be pretty steamed.

POPSOlympics Opening Fireworks Faked It should have been obvious what the Chinese were looking for in an opening when they hired Steven Spielberg. After he bailed over Darfur (did he ever intend to follow through with the gig in the first place?) the producers stuck with their script and made the best show they could. So if some CGI shots and some lip-syncing found their way into the spectacle why is anyone surprised? Don't get mad about the cute girl who can't really sing. Get mad about the the 12-year old gymnasts. The latter have a strict code to follow that is set out by the IOC. The former is just show-biz.

POPSSelf-deception in Manhattan this is a fragment of a funny article from the nytimes that appeared around the same time i moved from manhattan to suburbia. i clipped it because i am writing a piece about my transition and what part of myself may have been left behind.

POPSContradictory Studies here is the problem with publicizing small-sample studies that are inconclusive: next week there will be one that draws the opposite conclusion. What happens if you see one but not the other?

POPSThe Invisible Hand i always remember it as the "unseen hand" and i am always mistaken. unseen hand is so much more mellifluous than invisible hand. more mysterious too.
