POPSMy Amigo, Mr. T, Going live in Downtown Lakeland I've known Tim for a couple of years now. He is a rare type of person who always makes me laugh, and brings levity to conversation even when it's a heavy topic. And I love it! Why? Because we are in desperate of seeing things in a lighter frame of mind. He never steps away from intense, and controversial, ideas ... but he's not afraid to take a light-hearted view of the situation. I can't wait to see him play live again. Catch you soon as Circle of Two. Al

But this article puts a completely new spin on what cutting coupons is really worth to a family. This one is definitely worth a read. Al

POPSCoupon Cutters Make the Newspaper. Many of you have been following our recent grocery store savings escapades. Well, I wanted to post this great article from the newspaper this weekend. It's not about us ... so if you're getting sick of hearing out successes, you can pick up on someone else. It's a great article, definitely worth checking out. Definitely look at the 'Getting Started' section on the right side of the page when you get there.

POPSMore Coupon Goodness We've been talking about coupons a lot lately. Mostly that's because it has helped S T R E T C H our budget WAY farther than we ever thought possible. Check out this post to see some specifics of our recent savings.

POPSA Mountain of Public Domain Content from the Government I had heard that President Obama wanted transparency in his administration towards the American people, but I had never heard HOW he was going to achieve that. Although there are lots of closed door meetings in politics, this is one area where we (the America public) will see some benefits in the availability of Public Domain material. Definitely take a look at this article if you are looking to supplement your online content with Public Domain content from the government. It's worth a minute or two of your time.

POPSGrocery Store Rebates - Our Story My wife has been going crazy with the whole grocery store coupon idea lately. To be honest, at first, I didn't think it was going to be that great of a thing for us. But the way she is saving us so much money right now on groceries is just astonishing! In this post she talks about another way she helping stretch our budget even farther ... grocery store rebates. This is just a brief recap, but if you look at the post, you can get a good idea of how she's working the deals. Hope you like! Al

POPSIs This Bike Coming or Going? This story, about an odd cycling couple is pretty. And even more interesting is this customer built bike they ride around on. When you read the notes you'll understand why the rider in the back doesn't mind being in the back. I also like the discussion about the solar panel that also acts as a roof shade on hot days. Talk about multi-tasking. It's a pretty cool story, worth the read.

POPSA Stunt Cyclist Takes the Stage Although this is apparently one of the most watched sports videos on Youtube, I hadn't seen it until tonight when I read this article. Most of us will never be able to do the stunts and tricks this guy can do ... but hopefully he can still inspire us to try and do great things. And most importantly ... the video has over 50,000 votes and it's still rated 5 stars. He can do some pretty cool stuff with a bike. Enjoy!

POPSMore on the Cargo Bike Redo I just posted about this bike a couple minutes ago, and then I found this article with more pictures ... so I HAD to post these up. I'll keep it short and sweet.

POPSGrocery Bike Redo I was talking about bikes that you can use to gather up grocery supplies when you go shopping. And then I saw this new bike concept ... designed to let you carry stuff on the front end. It's a pretty cool idea. It has what looks like a skate board deck mounted on the front frame of the bike. Apparently wide enough to hold a bag of groceries.

POPSHere's a Cutting Edge Electric Bike Here's another example of the direction that electric bicycles are going. This one is a space aged example of the future. It reminds me of something you might see from an old Star Wars show, or something like that. I thought it was intriguing. I hope you like it.

POPSBike Race Update - Lakeland, Florida I talked about it ... and I actually did it. I made it to the Lake to Lake bike race in Lakeland today. And here are some pics from the pre-race and the start of the race. I just thought I'd share it with you. This was definitely a cool event, and it was something I would love to check out more of in the future.

POPSLakeland Mountain / Road Bike Race Tomorrow You know I love biking. And I heard about this race over a month ago. Finally, this morning I remembered to look up the information on the race. Thankfully I didn't miss it ... but it's happening tomorrow. I won't be racing, but I think I'll try and stop by the race to check out what it's like, maybe snag some video and pictures. Anyhow, that's cool. What's even cooler than that news is this sponsor for the event. Rather than explain it - I'll just show you the logo. For some reason, the image isn't coming up for me - so here it is if you want to check it out. http://SpeerClan.amplify.com/files/2009/08/as_creme_logo.jpg Pretty cool, right?

POPSPhoto Tips for Kids Now that cameras are starting to be available (in price) to average families, and their children. We were thrilled to pick up a camera for our oldest daughter this last Christmas. So, when I stumbled onto this article the other day ... offering tips of advice for kids ... I had to share some of the ideas with you.

POPSSome Brighter Bike Ideas ... Good Safety Tips? Here were a couple of bike reflector and light ideas I thought were pretty unique. #1 Have you ever used this reflective type of tape on your bike? Does it work for you? Do you think it helps being seen when you're on the road? #2 How about this throw back from the 90's - neon lights on your bike. I remember my boy Jason, hooking up this idea. This was SO COOL back in the day. How exciting to think about adding this onto our bikes today. That would be neat. To have a bike that was cooler than the cars on the road ... priceless. Or even to look like you have light-sabers attached to you bike.

POPSFixed Gear Bikes ... Really? Well, I must admit that I haven't really ridden a fixed gear bike since my BMX days as a teenager. And, truth be told, I can see the potential of having this type of set-up in a flat-landers state like Florida. However, there is NO WAY I would be caught dead with a fixed gear bike in any location that has a single bit of terrain. I would be toast. And any rider who tells you different is full of it ... in my not-so-humble opinion. Never-the-less this bike is pretty sweet looking, and I love the design. I especially like the blue rubbers. What do you think ... fixie or geared?

POPSBike / Scooter First Time View in the U.S. I came out with a similar idea about 2 months ago - although mine will most likely see the light of day. But I thought this was cool enough to share with you, especially since this is the first time I've seen it mentioned in U.S. circles. It's a hybrid mix of bicycle and kick scooter. It looks cool, and strikes me as a throw back to some of the late 1800, early 1900 cycling ideas that were floating around back then. However this design gets the benefit of today's technologies to help it along.

POPSPythons Running Wild in Florida Here is one of Christy's absolute favorite creatures ... Not Really! However, this was so amazing I had to share it. In fact, although Christy can spend hours and hours in the blood, guts, and gore of other animals - she can't even stand the sight of snakes. It's wierd - I know. This is a pretty amazing tale right out of the rough and rugged Florida Swamplands. Also, notice the part about these snakes 'DON'T' have any natural predators here. And people thought the wild hogs were getting bad? These could be next.

POPSA Couple of Travel Photo Tips to Keep in Mind When you travel, you always want to have your camera handy ... ready for the next good shot. You don't want to miss one single valuable image while on your trip, if you can help it. So, here's a couple of good tips to keep in mind when snagging photos while you're traveling to new and exotic locations.
1
POPSImages of Abandoned Cities I've always had a fascination with ghost towns of the Old West. There's a rustic, old-world charm about the history they hold. But, there are similar forces at work today. It's hard to see sometimes, because it seems like there are so many people ... everywhere you turn. But it is happening in some places. What's really interesting is seeing images of what these places look like now that they are being discarded. And, even wilder is that some of these will be destroyed to make way for new, more modern improvements. Check out the city in China, for example, just the character of the buildings speak of history. And yet ... they will be gone soon to welcome advancement. But will anyone want to come back? And what makes them come back?

POPSThe NEW Official Bike of Surfers I'm no surfer ... but this bike makes me want to go out and pick up a surf board, just so I can ride it. It has a great, laid back cruiser look. Love the idea!

POPSAfter the Bomb in Hiroshima - Photos I can't say a whole lot more than ... WOW! This is a pretty heavy topic, but these pictures say a tremendous amount about the destruction that occurred in World War II. Mostly, I just thought you'd be interested in the photos, if you haven't seen them yet. There's nothing gory, just destruction of buildings, homes, etc. But it's clear to see what it meant for anyone who was living there. The article has some good information in it as well.

POPSAnd I thought Portland was a Biking town ... But this ... this is clearly what I would call a bicyclers Capitol. I've never been to Amsterdam, although I've met several people from there, and even a missionary who went there to try and help the younger generation connect with their spiritual lives. But, I have ALWAYS been impressed with the biking culture they have there. This post, and these pictures goes a long way in describing it. Mostly, I just loved the pics, and thought you might like to see what a LOT of bikes looks like.

POPSHigh-Tech Bicycle of the Future I am an avid cyclist. And I love to ride as often as I can. However, I really can't afford anything like this. We visited the bike store the other day, and the $1000 + prices just about made me fall over. So, I can imagine this one is going to cost a few bucks. But, I think it is an absolutely cool looking bike. And a great concept all the way around. I would love to see it on the road. For me, it would be like seeing a Ferrari drive by.

POPSSwim Faster than Phelps with this Sweet Dolphin / Whale Fin I have always had a fascination with scuba diving and snorkeling. And, more recently, our 10 year old has shown some interest in masks, fins, and snorkels. And her swimming skills right now, are getting pretty close to mine already. She definitely likes being out in the water and checking things out. But, not too long ago, we saw an AMAZING new invention that can allow you to swim as fast (or faster) than Michael Phelps. And that caught our attention. Not to mention - it is a freaking cool idea. I FINALLY found it last night when scouring the web. And I had to share it with you. Happy trails!

POPSBicycle for Grocery Shoppers This is an intersting bike make-over. Christy and I have wondered about getting groceries on bikes ... is it really feasible. Our best strategy so far has been to use panniers and other bike bags. However, you can't do much grocery shopping with a system like ours. This strategy converts the bike into a little bit more utilitarian design, by building on more carrying capacity. It's a pretty cool idea.

POPSC3PO Image Projection Comes to Life on a Camera Do you remember how C3PO projected the video of Princess Leia to Luke Skywalker in Star Wars? That was one of the coolest technologies I had ever seen as a kid. And I've been waiting 30 years to see it come to fruition in real life. And now, Nikon, has finally done it. Don't believe me? Check it out!

POPSSome Advice on Biking to Work These are some pretty good comments about commuters and biking to work. I would agree with most of these. I would also hope you are able to have a shower at work once you get there. OR, at least give yourself about 15 minutes to sit and cool off before you start your shift. And Christy has suggested have some alcohol wipes to clean your body. The alcohol acts as a coolant as it evaporates on your skin, and the wipes will help you clean up - in case you get a bit 'ripe' from the ride. This article is definitely a good read.

POPSFlying Ninja Squirrel Love this clip. Obviously the squirrels aren't putting up with any Bull from outsider, so they sent in the ninja squirrel to take care of the problem.

POPSGlow in the Dark Bike About the only thing I could say about this bike, when I saw it was ... WOW! What a great concept. You can see it in the dark - which is outstanding for riders who often find themselves on the roads before sunrise, or after dark. But the bike also looks outstanding, even with the great safety features. Nice!

POPSFamily Bike Tours - See the World, and Stay close to your Family Since my very youngest days I've always wanted to bike across America. And, after our 40 day cross country camping trip - I want to bike the U.S. now more than ever. This is a great story about a family who has done it in their state. But, who knows, maybe soon they'll venture across the entire country. Let me know if you plan on taking any trips like this - I'd love to follow along and live vicariously through you experiences.

POPSPhotography and Biking ... a Potent Combination Here's a new profession I may have to look into ... mashing up biking with photography. Action, cool pics, and an excellent sport all spun together into a great opportunity. Take a look at this 'insider's' perspective on doing a live action mountain biking cover shoot. Very cool!

POPSFind Your Friends Facebook Locations with this ... I'm not sure exactly how I feel about this app. But, I'm sure there will be a few people out there who really like the idea. And, truth be told, it would have been awesome to have locations of our friends and family as we traveled cross country. Anyhow - it maps out your friend's locations as listed in Facebook Facebook. So, now all your old buddies, who you're friends with but don't really know why, can figure out how to find you and come bug you and your family.

POPSGoogle Mapping where No Car can go Taking the Google map concept from street view - to trail view. Google has ingeniously come up with the idea of mapping trails and other places where cars can't go - with bikes and pedestrian versions of their camera system. Where can I sign up to ride a bike for them?
