POPSGreen light for internet filter plans Most teens know about sites which will relay access to the banned sites. They use them at school to overcome the limitations placed by teachers. The firefox addon, "Web of Trust" should work for accidental visits by kids. Watching what the kids are using is difficult. Not many parents are not surprised by their children's antics at some stage. The govt thinks it has to be seen making an effort.

POPSA Giant Virus Discovery Trumps SciFi Some viruses become so large that other viruses can infect them, tiny super-specialized parasites piggy-backing their genetic code on their huge cousins. Others simply fail, their patchwork genomes not up to the challenges of the environment. The Marseillevirus has stolen ten percent of its chromosomes from bacteria it once infected, and anther five percent from the amoebic host of the party. It's even infiltrated other giant viruses, taking parts of the mimivirus for its own purposes. Don't worry about any mass-media scare stories: this thing is no threat to us and there isn't a shred of evidence to suggest otherwise. Not that the latter necessarily affects the former.

POPSDNA bungle shows 'lessons not learnt' TV probably convinced most that DNA was the panacea, but allowance for human error has to come in somewhere, so it should be able to be questioned. (I doubt it has much to do with the rich, who seem to be sloppy with their DNA.)

POPSAfghan army 'in need of US funds' All govts suffer corruption to some extent, so Afghanistan is the same as all of us. What gives Obama the right to ignore what happens in his country, while preaching to others, can only be hypocrisy. Maybe it is a codename for the drugs and Karzai has to deliver them all to the invaders.

POPSSmokers value looks over life Can't bring themselves to ban it because of job loss mainly, I suppose. Smokers I know are more likely to joke about death, whatever they think deep down.

POPSGiant iceberg headed for WA Western Australia is just about out of drinking water. Could be handy if the scientists can work on getting it ashore. We used to joke about dragging icebergs to Australia during droughts. Seems nature is giving it a go. There was an iceberg party being organised for one of these icebergs, but it melted.

POPSThe ugly side of climate politics Why cannot people have a sane discussion about the facts as known? The move to hate shows an inability to understand what is happening. This energy could be used for the benefit of the planet. That would benefit humans.

POPSSwine flu less severe than feared Millions of dollars later they are still trying to get rid of the "shots". Add them to an alcohol base and sell it as a drink. "Anti-flu beer", the craze that could sweep round the world like a plague.
