    Gamers show Aspbergers traits
    pokkets
    by pokkets  4-23-2008    1
They are not suggesting that aspbergers syndrome is caused by gameplay, but the similar symptoms may give researchers new insight into the mechanism of autism. No doubt the brain of a game player is having particular specific sections of the brain reinforced by the game play, leaving other areas to atrophy. The biggest difference may be, that the thoughts of an aspberger's syndrome sufferer can be a complete mystery. If you want to know what a gamer is thinking, you just have to watch them play the game.

    Thinking the way animals do
    pokkets
    by pokkets  12-25-2007    9
Temple Grandin Ph.D. is an assistant professor of animal behaviour at Colorado State Uni. She suffers from a form of autism, and describes the way she thinks as thinking in pictures. This has helped her understand the way Animals think, with direct association, rather than a logical process. A significant statement which can apply to most people, is the fact that originally as far as she was aware everybody thought the same way. Until she asked people and found this was not the case. She describes a radio station person who said she had no pictures, in her mind, but thought in terms of emotions or words. I'm sure I can understand my dogs. They seem to think in a manner that is simple, and straightforward, it can just be a matter of associating cues with behavior, and remembering Pavlov. I think in Pictures and sounds. There is music I can 'hear' in my mind that not only has the same 'quality' as the original, but there is a remarkable capacity to edit. Perhaps something like Auti

Except for the fact that the house was afire, this could be funny. It appears that the parents had there own problems which may have contributed to the children's. The 3-year old was a quick learner of some bad behavior. I don't envy people who have children and then lack the resolve and self-discipline to train and teach them. My advice has always been, set the boundaries and rules when they're toddlers, cause you can't start training them as teens. If they're out of control at 3, imagine what they will be at 13!

    Food additives linked to hyperactivity
    pokkets
    by pokkets  9-5-2007    3
Something I know it's a lot of parents can tell you already, but it's something the manufacturers have been able to deny through lack of evidence. It's expensive to change. As the effects of these additives are investigated, there will be more reason find safer substitutes. I'm sure it can't be too hard. The preservative is the additive that is actually useful. There was a placebo, and two drinks with different amounts of colouring. They are the to drinks that both have the preservative. So lose the colours and find a new preservative ? Surely with the amount that is spent on candy it would be worthwhile. How much research funding is required to sell candy to kids ? (Excluding Advertising.)

I'm surprised this even reached the foreign news media because it is not an uncommon practice in parts of South Africa, and has been for centuries.

    Male teachers help boys "behave"
    thekay
    by thekay  8-5-2007    3
First thought, "well duh!" Second thought: I think the way the teacher teaches is the bigger factor- if you are able to connect and adapt better to the students' learning style, you will have a greater impact, regardless if you are the same gender or not. I have seen many boys completely "railroad" a male teacher, and completely shudder when they see a female one. The quality of their work, school experience and learning? Now that's a different matter!
