How your inner athlete makes you smarter
    thekay
    by thekay  8-7-2008
also from article: Even when we are sitting or lying down, our bodies send our brains regular updates about how our limbs are positioned. When we, say, stand and begin walking, these electric messages need to be sent more often. (Knee is bent, straight, bent, straight ...) Move fast enough and the electrical activity doesn't have time to dissipate between each message. It begins building up in the brain and eventually triggers a release of chemicals called growth factors. Growth factors are like manna for neurons. "They make neurons stronger, healthier and improve their ability to learn," Cotman said. In the presence of growth factors, new neurons are born and old ones sprout, grow and form better connections with each other. Blood vessels blossom along side the neurons, giving them quick access to glucose and other nutrients. All this, in turn, improves our ability to think, learn and remember. As Cotman said, exercise "builds the pipes" for improved cognition.

    Gamers show Aspbergers traits
    pokkets
    by pokkets  4-23-2008    1
They are not suggesting that aspbergers syndrome is caused by gameplay, but the similar symptoms may give researchers new insight into the mechanism of autism. No doubt the brain of a game player is having particular specific sections of the brain reinforced by the game play, leaving other areas to atrophy. The biggest difference may be, that the thoughts of an aspberger's syndrome sufferer can be a complete mystery. If you want to know what a gamer is thinking, you just have to watch them play the game.

    Thinking the way animals do
    pokkets
    by pokkets  12-25-2007    9
Temple Grandin Ph.D. is an assistant professor of animal behaviour at Colorado State Uni. She suffers from a form of autism, and describes the way she thinks as thinking in pictures. This has helped her understand the way Animals think, with direct association, rather than a logical process. A significant statement which can apply to most people, is the fact that originally as far as she was aware everybody thought the same way. Until she asked people and found this was not the case. She describes a radio station person who said she had no pictures, in her mind, but thought in terms of emotions or words. I'm sure I can understand my dogs. They seem to think in a manner that is simple, and straightforward, it can just be a matter of associating cues with behavior, and remembering Pavlov. I think in Pictures and sounds. There is music I can 'hear' in my mind that not only has the same 'quality' as the original, but there is a remarkable capacity to edit. Perhaps something like Auti

Childhood TV viewing can cause teenage attention problems
    thekay
    by thekay  9-4-2007
More from article: It was also possible that TV viewing may supplant other activities that promote concentration, such as reading, games, sports and play, he said. The lack of participation inherent in TV watching might also condition children when it comes to other activities. The study was not proof that TV viewing causes attention problems, Landhuis said, because it may be that children prone to attention problems may be drawn to watching television. "However, our results show that the net effect of television seems to be adverse," he wrote. Previous studies have linked the sedentary habit of TV watching among children to obesity and diabetes, and another study in the same journal cited the poor nutritional content of the overwhelming majority of food products advertised on the top-rated U.S. children's television shows.
