Abstract approach best for teaching and learning math?
    thekay
    by thekay  4-25-2008    1
Best practice in my opinion should include abstract and concrete (real) practice- no one learns everything the same way, so nothing should be taught the one way.

    Dyslexia,a self compensating mental disorder
    vickybaranwal
    by vickybaranwal  1-13-2008    3
The topic took my attention because of the famous Dyslexic people....we are not very much aware of the strengths of dyslexia. There are many examples of Dyslexic people who were lacking in learning abilities but used their imagination to be a symbol of superiority.... These famous dyslexics proof that nurturing the dyslexic capabilities contributes to their own potential and happiness. In fact, they even contribute to a better world by using their abilities: Albert Einstein used his imagination to come up with relativity theory; Thomas Edison used his to invent; Walt Disney to entertain us; Winston Churchill to rally the British against Nazi Germany; Richard Branson and other entrepreneurs to create better products and services whilst creating employment in the process.

New Math Theory Explains Toddler's "Word Spurt"
    Kore7
    by Kore7  8-19-2007    5
A bell-shaped word distribution and a steady child learning rate turn out to be enough to bring about the extraordinary explosion seen in children's vocabularies around this age. McMurray notes that languages have only a small number of very easy-to-learn words and many more intermediate words. So when a baby has been exposed to enough language to learn the easy words, she will acquire just a few words. As she is exposed to more language, she begins to learn the medium words. And because there are a lot of medium words, she is likely to pick up a lot of words at this stage. This, McMurray says, is the vocabulary explosion.

    Male teachers help boys "behave"
    thekay
    by thekay  8-5-2007    3
First thought, "well duh!" Second thought: I think the way the teacher teaches is the bigger factor- if you are able to connect and adapt better to the students' learning style, you will have a greater impact, regardless if you are the same gender or not. I have seen many boys completely "railroad" a male teacher, and completely shudder when they see a female one. The quality of their work, school experience and learning? Now that's a different matter!

    Does early schooling harm children?
    thekay
    by thekay  8-5-2007    1
I think it is the format of the teaching and learning that could harm the kids the most- if they are subjected to very structured lessons and tests before they are ready, I can foresee psychological harm done to them, especially in the areas of confidence and dealing with anxiety and stress. 5 year olds are supposed to be in "Kindegarten"- "Children's garden"- a Kinder classroom should have places for the students to explore and learn; most do best in play. Frankly, almost everyone does best, learning-wise- at play :)

    Researcher Links Storytelling, Math Ability
    haraya
    by haraya  6-24-2007    3
This study suggests that building strong storytelling skills early in the preschool years may be helpful in preparing children for learning mathematics when they enter school. ''It is also a nice finding, I think, because storytelling is something every parent can easily do and foster with their children, without the need to buy any fancy toys or materials,'' said O'Neill. Given these findings, O'Neill is continuing in further studies, also funded by Science and Engineering Research Canada, to explore more precisely what aspects of storytelling are linked to aspects of mathematical ability.
