From Little Things, Big Things Grow
    debbyski
    by debbyski  12-20-2007    9
If the title doesn't fit this clip, then I'll explain the meaning. It's funny how the simplest random act of kindness can be so powerful. It can literally move one to tears. Like someone giving me this clip. I can't take credit where credit is due. Again, random acts of kindness are what make us better human beings. My New Year's resolution is to try to be a better human being. It's an entirely selfish one you know. It not only makes me feel better about myself. It hopefully makes me grow as a person. Thank you. :)

    Why George Orwell wrote 1984
    pokkets
    by pokkets  10-17-2007    15
Orwell served in Burma as a member of The Indian Imperial police, saw poverty and failure, but the Spanish Civil War and the rise of Hitler, and the NAZIs, gave him a political direction, and his work after 1936, was to warn against the establishment of a totalitarian state. There is more at the site, with more background. Orwell died Seven months after 1984 was published, due to the effects of tuberculosis, and an allergic reaction to a new medication. While he was in Hospital, writing 1984 they took away his typewriter, but he continued to write longhand with a ballpoint pen, despite his failing health

Tolstoy & Gandhi: Two Giants Bound By Pacifism
    gingembre
    by gingembre  1-6-2008    10
Enlightening account of the relationship between Tolstoy & Gandhi "In South Africa, Tolstoy's writings landed on the desk of a young Indian dissident, Mahatma Gandhi. He was overwhelmed, declaring that after reading Tolstoy his "lack of faith in non-violence vanished." He hung a picture of Tolstoy on his office wall and named the camp where he trained activists in peaceful resistance Tolstoy Farm. Gandhi wrote five letters to Leo Tolstoy and received four in return, all glowing with praise and intellectual exchange. In his last letter, written in September 1910 only weeks before his death, Tolstoy told Gandhi that his activity was "the most central and important of all the work now being done in the world." Years later, Gandhi repaid the compliment, writing that he knew of no one "in India or anywhere else who has had as profound an understanding of nonviolence as Tolstoy had." Tolstoy had inspired Gandhi's legendary instruction to "be the change you want to see in the worl

From the article: "Columbus and his men also used the Taino as sex slaves: it was a common reward for Columbus’ men for him to present them with local women to rape. As he began exporting Taino as slaves to other parts of the world, the sex-slave trade became an important part of the business, as Columbus wrote to a friend in 1500: “A hundred castellanoes (a Spanish coin) are as easily obtained for a woman as for a farm, and it is very general and there are plenty of dealers who go about looking for girls; those from nine to ten (years old) are now in demand.” It seems Chris was a naughty, naughty boy.

It's a long list of people who regret their decision not to play (probably Dylan aside). I've always felt deeply sad about Joni not being able to play, but never knew how many bands actually turned down the gig thinking it would just be a little hippie fest on a pig farm. My mom was there and somehow I feel like I was too.

Disaster Gives Birth to Greenest Town in America
    urbanlife
    by urbanlife  12-31-2007    7
To leverage environmentalism to rebuild and sustain itself in the wake of near total destruction, it just may unwittingly be writing a modern survival guide for rural America. Currently, the town has completed town houses for working class families that are LEED gold certified. Gold certification means these places will be almost twice as efficient as they used to be. A lot of what's happening in Greensburg is some of the first in the country.

Bush: Biggest Spender Ever !!! Worst EVER !!! Top WASTER
    righthand
    by righthand  10-26-2007    1
Defence Under Bush it's grown on average by 5.7% a year. Under LBJ it rose by 4.9% a year. Both numbers are adjusted for inflation. "Including costs for fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, defence spending under Bush has gone up 86% since 2001" Chris Hellman of the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation. Current annual defense spending — not counting war costs — is 25% above the height of the Reagan-era buildup, he said Homeland Insecurity Spending also has soared, to about $31 billion last year, triple the pre-9/11 number. Bush's super-spending is about far more than defence and homeland security. The 2002 farm bill, 2003 Medicare, 2005 highway bill and education.
