clipmarks POP-A-THON: $1 per POP for UNICEF!
    JimEspo
    by JimEspo  10-30-2006    43
For every POP this clip gets between now and 10 p.m. Eastern on Halloween 2006, I will give $1 to my nephew's school Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF campaign (up to $200). The POP will cost you nothing, it will cost me a $1. What do you have to lose? Let's help make some internet history by being part of (what I believe is) the first social bookmarking/networking community "POP-A-THON"! Imagine if every clipmarker gave $1 to a charity of choice for every one of their POPs?

Who Will Cry For Innocent Iraqis?
    thisnamecantbetaken
    by thisnamecantbetaken  9-6-2007    13
Half of Iraq's population are children. Children! Who can condone dropping bombs on babies and tormenting children, no matter how "noble" they may think the cause? Who can know of Iraq's suffering and still proudly wave the flag, droning off hollow words of security, democracy and freedom? How can anyone, anyone keep supporting this terrible murderous war? How??

Is a 'Dark Force' Pushing the Universe Apart?
    Silkweaver
    by Silkweaver  7-21-2008    6
Astronomers now recognize that the eventual fate of the universe is inextricably tied to the presence of dark energy and dark matter. The current standard model for cosmology describes a universe that is 70 percent dark energy, 25 percent dark matter, and only 5 percent normal matter.

16 Of The World's Best Squares: Think About The Details
    urbanlife
    by urbanlife  4-9-2008    7
From Mexico to Italy to Iran, these remarkable squares can inspire us all. What stands out most is that design is only a small fraction of what goes into making a great square: small details add up to great places. Historically, squares were the center of communities, and they traditionally helped shape the identity of entire cities. Like the tentacles of an octopus extending into the surrounding neighborhood, the influence of a good square (such as Union Square in New York) starts at least a block away. Any great square has a variety of smaller "places" within it to appeal to various people. The use of a square changes during the course of the day, week, and year. The streets and sidewalks around a square greatly affect its accessibility and use, as do the buildings that surround it. Any community where people want to discover the rewards of public life can make a square its centerpiece.

    Kore7
    by Kore7  11-5-2006    20
International legal experts and human rights observers have questioned the impartiality of the trial court, which was created to try top leaders of the ousted government during the 15-month period of formal American occupation following the invasion in the spring of 2003. "We saw this trial, along with the others, as an opportunity to bring justice to those Iraqis who had suffered horribly under Baath Party rule," Richard Dicker, director of the international justice program at Human Rights Watch, said in a statement on Sunday. "Unfortunately, we believe the serious shortcomings in the fairness of the proceedings undermined the legitimacy and credibility of the trial."

Brain Waves Pattern Themselves After Rhythms Of Nature
    Mohir
    by Mohir  2-20-2008    3
Although the bulk of his work involves deriving equations, Cowan's findings mesh well with laboratory data generated on the cerebral cortex and electroencephalograms. His latest findings show that the same mathematical tools physicists use to describe the behavior of subatomic particles and the dynamics of liquids and solids can now be applied to understanding how the brain generates its various rhythms.

    Friendships Keep You Healthy
    Sorgalim
    by Sorgalim  3-17-2007    4
High school and college friends, friends from work, friends from raising children together, from neighborhood committees, from shared vacations -- sure, some of these bonds and friendships fall away as part of the natural cycle of growing and changing, but most women find new friendships to replace them. Women who don't find close friendships, who have trouble keeping up connections, need to make an effort to change those patterns. Hundreds of research studies confirm that isolation hurts us and connection heals us through the same physical mechanisms as exercise and healthy diet. Blood vessels are measurably more elastic, the heart's ability to respond to extraordinary demands is higher, cardiac inflammatory protein levels are lower, and blood pressure response to exercise is better in more connected people. Their stress-hormone blood profiles are also measurably healthier than those of isolated people.

When Unusually Rapid Improvement Becomes Usual
    Silkweaver

Given the existing pressure on such social programs as Social Security and Medicare, I believe one implication of this “unusually rapid improvement” is that these systems will need to be radically overhauled in order to survive this new demographic reality.
