The Great Pacific Garbage Patch: Also Know As The Trash Vortex
    urbanlife
    by urbanlife  4-8-2008    6
Sad Picture: No one to blame for this but ourselves. Four fifths of the plastic detritus floating over 2.5 million square miles of ocean surface arrives there from land-based run off: from stormwater, in other words: litter. Sadly - many people take the "out of sight, out of mind" approach. Plastic contamination in the world's oceans is worse than previously imagined and no amount of technology can clean it up. We are damned to a future of pollution by plastic. All succeeding generations will only see an ocean filled with trash. Net a piece of plastic, and you’ll find barnacles and small crabs clinging to it. Not a good thing for fish, birds, and mammals that mistake it for its natural food, such as eggs, jellyfish, or other sea creatures. Most of the plastic will eventually photo-degrade into small, dust-like particles to the point that it will be non-detectable to the human eye, but ingestible by sea mammals, birds, and fish—many of which we then consume ourselves.

Do Dolphins Have a Sense of the Future?
    Silkweaver
    by Silkweaver  6-10-2008    8
It is their ability to understand sentences of sign language that astound though, with a sentence like “touch the frisbee with your tail and then jump over it” returning just that from the dolphin. This proves more than just rigorous training is the answer, but an understanding of what we are asking of them.

    AtlLiberal
    by AtlLiberal  12-4-2007    5
It's time for us to grow up as a culture and trash the inhibition of questioning religion. Why should this area of thought get a free pass? The only answer I can come up with is that it would not survive public doubt and criticism. As we've seen in the Bush administration, religious dogma does have consequences that can negatively affect millions of people. To allow these areas to go unquestioned is ridiculous.

LARGE HADRON COLLIDER. Will it destroy the universe?
    vk2yoc
    by vk2yoc  2-13-2008    9
The idea dates back to Einstein's explanation that spacetime can be deformed by large energies or masses. Since the Large Hadron Collider is a twenty-six kilometer ring of superconducting magnets designed to do nothing but give a particle as large an energy as possible, that sounds like it could be an issue. Small deformations in spacetime (like Earth) give us the force of gravity, severe deformations give the cosmological trash compacting black holes, and an extreme case could cause a wormhole - a link between two points as spacetime folds over to touch itself (no sniggering).

"America is imperfect. It has no divine right to be the world's leading nation. And yet - in this glorious political year - something about it sings. And as the American Olympic team reminded us when we looked at it and wondered at its multicolour, multi-ethnic vibrancy (more than 30 members were born abroad) this nation is ours. There is nothing wrong in wishing it well."

Creative ways to recycle ordinary objects
    Aribeth
    by Aribeth  3-13-2008    2
Recycling doesn’t have to be limited to helping the environment: it can also be a challenge and opportunity to ingenious designers who work with materials most people would consider waste to create amazing things. Some of the above designs serve multiple purposes: illustrating the material possibilities of what most would consider trash while also maximizing the aesthetic potential of what would otherwise be considered waste objects. Clothes become rugs, airline trolleys become furniture, cardboard becomes bridges and sewage turns into building blocks!

Three White People Who Won't Be Voting For Barak Obama
    ouyangwulong
    by ouyangwulong  8-27-2008    44
People still keep talking about how racism among "working class whites" (that's media code for "po' white trash") will not vote for Obama because he is black. I'm getting seriously tired of this. Working class people in America aren't any more racist than the class of Americans who are too wealthy to work. Sure, there are some people who are racist and won't vote for him, and that shocks people so it gets a lot of attention. But seriously, look at these three guys: do you think they vote AT ALL? (remember, something like 60% of America doesn't!) Nobody is talking about all the working class whites who had trouble voting for John Kerry or Al Gore. If Obama loses, it will be because of the pathetic Democratic Party itself, not because he is black.

Made entirely from trash, Semakau Island, Singapore

    by hitchhiker08  6-3-2008    2
Started as a garbage disposal dump - today it is an island, where birds nest and people play, oblivious of the fact that the entire island is made of rubbish! 66 bird species have been recorded here. Along with various marine life (corrals, sponges, starfish, etc), all the animals have been fooled into thinking its a natural island! Singapore has been incinerating its waste here since 1999.
