POPSWildlife in the DMZ: Vanishing rainforest of the Congo basin 1, The demilitarised zone (DMZ) separating South and North Korea is home to over 1,000 plant species and rare animals. The DMZ Forum is a lobby group promoting the idea of turning the area into a nature reserve. 2. The forest is the world's biggest after the Amazon. Now Britain and Norway have created a £108m fund to help protect it from logging and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The Congo basin forest is home to around 50 million people in six countries including Cameroon, Central Africa Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and Congo-Brazzaville. The Congo basin forest is twice the size of France and exceeded in size only by the Amazon. It is estimated that logging - much of it illegal - destroys an area the size of 25,000 football pitches every week. The UN estimates that at present rates two-thirds of the forest will have vanished by the year 2040.

POPSThe Right Was Right Now that the elections are over we can all focus on what really matters: calling each other names. This time around we have someone on the Right pretending to be someone on the Left and thence presenting the Democrat's "new manifesto" to Congress. I figured this would be pretty stupid... and it is. But it's so patently absurd that it actual moves into the realm of humour. Afterthought: It's either that or someone really on the Left making fun of people on the Right for their paranoia about what will happen when the "godless, heathen, french-hippie communists" take over. I didn't bother to do enough research. Either way, enjoy. Or don't.

POPSEclipse - Libyan desert Sky in homage to 2day August 28 Eclipse .. ;-) " Waw an Numus Eclipse City is selected as a best place to observe this total solar eclipse. For the eclipse, Colonel Kadafi invited to the Eclipse City about 5000 people who were VIP guests and one of them was the ex-President Clinton. From Japan, 57 eclipse fun visited the same place. As many VIP guest were visited there, our schedule was made large change by Libyan government. Instead of 3 hours drive following the first schedule, we were obliged to run about 1.5 days in the Sahara desert using 6WD buses and arrived at Waw an Numus Eclipse City at last."

POPSWhy do Palestinians get more attention than Tibetans? Prager: "The first reason is terror. The Palestinian leadership decided, with the support of the Palestinian people, that murdering as many innocent people was the fastest way to garner world attention. They were right. On the other hand, as The Economist notes in its March 28, 2008 issue, "Tibetan nationalists have hardly ever resorted to terrorist tactics…" It is interesting to speculate how the world would have reacted had Tibetans hijacked international flights, slaughtered Chinese citizens in Chinese restaurants and temples, on Chinese buses and trains, and massacred Chinese schoolchildren." The second reason is oil and support from Arabs. The Palestinians have the unqualified support of all Middle Eastern oil-producing nations and the support of the Muslim world. The Tibetans are poor and have the support of no nations, let alone oil-producing ones.

POPSMy Best Ever. Men-only Sex next? Ha ha
"Haredi spiritual leadership, concerned that the Transportation Ministry's coed classrooms for teaching mandatory drivers' lessons might lead to lascivious behaviour and sexual fantasizing, opened their own alternative, men-only classrooms." "The Council for the Purity of the Camp, an organization representing a wide range of Hassidic courts and haredi Lithuanian Jewry, which receives spiritual guidance from Rabbi Elyashiv and leader of the Ger Hassidic sect, Rabbi Alter, arranged for the men-only course to be opened in cooperation with the Transportation Ministry. " "The Council for the Purity of the Camp is responsible for several projects involving the strict separation of men and women in public places. Most of the council's activities are directed at sex-related issues, which are seen by the haredi community as modern secular society's biggest threat to tradition. For instance, the council has led the battle to segregate public buses so that men sit up front and women sit

POPSGood news for the lazy amongst us >Using some altogether trickier maths, the plucky number-smiths showed that, even if you start making the bus routes more complicated and adding more and more bus stops, the conclusions stay the same. Whether this theory works in London, where bendy buses are frequently held up by long traffic queues and even longer road works, is another matter. However, if you do decide to walk, do so immediately and briskly and don’t look back!<

POPSRefuse to be Terrorized Good article that itemizes some of the false alarms after terroirsts plans were foiled. More from the second page follows: "Our politicians help the terrorists every time they use fear as a campaign tactic. The press helps every time it writes scare stories about the plot and the threat. And if we're terrified, and we share that fear, we help. All of these actions intensify and repeat the terrorists' actions, and increase the effects of their terror. The surest defense against terrorism is to refuse to be terrorized. Our job is to recognize that terrorism is just one of the risks we face, and not a particularly common one at that. And our job is to fight those politicians who use fear as an excuse to take away our liberties and promote security theater that wastes money and doesn't make us any safer."

POPSA Different Class Of Wrong "I'm wondering, though, if the absence of a street fair atmosphere in New Orleans had something to do with a death toll in the hundreds, with bodies floating in streets that had turned to rivers after a wall of water destroyed nearly the entire city and separated thousands of families."

POPSIraqi Govt. Exaggerates Number of Returning Iraqis
More: As a result, the tally included Iraqi employees of The New York Times who had visited relatives in Syria but were not among the roughly two million Iraqis who have fled the country. The figures apparently also included three people suspected of being insurgents arrested Saturday near Baquba in Diyala Province. The police described them as local residents who had fled temporarily to Syria, then returned. A half-dozen owners of Iraqi travel agencies and drivers who regularly travel to Syria agreed that the numbers misrepresented reality. They said that the flow of returnees peaked last month, with more than 50 families arriving daily from Syria at Baghdad’s main drop-off point. Since Nov. 1, they said, the numbers have declined, and on Sunday morning, during a period when several buses used to appear, only one came. The travel agents said that they believed that Iraqis would continue to return to Baghdad from Syria and Jordan but that the initial rush appeared to be o

POPSManners 'will make Britain great' "The greatest pleasure you can give yourself is to help somebody else" is so true. But I doubt that manners will change morality. South African's are a fairly well-mannered nation but that doesn't stop us from having the highest murder and rape statistics in the world. Our criminals say, "Please, let me slit your throat", and "thank you" afterwards.

POPS 6,000 Sunnis Join Pact With US In Iraq Kurds often consider Kurkik part of their ancestral homeland and often refer to the city as the "Kurdish Jerusalem." Saddam, however, relocated tens of thousands of pro-regime Arabs to the city in the and 1990s under his "Arabization" policy. The Iraqi government has begun resettling some of those Arabs to their home regions, making room for thousands of Kurds who have gradually returned to Kirkuk since Saddam's ouster. Tension has been rising over the city's status—whether it will join the semi-autonomous Kurdish region or continue being governed by Baghdad. "Hawija is the gateway through which all our communities—Kurdish, Turkomen and Arab alike—can become unsafe," said Abu Saif al- Jabouri, mayor of al-Multaqa village north of Kirkuk. "Do I love my neighbor in Hawija? That question no longer matters. I must work to help him, because his safety helps me."
