Elves in Chinese folklore
zephyrgong
by zephyrgong  7-12-2006    9
They're top 10 widely spreadly elves in Chinese folklore, sorry it's too hard to translate their names to English, but the Chinese names are bellow: 狐仙(Fox spirits),龙女,夜叉(Yaksha),判官,牛头(Ox heads),马面(horse faces ),二郎(Erlang Shen ),七郎,刑天(Xing Tian),辟邪 I hope I can have time and ability to do some short description to each of them. There's already have a detailed list about Chinese mythology on Wikipedia(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_mythology), most of them have well described, but I think have some pictures will make more sense. ;)

Life of people around Wudang Mountain and something about Chinese Taoist Culture
zephyrgong
by zephyrgong  2-27-2006    14
Someone may remember the movie"Crouching Tiger,Hiding Dragon",which directed by Ann Lee.In that movie, hero performed by Yun-Fat Chow is the Master of Wudang,so we can see many Wudang Kungfu and wonderful Wudang landscapes in the movie. Wudang always play an important part throughout Chinese history, either in Taoist,or in Kungfu. It's one of cradlelands of Taoist, and its Kungfu, one important school of Chinese Martial Arts,as famous as Shaolin Temple for our Chinese, has a very long history. The Kungfu, such as Taiji Boxing(Tai Chi),incorporating the ways to Taoist culture(keep healthy and prolong the lifespan)and collecting the skills to fight. Chinese Taoist Culture and Taoist Temples on Wudang are unique. But now ,local government dont think much of these.By contrast, even some of these temples have a longer history than Forbidden City in Beijing,it has been damaged a lot because of non-protect,people around the mountain are poor.Furthermore, some Chinese traditional culture are losin

Even in China, these are poor places. But anyway, these are existent. The gap between rich and poverty become wider and wider ,and wider than many other countries(maybe I can say,any other countries),either developed or developing countries. By the way,the sentence written on the wall in the last photo means"decrease burden of farmers "

A week-long Labor Day holiday in China
zephyrgong
by zephyrgong  5-2-2006    3
These're two photos which have been taken at a beach of Shenzhen,China. In China, there're 3 week-long holidays, which are Spring Festival Holiday,Labor Day Holiday and National Day Holiday.Actually, execpt Spring Festival, the others are just 3 days length each, but we put 2 weekends together so that there's a 7 days length holiday. As you know,China has about 1.4 billions people, many of them have no money for travelling abroad. So problem comes,1.4 billions people, spend their week-long holidays at a same time.Tourism sites are full of people.Just like what my friend said,we cant see any landscapes, what we can see are just menscapes. I still cant understand this policy. Some economists said this may promote consumption and enlarge domesitic demand.but the whole country has holidays at a same time,I think this will also increase accidents and make shortage of resources, why dont we arrange a staggered time for each department?or for each kind of job?

And I suggest in the next version of Windows, Vista, Microsoft should put an auto startup proxy service like Tor in, because I’m afraid one day when they block everything, we Chinese have to surfing through proxy.

Advertisements written on the ground in Chinese Cities
zephyrgong
by zephyrgong  3-30-2006
"Ground Written Advertisements" now becomes a big problems for our modern cities, especially for some coastal cities such like Shenzhen. Contents of these ads are things like "selling certificates","hypothecation","private detective","dun sb. for payment for you(in violent way)",etc. And these texts can be seen almost everywhere in the city, sidewalk, bus stop, crossover, zebra crossing, etc. These Ads are hard to clean.Once you spent much time to clean them,it'll be easy to write again during midnight.Even you arrest those guys who wrote these, what could you do to them? They're just "employees",even you send them to prison, there'll be new one to continue this work soon.

life of the chinese coal miner today, coal makes electricity and that bring us light, but in miners' life, just darkness. They do a most rough work, and have a most simple life. They have a wish that just have a safty life--there hundreds of miners died every day because of all kinds of accident. Officer said,"XXX" is a terrible accident,XXX miners died,we didnt take the responsibility of supervisal, and we'll punish the owner of mine... But accidents still happened everyday, and miners do the same things under the same situation as past, day after day, year after year... Nothing changed, and seems that never changed.  Most Beijingers woke up on Monday to find,to their surprise, that a "yellow blanket"has covered up everything in the open air:from window sills, cars and the ground to every single leaf on the trees. A sandstorm hitting the China-Mongolia border Saturday and Sunday started to affect Beijing at midnight on Sunday.China's far west and north has been hit by sandstorm in decades,I'm really afraid that there'll be a sandstorm during 2008,Olympic in Beijing.

These photos is not taken by me but a chinese friend. You can find some more photos through the original link. As he said, there're one kind of people, living in their own world,be happy with their belief.Sometimes we couldn't understand their happyness--how they enjoy themselves in such circumstances?as they couldn't understand our sadness.Besides prosperity of cities, what we left?We come to city, with our dreams, with our ambition, but now we may lose ourselves in city life... I'd like a trip there in the future.

Is English that important
zephyrgong
by zephyrgong  3-10-2006    5
China is probably one of the few countries in the world where learning English has almost become a national obsession. However, most people cost much but gain little. Our teaching and test systems have deviated from the initial purpose of English learning in that it teaches and encourages elite English instead of practical one. Beneficiaries are limited to those who intend to study overseas. Yet, to the millions who have little use of the language, it is a great waste of time, energy and resources. What's more outrageous is that the importance of English skills has been exaggerated to the extent that it overweighs almost everything in assessing a person's competency. Learning a language is, in a sense, a study of the culture on which the language is based. In that light, we should put more emphasis on learning Chinese than on English. We're losing somthing traditional and basal.
