POPSThe amazing catacombs full of mummified monks This was a way to preserve status and dignity even in death, by being clothed in the latest fashions and the most expensive cloth (although monks wore their everyday clothing and any ropes they had worn as penance). It has been rumoured that the body of Spanish painter Velasquez is at Capuchin, but the exact position is unknown. As well as providing clothing for their deceased, and generally keeping them looking presentable, grieving relatives gave financial donations to the monastery, which helped maintain the catacombs and guarantee their loved one a permanent spot at the site. If the relatives ceased to pay these contributions, then the body would be removed from its resting place and left on a shelf until more money arrived.

POPSComputer memory gives booting up the boot If you turn the computer off, the programs, files and applications stop at the same time, as they are. They don't have to be loaded every time the computer starts. Looks like all of the electronics textbooks will have to be rewritten. This new circuit element seems almost the electronic equivalent to finding another color. It's properties will mean it will probably play a big part in the design of circuits that will give the tech revolution another twist.

POPSThe Crisis is Coming: How Peak Water Could Reshape Civilization With advanced technologies and more prudent water usage, the majority of Earth’s inhabitants will be able to continue to enjoy the luxury of clean water for a long time to come. Yes, we need to fundamentally rethink water usage and plenty of bigger changes are needed, but at least we’re heading in the right direction. With better stewardship and improved city planning, humans will likely be able to avert a good portion of the more disastrous scenarios.

POPSThe History of Color In Photography Important Dates in Photography: 1850: Levi Hill claims to invent color photography, though his claims were highly contested 1861: Scottish physicist James Clerk-Maxwell demonstrates a color photography system involving three black and white photographs, each taken through a red, green, or blue filter. The photos were turned into lantern slides and projected in registration with the same color filters. This is the “color separation” method. 1868: Ducas de Hauron publishes a book proposing a variety of methods for color photography. 1877: Louis Ducos du Hauron experiments with subtractive color 1906: Availability of panchromatic black and white film and therefore high quality color separation color photography. J.P. Morgan finances Edward Curtis to document the traditional culture of the North American Indian. 1907: First commercial color film, the Autochrome plates, manufactured by Lumiere brothers in France
